The volume in your hands is greatly expanded from the first edition, published in 1989. The expansion was undertaken on request by many who have used the book in their courses, and the reason was something of a surprise to me. It seems that this text is occasionally used, not just for a companion volume for the telecourse Ethics in America, but also on its own, as the text for an introductory level history of ethics course. But for that purpose, the selections were incomplete.

In the first edition I included only those works which were appealed to, explicitly or implicitly, by the panelists on the various discussions, and that means only works in the Western tradition. Further, only those works were included that had suggestions to make about how to solve ethical problems, to help students follow the actual reasoning of the panelists. Where the panelists' reasoning appealed (usually silently) to an ethical tradition, that tradition was included in the selections and the selections referenced in the Study Guide, the other companion volume. Only works so referenced were included in the Source Reader.

Now, that is one very exclusive principle of selection. Omitted were all religious traditions but our own, all Eastern thought of any kind, the entire nineteenth- and twentieth-century literature of doubt and ethical restructuring, and the contemporary movements of feminism, environmentalism, and other forms of multiculturalism (all movements that change the center of ethical consideration). If the text is to be used for a complete course in ethics, surely some selections must at least entertain the possibility of taking these literatures into account.

Accordingly, the second edition has expanded, to include selections from Islamic, Buddhist, and Confucian thought (attempts to put the Bhagavad Gita in some form that preserved the poetry were unsuccessful, so Hinduism is not included); also existentialism, feminism, and environmentalism. (A new selection on Fiduciary Duty, taken from the law, has also been added as a complement to the selection from Royce.) All the disclaimers that applied to the first edition still apply: you will get only a taste of these rich and fascinating authors, literature, and movements, the editor makes no claims to expertise on any of these authors in particular and certainly no claims to expertise on them all; you will be frustrated by the minimal selections provided; the only way you can relieve that frustration is by going in each case back to the original source. Wonderful book worth keeping and reading! Actually learned something :)

Got this book for ethics 101 and it actually is amazingly insightful. I sold back my other books but kept this. It allows you to understand the foundation of the United States and our law as government also better think rationally about rights and Liberty. Great historians, would be lawyers or ethics and debate lovers. Even the religious study part was fascinating. Loved the commentary for Christianity and Muslim as it helps understand complex government and political conflicts today stemming from religious rights.

Excellent book containing original writings on ethics.

This is an excellent book which contains original writings by important authors, both ancient and modern, on the topic of ethics. This is a companion volume to the videos and the book "Ethics in America: Study Guide." Naturally, anyone with access to a good library could find all these essays and excerpts there. Perhaps, one could find them all online nowadays. However, I found it convenient to have them at-hand in this book.

Grade 7 Up—"One minute the teacher was talking about the Civil War. And the next minute he was gone." Just vanished—along with everyone else over the age of 13 in a 20-mile radius around Perdido Beach, CA. The children left behind find themselves battling hunger, fear, and one another in a novel strongly reminiscent of William Golding's Lord of the Flies. Things go from bad to worse when some of the children begin exhibiting strange powers, animals show signs of freakish mutations, and people disappear as soon as they turn 14. Though an excellent premise for a novel, Gone suffers from a couple of problems. First, it is just too long. After opening with a bang, the initial 200 or so pages limp along before the action begins to really pick up. Secondly, based on the themes of violence, death, and implied sexual intimidation, this is clearly written for an older teen audience who may not appreciate the fact that no one in the book is older than 13. In spite of its faults, Gone is a gripping and gritty read with enough creepy gruesomeness to satisfy readers who have a taste for the macabre. Even stranger than the disappearance of much of humanity, though, are the bizarre, sometimes terrifying powers that some of the kids are developing, not to mention the rapidly mutating animals or the impenetrable wall 20 miles in diameter that encircles them. This intense, marvelously plotted, paced, and characterized story will immediately garner comparisons to Lord of the Flies, or even the long-playing world shifts of Stephen King, with just a dash of X-Men for good measure. A potent mix of action and thoughtfulness—centered around good and evil, courage and cowardice—renders this a tour-de-force that will leave readers dazed, disturbed, and utterly breathless. to the whacked out powers the kids developed--I never knew what to expect and was constantly delighted with some fresh horror

This is one of the most imaginative dystopian-type books I've come across in a long time! In a small town called Perdido Beach, whose only real claim to fame is the nuclear power plant it is home to, everyone is going about their day when suddenly all the adults vanish. At first, you wonder if they were raptured or something. But then things start to get a bit strange--some of the kids develop powers, dangerous rivalries emerge, and there is a hint of some Darker Power at force here.

