Great Information - Almost as Good as Being There

I have not finished this book yet, but so far I'm finding the information extremely compelling and helpful. Helpful because I have already learned a couple of useful techniques for getting my own conscious mind out of the way of my unconscious learning. I read a lot and a couple of years ago I realized most of what I read was going to be wasted unless I was able to "file it" it into my unconscious mind with the conscious intent of some day being able to retrieve it. So now, I try to 'tag' important concepts and ideas I learn to make accessing it later easier. I'm not talking about using conscious devices like those advocated by Harry Lorayne, et al., but subconscious tags. Is it working? I can't say for certain, but trying to develop a means of unconscious recall is better than just reading and forgetting. I think this book is helping me learn to access my unconscious easier. I demand a lot from any book I buy and this one delivered.

The BEST training manual for Ericksonian Hypnotherapy!

This was BY FAR the best book I have ever found on Ericksonian (permissive) technique. I was doubtful about the other reviewers who said you can experience and learn in trance with this book, but IT IS TRUE! The trances are automatic, requiring no effort whatsoever on your part, and they do remarkably help you absorb and assimilate the material much more rapidly. I'm an enthusiastic believer!
Overdurf and Silverthorn simplify what some regard as the most mysterious and "difficult" hypnotic styles to master and use (Ericksonian), but after this book you will find an amazing sense of confidence in your ability to immediately utilize naturally structured trace inductions, metaphor (and their improvisation), catalepsy (AMAZING! I did it in five minutes with autosuggestion), posthypnotic suggestion, and even self-hypnosis, explicit and step-by-step instructions on how to structure and conduct the hypnotic interview, extensive information on amnesia and and other traditional hypnotic phenomena, all written in a very readable, friendly, readily-understandable style. There is nothing dry and clinical about this book, but there is a wealth of PRACTICAL techniques and protocols that cannot be found in other manuals.
It does draw heavily on some basic ideas from NLP (neurolinguistic programming), but even if you are completely unfamiliar with NLP, this book still has a lot to offer. Much of the NLP material you will need is summarized in an appendix of the book. My entire model of hypnotherapy has been revolutionized thanks to "Training Trances"!
I have been studying and practicing hypnosis for 16 years, and have only been working with NLP and Ericksonian Hypnosis for the past two. This is the ONE book I wish I had read first! Excellent!

Is what it describes

The introduction and title say it all. This book works on multiple levels. The 'surface structure' of the language describes how to induce trance and help people use their own minds to learn and solve problems for themselves. Beneath that, it did the same thing for me since it teaches the multi-level communication by being written multi-leveled language. The introduction indicates that this level of communication is the intent, that when reading the book, you might find your mind 'drifting' or you might find yourself contemplating the words and your own thoughts before continuing instead of reading straight through. A great book to learn from, both from the perspective of wanting to learn the techniques and from the perspective of wanting to help myself.
