A one-of-a-kind modern masterpiece: impressive, oppressive, and highly idiosyncratic

This book is certainly not for everyone. The co-chairs make sure to state in their introduction ("To the reader of NETS") that it is intended for "a biblically well-educated audience...that has a more than passing interest in traditions of biblical liturature other than their own." And, in accord with Nida & Taber's thoughts on translations (1982), it is envisaged as "a translation in the present-day literary language, so as to communicate to the well-educated constituency."

The primary text runs 1027 pages. The paper is of pretty high quality, though the typeface is a bit smallish. Each printed page of text is only about approximately 6 inches wide and 9 inches tall. There are no maps. The footnotes tend to follow the NRSV.

Also, remember that this is an English translation of a Greek translation of a Hebrew/Aramaic original (except for a few that are originally in just the Greek (e.g., Editions to Esther), and that the English translation uses the NRSV as its foundational base (versus the NKJV for the Orthodox Study Bible's Septuagint-derived OT). Thus, it can often read...idiosyncratically. It is its own unique translation.

Any potential reader must keep aware of their choices regarding places and names. That that are "as translations of Herew (or Aramaic), i.e., names in general use in the Hellenstic world apart from the LXX" are in their modern standard English equivalent. So they use Egypt and Syria. However, "as transcriptions of Hebre (or Aramaic), i.e., names produced de nove from the source language" are translated as English transcriptions. Thus, David is Dauid. And Solomon is Salomon. Thus, this can be a bit of a hard casual read as the reader has to keep reminding himself of the name in question. For example, Leviticus is Leuitikon, Deuteronomy is Deuteronomion, Joshua is Iesous, Ruth is Routh, Judith is Ioudith, Maccabees is Makkabees, Ecclesiastes is Ecclesiast, etc. (The spellings might only appeal to RCs who love their Vulgate (from the Latin).) This can really slow down the modern English speaker who is so used to the modern spellings. Thus this book isn't designed for liturgical use or as a truly modern English equivalent work using standardized spellings.

Most of the books are translated from the Gottingen Edition (a long-term work in progress). Where they are not, they revert back to the older Rahlfs (Stuttgart: 1935). e.g., Proverbs & Ecclesiastes. The order followed appears to be fully congruent with the Greek Orthodox Church variant (see Orthodox Study Bible, 2008, though this excludes 4 Maccabees), broken out into 4 categories (Laws, Histories, Poetic Books, and Prophecies); the Apocrypha/Deutero-canonical books are included interspersed throughout the OT, and it ends with Daniel (which goes Susanna/Daniel/Bel & the Dragon).

What makes this work so valuable include:

- letter to the reader from the co-chairs,
- the identification of each translator for each specifc work,
- the wonderful introductions for each work by the individual translator, and, most importantly,
- the Psalms of Solomon are translated,
- the additional variant readings of various books.

Thus there are two versions of Judges, Esther, Tobit, and Daniel (including the additions, in Old Greek and Theodotion versions). These additional versions are worth the price of the book alone!

A few small things bug me.

- The Prayer of Manasses (Manasseh), translated from Rahlfs' Ode 12, is buried at the end of Psalms, after Psalm 151.
- The Book of Nehemiah is in 2 Esdras 11-23; it is just barely noted in the introduction and text.
- There is no lengthy discussion about the Septuagint in general, or its use of the Septuagint in the Christian Church over the centuries (e.g., Orthodox & Roman Catholic (canonical scripture) vs Anglican/Lutheran (in Bible but not used for dogma) vs general Protestant (not in Bible)), or the differences in the "canon" of these works across Orthodox (longest), Roman Catholic (shortest), with Anglican & Lutheran disagreeing (in 1 & 2 Esdras: in Anglican KJV but not Luther's Bible), though each has slightly more books than Roman Catholic. Anyone interested in the Septuagint should have, read, and study this outstanding work. It deserves to be in any serious English-speaking Christian's biblical library. The Septuagint was the OT used by Greek-speaking Jews in the period before and after Christ, and thus was the basis for the early Church's OT, used by the Apostles and the Patristic Fathers.

Very useful translation

This is a very useful translation of the LXX, complete with extensive introductions to each book by the individual translators, giving insight into their views on the original Hebrew to Greek translators, the translation peculiarities of each book, and their own approach to translating the Greek, which does not always line up completely with the committee consensus (see the last part of the introduction to Joshua, where the translator admits he ended up gradually straying from the conscious effort to be as close to the NRSV as possible, where possible).