It reminded me a bit of Alexandra Bracken's Darkest Minds books, except without the oppressive grownups.

Grant was constantly surprising me with the creative twists he threw into the book. From talking coyotes to flying snakes, to the whacked out powers the kids developed--I never knew what to expect and was constantly delighted with some fresh horror.

That being said, I feel like I should have enjoyed reading this book more than I did. Not that I didn't enjoy it at all--I did--but it just wasn't the kind of all consuming page turner that it seems like it should have been. I kept reading a few pages at night before bed and then falling asleep. That shouldn't happen with this type of book--normally with a fast paced dystopian, I can't put it down til I reach the end.

I think the problem here is in the character development. None of these characters really felt very fully formed. They each have approximately one key trait: Sam is a leader; Astrid is a genius; Drake is an evil sadist; Little Pete is autistic; Quinn is insecure; Alberto is an entrepreneur, etc. etc. etc. The interpersonal drama just felt kind of forced and half baked. And for me, it doesn't matter how creative a world is or how tense the plot--if I can't really relate to the characters, I'm never going to be fully sucked in.

Still gotta give this points for creativity - it's really not like any other book I've come across lately. 3.5 stars.

Maybe the best series ever

This series was technically YA. Being 68 doesn't stop me from reading the good YA stuff despite it's penchant for romance. I thought that Gone was an excellent book. As the next book was released, I expected the "mid-series" weakness. Instead, I found that I liked the book even better. And so on through book 5, Fear which is even more adult and more breath-taking than it's predecessors.

In principle, I hate that authors can't seem to tell a story in 250 pages anymore and that everything is a trilogy or more. Fear has made me change my mind, now I'm living in Fear that the next book will be the final one and I wqon't be able to find anything as good to read.

I'm listing what I consider a few of my favorite books to give you a frame of reference for what I love. The tension, the pacing, the mind boggling imagination. If you liked these, you'll love this series. Let me add that the Gone series should be read in its correct order.

Dante’s 9 circles… pish-posh! Lord of the Flies... please! Oh my goodness! This book series is amazing in so many ways that you will not fully grasp until you are most of the way through it. What far a reaching and comprehensive look at the human spirit, at civilizations, at capitalism (love you Albert!), at survival, at war and its effects on our young adults, at true grit and character! I read this series along with one of my teens, and he was always slightly ahead of me (by about a book). And no matter how horrified I was he would assure me, “It’s going to get worse.” But how could it?!? And yet every time he was right!!! My depression and hopelessness set in on the third book and I had some trouble pushing through that one (that’s how he got ahead of me). But the 4th book picks up like a freight train and by the end (6th book) I was wishing there were a few more books in the series! What an honest look at the darker side of human nature too. This series does not pretty-up evil like they do in so many books now-a-days. These characters will be with me a long, long time. These books are not essentially “horror” stories… even though you will be truly horrified when you read them. They are too true to life for that. Just amazing. Brutal, honest, gritty, engrossing. And the science eventually plays out, if a little light handed… but sufficient for the story line.

For years golfers have either heard this statement or uttered it themselves, and I doubt anyone has ever disagreed. But what do you do about it? How do you address the mental side of the game? If it's so important, why aren't there any teachers out there? Well, your search is over. With Winning in Mind, written by Lanny Bassham, can provide you with a roadmap to follow that will allow you to play up to your physical potential. Think about that. How many times have you said, If I could just have some consistency or I played the best I've ever played on the front nine, then I just fell apart on the back. Lanny Bassham won an Olympic Gold Medal in rifle shooting using the Mental Management System that he created and that is talked about in this book. Hitting a golf ball and shooting a rifle are virtually identical mentally, they both require an action, not a reaction. This allows the mind plenty of time to get involved in the process. Mental Management is founded on several principles. I will touch on a few here, but you really need to read the book and tie them all together. One that really jumped out at me was this statement: Self Image and competitive performance are always equal. As Lanny writes, your Self Image is what makes you act like you. Have you ever shot a career low on the front nine, only to follow with a terrible back nine? That little voice in the back of your head on the 10th tee was your Self Image, pulling you back to your comfort zone by saying Hey, you're not this good. With Winning in Mind can help. Here's one example I have started to use in my teaching. Imagine that you are teaching your 3 year old son or daughter to tie their shoes. When they fail the first few times, as they inevitably do, how do you handle it? Do you berate them into submission and tell them how stupid they are? Or do you support them with encouragement, stressing the challenge of learning a new skill and that they will quickly improve? Obviously, you support them. Now, what happens when you hit a bad golf shot? Do you beat yourself up, saying how can I be that bad, what was I thinking, I'm the worst player in history? Or do you calmly reassure yourself that the next shot will be better, it's a tough game, let's be patient? Your Self Image listens very carefully to your self talk and responds accordingly. This book is great.