Until I bought this copy of NETS, I had been using Sir Lancelot Brenton's translation online. I have already found that the NETS comes much closer to my understanding of the Greek, with the added bonus of it losing the archaic language of Brenton (though what's not to like about Saul angrily calling Jonathan "thou son of traitorous damsels!"?). In addition, NETS translates both A and B textual traditions in Judges, unlike Brenton (though as I only utilize Brenton online, I am not entirely sure if the book version would have both), and this is useful when comparing to Rahlfs. I find NETS to be much more suited to delving into the text of the LXX, both in the scope of its translation and its updated language.

That all being said, just as the LXX itself was the work of many translators, so is this NETS, and most translators were just given one book each to translate, with a few exceptions. So one is never going to agree with all of the translation choices. For example, 1 Reigns (1 Samuel) 10:12 has "is Saul also among the prophets?" as becoming an "illustration" in Israel, rather than a "parable", even though the Greek word itself is "parabole". Strictly speaking, "illustration" can be considered a valid choice, but it seems to me like the translator is being a bit too cute, especially as the same word is translated as "proverb" in the NRSV itself, and then consistently translated as "parable" in the NRSV New Testament. Furthermore, the different meanings of "illustration" in English actually make it a more confusing translation choice. Decisions like this give rise to the suspicion that the translator is sometimes a little more concerned with giving their own unique rendition as opposed to the most obvious and clear translation. However, these kind of personal disagreements are unavoidable with someone else's translation, and to me the weight of NETS definitely falls comfortably on the side of accuracy.

I expect one's view of NETS would be based a lot on context too. I can't imagine it being too readable as a purely English version, but for breaking down the Koine of the LXX, it is fantastic. Used in tandem with the Analytical Lexicon to the Septuagint, I am finding NETS to be an extremely useful tool indeed, and am extremely happy with the purchase.

Excellent LXX

The NETS is the single best translation of the Septuagint on the market (at least at the moment). The translation follows an ultra-literal method of translation they call "interlinear". The reason for this is that the LXX follows the same pattern and is very jarring. So, where the Hebrew and LXX agree, they translate the Hebrew text and translate it as literally as possible following the LXX at the same time. Where it disagrees, they follow the LXX.

It has as a "boiler-plate" the NRSV, but it eschews many NRSV translation principles like gender-inclusive language. All gender-inclusive language except when the LXX's language is itself gender-inclusive (and this happens). The method of translation further removes it from its English parent. In the end, the only way you can know that it started as an NRSV would be to read the introduction.

It really only has a few drawbacks. First, because the Bible is written for scholarly study, it is not useful for liturgical use or for private devotional use. Its language would also be too hard for the average reader because of its audience. This, however, is its stated goal. It may be a draw-back, but that's a side-effect of what it set out to do.

I do not like the way they translated "pnevma theou" as "divine wind" in Genesis. It's justifiable to a point (it means "breath" and "wind" as much as it does "spirit), but everywhere else I checked they translated translated "pnevma" as "spirit". It should be consistent. The reason for this is plainly obvious: it was produced by an inter-religious committee of Christians and Jews. Since Jews are not Trinitarians, and that would be a valid understanding of the Hebrew and to a degree of the Greek, they would naturally not want anything like this. Christians, almost from the beginning, have made the connection between "Spirit of God" in Genesis and "Holy Spirit". The connection is further exasperated in English, because "spirit" for us does not have the same range of meaning as it does in Greek or Hebrew. So, the only fault I can give them is that it is an inconsistent translation, not that it's an invalid one.

The prefaces also almost invariably favor the theory that the LXX is a translation with liberties over that it has a different parent text. Both are truly present, but we generally cannot tell when the LXX reading cannot be derived from repointing or re-dividing the Hebrew words (at that time, they had not yet pointed the text or put spaces in it, and so there were more ways to interpret the consonants than in its current form). Again, however, they do not say anything that is invalid regarding the relation of the LXX and its parent text. I simply divide the text differently than they do and so do not always like the introductions' emphasis.

Going back to its strengths, its production standards were exceptional. The binding is excellent, the font is excellent, and it has generous margins. It even does this by being as cheap as the "cheap" Bibles. Short of going back to rag paper, this is about as good as I would normally expect.

Overall, if you have good reading skills, I would reccomend this translation hands-down over any other English translation.

The fourth edition has been revised throughout, and includes new sections on Fourier analysis, Patterson maps, direct methods, charge flipping, group theory in crystallography, and a new chapter on the description of physical properties of crystals by tensors (Chapter 14).

Christopher Hammond, University of Leeds, Institute for Materials Research

Christopher Hammond was educated at The Gateway School, Leciester, The University of Cambridge (BA, 1964) and The University of Leeds (Ph.D, 1968). From 1968 to 2005 he was Lecturer, then Senior Lecturer, in the Department of Metallurgy (later the Insitute for Materials Research) and carried out research on titanium alloys. He is a Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society and a Life Fellow of the University of Leeds. He has long experience of teaching with the University and RMS courses.

Absolute Must! Starting point for all physical and materials scientists

"Absolute must" for solid state physicists, materials scientists, and others who need to understand the basics of crystallography.

My solid state physics background focused primarily on cubic crystals (SC, BCC, FCC), briefly touched on hexagonal close packed, and virtually completely ignored everything else. Standard solid state physics textbooks (e.g. Kittel, and Ashcroft & Mermin) are inadequate for understanding the various crystalline structures. I wish I had Hammond's textbook to read "before" embarking on Kittel and/or Ashcroft-Mermin.

THIS textbook gives you an excellent and thorough background. The first six chapters (through reciprocal space) are an absolute must as a starting point for all physical and materials scientists. There are several excellent chapters on diffraction, projections, and Fourier analysis. Of importance, which virtually all solid state physics texts ignore, is a chapter on tensors and their use in non-ideal, non-isotropic cases, which is reality.

Most textbooks assume isotropic cases, and leave the reader in the dark about non-isotropic cases. 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rank tensors are covered, which is excellent. Another book that covers tensors is "Physical Properties of Crystals: Their Representation by Tensors and Matrices," by J. F. Nye (timeless classic). However Nye doesn't cover crystalline structures (assumes you have background), which is where Hammond's book should be read first, followed by Nye's book for non-ideal, non-isotropic cases where tensors are vital.

*Hammond includes answers to many exercises in the back, which makes this book ideal for self-study.*

JOURNEY OF AWAKENING

You are holding this book and probably wondering . . . what is Supreme Influence?

Why is Supreme Influence important? Because we have been influenced through upbringing, society, schools, religions, media, and culture. Studies show that by the time we are 8 years old, we have had over ­twenty-­five thousand hours of linguistic programming. Words have been downloaded to us, imprinting our minds with ideas about who we are and what is or isn’t possible. These subconsciously ingrained beliefs fuel our thoughts and drive our behaviors until we wake up!

This book is a journey of awakening to a deeper understanding of who you are and why you are here. These pages offer you wisdom and practical tools to transcend reactive tendencies so you authentically embody your magnificence. You will learn advanced communication skills to improve your business, enhance your relationships, and enrich every area of your life. You will learn how to align your thoughts, focus, beliefs, body language, words, goals, and vision with your true purpose and authentic self.

Regardless of what you’ve experienced up until now, you absolutely can rapidly and often instantly transform challenges, realize your vision, and inspire others through your example. Let me share a story with you about how I discovered this for myself.

WAKING UP

At age 15 I embarked on a quest for freedom, truth, and ­enlightenment—­except back then I called it “running away from home.” I hopped on the back of a friend’s motorcycle, not sure where I was going or what I would do. I just knew something had to change. I was going through a rebellious phase, resisting my parents, opposing the strict religious school I was forced to attend, and being frustrated in a world that ­didn’t make sense to me.

So, I scribbled a runaway note, stabbed it onto a dartboard, and disappeared into the night. At the time I felt like I ­didn’t belong, as though my parents and others surrounding me ­didn’t see me, hear me, or care to understand. I kept asking myself, How did I get on this planet? I felt trapped. Alone. I ­didn’t understand the world I was living in and felt powerless to change it. I suppose I only saw two options back then: fight or flight. After years of disagreeing and ­arguing—­I left.

What brought me to that point? I was raised by conservative Cuban parents in Miami. I went to Catholic school and partook of confession, communion, rosaries, and penance. I sold doughnuts at Sunday morning service. I was told what was right and wrong, good and bad, moral and immoral. If my intuition led me in a different direction than the rules, I ­wasn’t allowed to follow it.