This is another one of those books that I just happened to stumble upon and I’m glad I did. I picked it up as I was feasting on mental strength training books. It’s *really* (!) good. (Stunningly good, in fact.)

Lanny Bassham is a world-class athlete turned mental training coach. He shares his wisdom from the perspective of a guy who has been there and done that in the competitive arena— winning an Olympic gold medal and a ton of other championships. (He’s the third in medal count for the USA for all shooters.)

Lanny’s also a great story-teller and a precise teacher. He’s been at this for over four decades and it shows. He created what he calls the Mental Management® System and has trained everyone from PGA golfers and Olympic champions (and teams) to the FBI, Navy SEALs and Miss America contestants.

the real guide to positive thinking

There are a lot of books out there on positive thinking - books like "the secret" come to mind. Wish for a bike and you will get it! Wish for $1 million and you will get it! Why? Many books will outline some vague, metaphysical/new age reason - surely if you sit on your bed and squeeze eyes shut, cross your fingers, and mutter your wish over and over, god/some spiritual force/genie in the bottle will grant it for you...

This is not that kind of book. In a nutshell, the book basically lays out a mental system for positive reinforcement, planning and action. It is about dreaming, yes. But it is also about planning and taking immediate action. It IS about repetition, envisioning success, and "rehearsing" in your head - but in a way that is rooted in reality and practicality.

The book talks a lot about performance as well. The author is an olympic gold medalist in rifling, so a lot of this is applicable in high pressure scenarios. I actually came across this book was because I heard mental management being mentioned by a former navy seal/sniper in a documentary. But it's a very balanced kind of "performance" - it's not an iron-fist kind of discipline. It's a method that relies on positivity and focusing on strengths.

Yes - we all know positive thinking helps - we're not stupid. But I have never come across a book that laid it out in a comprehensive, no none-sense manner. It's clear, it makes sense, and it's not fluff. It's the same old principle...but with a new light shone on it and using simple methods that makes sense. The writing style is conversational, but with substance - I feel like I had a conversation with a wise grandparent (there's a lot of humor in the book too).

If you're starting out personal growth, getting your life into shape and you feel you're ready for the next level, I highly recommend this book. It's a very quick read. I've read a lot of self-help books, and honestly there are only 3 or 4 out there that I can really say changed my life. This is one of them.

(I would recommend Self-Theories by Dweck and Feel the Fear and do it anyway as good starting books before this one, if you're currently in a bad spot - good luck!).

A Tremendous Resource!

I am exaggerating slightly when I say this book has changed my life. Slightly.
There are so many insightful concepts contained within that I am now on my third reading. I have played various sports throughout my life, and I can tell you that the INSTANT I started reading about Bassham's "circles", I could relate and now understand—almost to the event itself—why I lost (or won). Oh how I wish I had run into this book earlier in my life.
A quick, well-written read that is belies its importance, not just to sports, but also to living life. 5 stars, more if I could give them.

The evils of Iago

"Othello" is sort of a companion piece to "Macbeth" -- both are about noble, upstanding men who are destroyed by their own weaknesses. But where Macbeth was ruined by ambition, Othello's destruction comes from his jealousy and gullibility. And the play is really ruled by the nastiest, cruelest, most devious villain Shakespeare ever wrote.

That villain is Iago, a high-ranking soldier who has a grudge against the noble Moorish soldier Othello, who has just eloped with the beautiful Desdemona. Using a nobleman as his pawn, Iago first turns Desdemona's father against Othello, but the new soldier defends himself agains claims of witchcraft.

But Iago's true plan is far more devious, as he disgraces Othello's lieutenant Cassion and plants Desdemona's handkerchief in Cassio's room. Othello finds himself confronted by a chess game of lies, deceit and suspected infidelity, and his jealousy reaches a fever pitch that can only end in death.