Then, when I was 12, a traumatic event shook my family. My parents changed religion and radically changed the rules. I felt ambushed. We stopped celebrating holidays. We went to church up to three times a week. By 13 I was in a new school that ­didn’t allow listening to rock ’n’ roll music or dancing. I remember sneaking in Bon Jovi cassettes and paying the consequences in detention hall, where I was made to write countless dictionary definitions (a “punishment” that gave me glimpses of the power of words). Shorts were banned, even during physical education class, and replaced with ­Smurf-­blue culottes. I had never heard of “culottes,” and soon learned it was a divided skirt ending just below the knee. I hated playing soccer in those culottes. Actually, I hated my life. I felt confused and controlled. It ­didn’t make sense that my parents’ new way would be right and everyone else in the world following a different path would burn in hell for all eternity. I was craving answers to some major questions: Who am I? What is my purpose? Why am I here? I was yearning to know myself, to understand my place in the world, in the cosmos. I was longing to know God, to feel God, to understand the truth about God.

For three years I plotted my escape. Several times I packed my schoolbag with a few possessions and hid it in my bedroom closet, only to chicken out. Eventually pain outweighed fear. I could no longer follow rules and traditions without understanding their source and reason. I felt like a volcano on the brink of eruption. The angst manifested in my body as strange ailments doctors ­couldn’t diagnose, including an engorged lower lip and a stiff neck that caused me to hunch to one side like a prettier version of the Elephant Man. I had nothing to look forward to, but right then “nothing” sounded a lot better than the “something” I was experiencing. I had to get out.

After leaving home, I skipped school and spent the next few weeks bouncing from place to place. With no skills or experience, just sheer determination, I acted older to get jobs. I sold gym memberships and credit card machines, hawked knives ­door-­to-­door, and worked one gig at an eclectic clothing boutique called “Ouch,” which sounded like I felt, for $4 an hour in cash. I ate budget meals: ­33¢-­a-­box mac ’n’ cheese; a cup of noodles for variety. Eventually I rented a room with no furniture and saved for a futon and a TV, which turned out to have only one ­channel—­poltergeist static.

By the time I was 16, I had officially dropped out of high school, my best friend had died, I had been raped, and I felt awful about myself and my life. Not knowing what to do, I decided to go back home. My dad was grateful; he even gave me his older red Honda Prelude. But soon home life grew disharmonious. My parents and I ­didn’t understand how to communicate without getting upset. One day I had an argument with my mom and left the house. When I returned the next day, my books and clothes were in a bag on the front porch waiting for the donation truck pickup, and my bedroom was painted a different color. I knew deep down we all loved one another. I yearned for a way to create understanding and bridge worlds.

Once again I left home. I was grateful for my little red Prelude, which I parked across the street from the airport to watch the planes take off, pretending I was journeying to a ­far-­off exotic land. I ­didn’t realize it then, but watching those planes soar into the sky sparked my search for who I would become. I began visualizing myself living free and traveling the world. I saw myself riding a camel at sunrise by the Great Pyramids in Egypt. I saw myself swimming with wild dolphins in the sea. I saw pictures in my mind of the life I wanted. Feeling a surge of energy, I declared, “I will find a way to do what I want to do!” Then something inside me snapped. It felt as if my soul cracked open, unleashing a fierce resolve to find answers, feel peace, and discover a way to create a magnificent life. Beyond the chaos, I had a silent knowing that my life had a ­purpose—I was destined for more. I made a decision. Something had to change . . . and I had to change it.

My resolve created a sense of personal power and direction. Yet I had no idea what to do next. Throughout the day I recited a mantra I had read in the Bible: Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and the door shall open. I spoke these words passionately, believing an answer would come. And in a flash one did, in the form of a thought: Go back to school and study business. I followed this inner guidance. Before my peers graduated from high school, I had earned my high school equivalency certificate. By 17 I had enrolled in community college. I stopped watching TV and listening to the radio and let go of “friendships” that held me back. The desire for something better was so intense that I severed ties with my former life and dove into new ­environments—­ones demanding more of me than I ever believed I had.

I began making conscious choices, aiming far beyond the standards of my past and saying to myself: Whatever you feed grows and whatever you starve dies. Investing in books became more important than buying food or clothes. James Redfield’s novel The Celestine Prophecy gave me hope; it spoke to my inner knowledge that all things are connected and divine serendipity surrounds us when we have awareness to see it. Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People inspired me to become a person of influence. I wanted to influence my parents, create understanding, and bridge worlds without selling out. I practiced what I learned, and soon my parents and I were listening instead of reacting. I realized I could communicate to get agreement instead of resistance. Before turning 18, I moved back into my parents’ home.

More important than influencing others, I began influencing myself. My life became a laboratory. Reading those books awakened me to the Supreme power language had to influence my thinking and transform circumstance. “The Bible was right,” I thought. “We do create with words!” I stopped complaining. I stopped blaming my parents. I stopped talking about what was “wrong.” Instead I listened, opened my heart, pictured what I wanted, and spoke about it as if it were happening now. And that affirmative language worked! In my first few semesters at school I earned straight A’s, won academic awards, and even got a scholarship. I became the student body president of the largest community college in the United States. My physiology shifted too. I was standing taller, breathing deeper, and feeling greater potency. I was seeing myself from a new perspective, one of love and appreciation.

A few months before finishing community college, I answered a newspaper ad for a ­part-­time job. The interview was in a hotel. As I pulled up to the valet ­driv­ing my mom’s blue Monte Carlo, the car died right there in front of the hotel. Embarrassed, I walked in to my interview and saw something I had never seen before. One thousand excited people had also showed up in the room where my “interview” was to take place. At the head of the room, the woman onstage was wearing a white suit and jeweled ornamentation. Captivated by her presentation, I fell hook, line, and sinker for a pyramid scheme. I saw the glamour and success I thought I wanted so badly that I invested all my energy, my savings, and my credit card limit. The government shut down the company. By age 18 I was shuffling close to $40,000 in debt and my car was full of unsold water filters and vitamins.

Often the experiences that challenge us the most are the ones that harbor the greatest gifts. This challenge introduced me to the book that became my greatest mentor: The Law of Success by Napoleon Hill. “In every adversity lies the seed of equal or greater opportunity,” Hill wrote. I devoured this text with a pen, highlighter, and journal in hand. I searched for the opportunities buried beneath my challenges. I wanted freedom, and at that time the only way I could imagine realizing it was through money. With certainty and focused intensity, I wrote down my first goal, or as Hill puts it, my “definite chief aim.” I declared: “I earn $100,000 or more per year.”

By age 20 I achieved my declaration. I made my first $100,000 per year while traveling the country as the top corporate trainer for Anthony Robbins (the ­world-­renowned transformational teacher and motivational guru). By 24 I was traveling the world, riding camels by the Great Pyramids, and swimming with wild dolphins in the Red Sea, just as I imagined that day at the airport. I had proof that my external reality would shift when my internal and external communication shifted. Rapidly my whole life ­improved—­my attitude, my relationships, my finances, my eating habits, my wardrobe, my living situation, my confidence, and my peace of mind. I was learning, achieving goals, doing what I loved, and feeling free!

I used my focus and language to change my life. I realized I had been raised and influenced to think, speak, and perceive the world in certain predictable ways, and although several of these beliefs served me well, many of them did not. Now I could choose beliefs that worked and contemplate, challenge, and ultimately transform those that ­didn’t. I noticed times when constricting beliefs surfaced, but because I was aware of them, I was no longer held captive! I could ask, “Hmm, is this ­really true? Where did this belief come from?” Through my own experience, I understood that I could direct my focus, choose my language, and empower myself, no matter what! I ­wasn’t a victim of circumstance. I had the power to transform my life! I had Supreme Influence.

That’s my story. Well, part of it. ­What’s yours? Why are you here? If you could consciously create anything in your life, what would it be? What is most important to you? What do you ­really want? Is it freedom? Happiness? Fulfilling work that produces prosperity? Do you want intimacy, a powerful partnership, juicy sacred love, or all of the above? Do you want to transform a recurring problem? Stop settling for less than what you are capable of? Do you want to feel lean, healthy, and energized? Be the most tuned-­in, amazing parent to your beautiful child? Build your dream home or sacred sanctuary? Travel the world? What are you inspired to create? If you had a magic wand and could wave it to manifest your heart’s desire instantly, what would you call forth? What if you knew that right now you have the power to summon and embody all these experiences and more? With Supreme Influence, you can!