Yeah, the real star of this play is undoubtedly Iago. This is the most repellent mixture of absolute malicious evil and crazy-smart intellect that anyone could write -- he is the person you love to hate, even as you admire how devilishly perfect he is at playing the chessmaster who whispers poison into your ear while playing your "friend." He doesn't quite think of EVERYTHING, but he comes close enough that you would NEVER want to deal with someone like this.

But this tragedy is also underscored by the depiction of Othello, a truly noble and loyal soldier who is turned into a deranged homicidal mess. It's somehow even more disturbing to see him deteriorate than it was to see Macbeth, because this guy was on top of the world in every way -- he was smart, eloquent, a brilliant soldier and a newlywed. And look what happens to him.

And Shakespeare deftly builds up this tragedy with a subtle, interconnecting web of lies and misdirections, with the tension building slowly until something has to blow. His writing is typically powerful, generating some quotable phrases ("It is the green-ey'd monster") and lots of cynical, dark dialogue ("Who would not make her husband a cuckold to make him a monarch?").

"Othello" is a strangely fascinating tragedy, with Shakespeare absorbing us again in the tale of a good man corrupted. Definitely a good, if harrowing play.

I found this book as engaging as it is delightful and informative. One might expect a book on the life of tugs to offer only quick diversion, but Tugboats Illustrated provides a deep dive into a fascinating and surprisingly rich subject. Having spent time near the oceans, harbors and river ports throughout my life, unanswered musings about working boats & ships that have floated around my head since childhood, and this book gives them satisfyingly coherent form and context. While many of the specific boats featured are in the northeastern US, the scope of the book is more global, helping to explain the visual characteristics of tugs, and why they look the way they do. The many tasks that tugs perform are beautifully described, and both the universal similarities and the local peculiarities that shape the design and development of tug design and operation are brought vividly to life.
The photos and illustrations are effective at introducing and describing individual topics within the chapters, and the text provides lucid and occasionally poetic reinforcement for the graphics. But the illustrations are the real stars. The drawings are consistently clear and communicative of the point being explored, whether in a simple drawing of a "boot-heel pilot-house", or in sophisticated cut-away views of propulsion systems. The drawings are not showy or elegant, but (like tugs themselves) they are pragmatic and charming, and express the author's great skill in explaining great complexity with graphic aplomb.
If you ever suspected that tugboats were cool, this book will confirm your suspicions, and let you know why!

Hard to Catagorize

This book was not what I expected, when I placed my order. I thought it would be similar to other transportation related books by this publisher and consist of a large number of well-composed high quality photos of tugs and their operations with substantive supporting text. Instead, the preponderance of the illustrations are made up of the author's sketches of tugboats, selected associated components and systems, and key functions. The photographs, most of which are in color, depict very few tugs in their entirety thereby not providing a very good overview of how tugboats evolved and how those used by different companies differed. The book presents itself as a high-level overview with a somewhat whimsical slant.

My real question is who is the intended audience for the book. It almost appears that it is meant to be a book for juveniles instead of a serious work for people with an interest in maritime subjects. For example, one page consists of a reproduction of a NEW YORKER magazine cover depicting whales docking a cruise ship, while another has sketches comparing a tug looking like a house with a house looking like a tug. It does not compare well, in my opinion, with previous books on the subject published in the UK.

Having said this, the author has created some good explanatory sketches, which along with the text are generally accurate. I believe it would appeal to younger readers or an adult with a passing interest in maritime matters.

I purchased this book for my father-in-law as a Boat-Warming (is that a thing?), and he loves it! The images are awesome, and it's chock-full of information about tugboats. Definitely a niche audience, but if you're into tugboats, go for it!

About the Author
Leo Lionni, an internationally known designer, illustrator, and graphic artist, was born in Holland and lived in Italy until he came to the United States in 1939. He was the recipient of the 1984 American Institute of Graphic Arts Gold Medal and was honored posthumously in 2007 with the Society of Illustrators’ Lifetime Achievement Award. His picture books are distinguished by their enduring moral themes, graphic simplicity and brilliant use of collage, and include four Caldecott Honor Books: Inch by Inch, Frederick, Swimmy, and Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse. Hailed as “a master of the simple fable” by the Chicago Tribune, he died in 1999 at the age of 89.

Meets expectations

Indeed, this is the book that they say it is. It arrived in tact. It is paperback, as advertised. This was a family favorite and we were disappointed to learn the our original copy (an old hardback) had been sold or lost, so this was a good replacement. Yes, the book is a good enough children's classic to warrant purchasing a replacement copy of it, so if you have young kids, this is a good one to get.