When your thoughts, focus, physiology, expressions, language, beliefs, goals, and vision flow through your Supreme Self, you have power! And I don’t mean power over any person or thing. A Must

Niurka’s SUPREME INFLUENCE is a major contribution. It’s great for anyone looking for an empowering way of thinking.
I love this book. It is clear, practical, and to the point. Niurka uses personal examples with a very down-to-earth tone. Nothing preachy about her writing.

The ending, however, came as a surprise.

I got lost at sea in the boat metaphor.

Maybe other readers will find meaning and coherence where I did not, but for me, the ending seemed disconnected from the theme and purpose of the book. At the finale, I didn’t know if I was reading a self-help book on empowered thinking or spiritual book on enlightenment and world peace.
Without the last part, I’d have given SUPREME INFLUENCE five stars hands down.

The message—at least for most of the book—is so empowering and important I recommend this book to anyone. Perhaps with an added remark that if the ending doesn’t resonate, don’t let that take away from the core teaching of the book.

Life changer. Excellent read.

NLP evolved... Niurka combines NLP, ancient wisdom and other sciences and knowledge to articulate different practices in our communication that can elevate our awareness and quality of life.

I have taken her courses, and this book is a great introduction to her methodology, practices, and way of living. Her work has helped me change my life. From being shy and living feeling confined by my parent's and society's expectations to being a powerful speaker, active community leader, and a better wife, daughter, friend, mother, and sister. My communication is in alignment with my values and people take me seriously. I can be playful and fully self-expressed. Using her coursework, my husband and I have been able to identify our values, modify those that weren't in alignment with what we wanted our values to be... and now we live by those values... and have been able to produce the lifestyle of our choosing. We are now both stay at home parents.

A Mixed Bag

This book is a mixed bag:a little Buddhism;a lot of Joel Osteen(think it and it will be yours); and a load of ego driven thinking(tiresome passage on her tough trip to Bali and how she was able to get a red Mercedes and why she decided to sell a product she had not yet created;oh,and who can forget her three months of hiking naked in the desert). Basically, her message is to think in positive frames ( a simple but useful idea) that she pounds away over and over. There is an excellent and useful chapter on the formulating of questions and their use. Better and shorter books covering the same territory.

Loses its intended clarity by getting you lost in lawyerly verbosity

This book is inexcusably horrible, without any consolation for brevity or the like. It is quite seriously the worst textbook I've been required to use in law school. Its like the author didn't really understand the goals of accounting beyond the operational forms discussed. On a very practical level, there is often no sign of continuity among the chapters, or a contextual basis for the methods used within its pages. The author, frankly, often "loses the forest for the trees." Though they explain the goals of the tasks to be performed at the outset of each chapter, they then lose all sight of clarity by including needless terms and illustrations filled with vacuous truisms when performing the actual accounting functions. Additionally, the author often refers back to examples far back in the book without giving you a specific page number to go searching for - not only is it infuriating (as the author could have simply copied the information referred to), but the last thing a student of accounting needs to be doing is going on a scavenger hunt while trying to remain clear on the intended task.

Obviously, the result is that this highly intelligent author overly complicates the subject and make it far too difficult for a group (law students) that is generally a bit wary of anything involving numbers. This cannot be the case for a "For Lawyers" book, whose implicit goal is to obviate confusion. These authors, by lobbing words at a task in the hope that maybe we students will somehow grasp the concepts by combing through their verbosity, are defeating their own purpose.

Before assigning this book, I quite seriously recommend professors take a look at "Accounting for Dummies, 4th Edition" -- though it obviously does not hold the "For Lawyers" distinction, which seems to harbor some anodyne hope of giving the textbook some dubious worth, it at least provides the pedagogical material the textbooks tries to without the unnecessary opaqueness. I bought this "Dummies" book halfway through my course and understand so much more of the course material than I do when mining the textbook for information. This should not be the case - its entirely unfair to use a difficult textbook when so many more straightforward materials are out there.

Overly complicating this course with a book as priggish and out of touch as Prof. Cunningham's is really quite unfair to us students, as it takes a brave soul to take an accounting course in law school.

Boy who refused to read EVERYTHING loved this book!

My husband and I both LOVE to read and we never worried that our son would grow to enjoy it, too. Yet by the time 3rd grade rolled around, we had a child who HATED reading books. The bookcase in our living room grew heavier with more enticing tales and he wouldn't read a single page in any of them. He enjoyed the books I read aloud to him very much but he simply refused to read on his own. "Diary of a Whimpy Kid!" everyone shouted. He wouldn't touch them. "Hatchet!" they urged. We read it aloud after he refused to begin it on his own. Then someone said "Buy the four dollar 'I Survived' series and trust me, he will read from then on." Yeah, okay.

Since my son had recently shown interest in the Titanic after watching a documentary, I bought this book used off Amazon just to see if it would spark his interest. It arrived in the mail and he was happy when I told him the package was for him. He opened it and was curious. He actually read a page.
Now, I'll be honest. The book sat for months untouched. Then one day he decided to look at it again, all on his own. He read a few more pages. Next thing we knew he was refusing to turn off his light and go to sleep because he was reading. He was ignoring my requests for him to put away his laundry because he was reading. He wouldn't stop and eat breakfast because he was reading. HE WAS READING! It worked!!!

I'm very grateful to the person who first told me to try this series. It grab's a child's interest and holds on so they keep turning those pages. If you are in the same boat that we just got out of with a boy who won't read, consider trying this book!

My 8yr old loves- Real Historical Events from a child's perspective

Another winner from the I survived book series! My son loves anything Titanic and this book was no exception. The reason we love this series so much is that it is from a child's perspective based on real events in history, and my son loves non-fiction stories so it merries the two very nicely. Sometimes the subjects might seem too scary-real for some children but you will have to decide that for yourself based on your own child. I think most kids over the age of 6 will love these read to them until they are old enough to read on own. I love reading them with him as well because I tend to learn lots of things, too! I believe these are written for the average reader that is between 8-10 years old. Enjoy!

My 9-year-old who HATES reading begged me for this whole series for Christmas.

I have a fourth grader who absolutely REFUSES to read but he's gotten hooked on this series and begged me to buy him the whole set for Christmas. I have another fourth grader and sixth grader who also enjoy them, but it's the non-reader that got my attention. Anything that interests him is worth it in my book! Typically, he sets a timer after school to keep track of how long he's supposed to "read" (although much of that time is spent staring out the window or checking the timer to see what's left). When he started these books, suddenly, he would keep reading past his timer and tell me he couldn't stop till he found out what happened. I think they're supposed to be second - third grade books but several of my boys love them.

SIMPLY POWERFUL!

In a world where "religion" has complicated God to epic proportions, or where cynicism has reduced Him to a figment of our imaginations; - a man takes God at His Word, and then God takes the man at HIS! What happens is totally unexpected, and the outcome even more so. I started reading this aloud to my family as a "taster" - and three hours later closed the book, finished! It's TRUE, frightening yet comforting, awesome, and so simply written that your children could read it and understand. I recommend they do so - after you!

It is hard to put this book down!

This is a book that compels you to keep reading until the very last page. 'Theophany' is not a complicated `theology textbook'. It's a really easy to read, down to earth, but truly inspiring personal account of the often miraculous way God has incredibly changed the circumstances for this family at times when things really couldn't have been much worse. Without giving too much away, I also enjoyed reading the often `lighter side' of the story from Garths wife (Stephanie) too. Thanks to both of you for sharing your incredible story!

This is a gripping true story, retold with such naked faith and with complete openness - that it is a truly compelling read!

The traumatic events of this family's life are laid out before the reader and you are swept along with these incredible trials that Garth faces with characteristic doggedness and the support of his wife.

A story such as this, gives you a warm insight into the human spirit to overcome and the faith that guides and protects and saved Garth.

A Valuable Book for new Entrepreneurs

The title of this book is a misnomer. There is no "breakthrough" to be found here. Everything the book covers are basic, tried and true tenants of marketing and sales development that have been codified and refined over decades and, in some cases, generations. The important marketing building blocks of Positioning, Differentiation, Targeting, Personas, and so on are covered, but not in great depth. For instance, in 1981, Al Ries wrote the seminal marketing book: "Positioning - The Battle for Your Mind", which is a nearly 500 page study of just this one concept. In Mr. Diehl's book it's covered in a few pages. However, it is covered quite well.

In some cases Mr. Diehl makes simply uninformed statements. For instance on page 76 he talks of a "New phenomenon in marketing called Education Marketing". In fact, companies like John Deere and DeBeers Diamond were doing education marketing 100 years ago. Before the advent of radio advertising most companies utilized long form education marketing because there were not the time constraints of the 30-second broadcast ad. In the last 10 years, education marketing has come back into vogue because people have become so numbed by the overwhelming onslaught of short form advertising they are subjected to, they simply tune it out. “Content Marketing”, which is simply old-school education marketing, is the new marketing buzz-word.

Mr. Diehl’s book ranges far-a-field and sometimes seems to lack focus. It covers multiple subjects in marketing and sales and even touches on subjects like executive presence and the importance of a good phone voice. This is not a fault, as I believe the author is just excited to give his audience all the important information he can, but it is a distraction.

Here is where the book shines and where I think it’s quite substantial value is: The book is targeted towards young entrepreneurs who, perhaps, lack a formal business education or real entrepreneurial experience. The subjects Mr. Diehl covers are absolutely essential to the success of any entrepreneurial endeavor. Many entrepreneurs get into business because they have an idea and passion, energy and a lot of heart. These attributes will take you far, but I've seen so many young organizations fail, crashing the hopes, dreams and financial fortunes of their founders along with them, simply because there was no knowledge of basic business fundamentals.

Brand Identity Breakthrough does an excellent job of introducing some of the most important components of a successful brand development, marketing and sales program. Mastery of these components is central to any company's success. In my 30 year business career I have started 12 companies and I have consulted with many more. I have found that being successful in business is really just a matter of understanding how business works, what its fundamental building blocks are, and the levers you can pull as a manager to accomplish your goals. This book illustrates very well the building blocks surrounding the marketing and sales process. By reading the book, new entrepreneurs will learn about business functions and skillsets that they will desperately require to be successful. Just the knowledge of a proper marketing and sales system will save many businesses from making critical mistakes.

Simply put, the book is a very good overview and conceptual primer on many critically important marketing and sales functions. Reading it will help any new entrepreneur immeasurably.

Mr. Diehl is a very talented writer, and he is able to illustrate complex ideas in easy to understand, sometimes almost poetic language. He often speaks about the purpose and practice of business in philosophical terms that are evocative and powerful. This is Mr. Diehl’s first book, and, in my opinion, he has the potential to be a very influential and accomplished business writer.

Brand Identity Breakthrough is light on actual application and tactical practice. It would be great if the author would follow it up with a more "hands-on" guide to implementing the principles he writes about here. Perhaps that is in the plans, but for now, as an easy-to-read overview of critically important business functions, that can spell the difference between success and failure, the book is spot on and highly valuable.

An excellent, helpful book

This book itself is a breakthrough about brand identity. It has a rare quality, getting you to look at a specific topic and even, remarkably, all of life through new perspectives. I am grateful to Gregory for writing this book. I come with some context having an MBA in my past and have read my fair share of business books. This is an excellent book, in tune with modern unfolding ways of understanding business.

The communication is crystal clear.

I can also see from the insights he offers about the nature of how people are and function that he has been on a great journey of personal expansion. He brings expertise from various different domains to bear on his profound understanding of the world of marketing and branding.

Clear Core Values + Communication Bridge = Repeat Sales

Mr. Diehl’s Table of Contacts is quite intriguing. The topics made me hearken back to studying marketing & public relations a couple years back, plus two authors’ and their books on marketing, Peter Guber: Tell to Win and Joe Vitale: Hypnotic Writing.
Public Relations and Marketing dwells on the development of your brand identity and unique selling proposition to be heard above the noise in the marketplace, but unlike school that grazes over the challenges and the implementation, Mr. Diehl’s book gives you step-by-step analysis to put into practice.
Mr. Diehl reminds us that we, as entrepreneurs must be adaptable to survive. He further reminds us by using a saying I like that unless you are growing you are dying (or as I say going backwards-which is definitely another form of dying). Many of the larger companies that thought they were too big to have to be adaptable are no longer in existence or are dying. Think Blockbuster in recent past, especially when Netflix came along and now slowly Kodak, because of the digital explosion.
What does this have to do with Mr. Diehl’s book and brand identity for you, you ask. Think of brand identity as one of the biggest and most useful of tools in your entrepreneurial tool chest (Maybe pliers.) and you will use it more often, rather that creating it, putting on a shelf and massaging it from time to time. First of all Mr. Diehl gives you three questions to ask yourself, (the CEO/Founder) of the company and then the subsequent staff or partners to get down to the nuts and bolts of not just why the business was created and why will the targeted audience desire to use the product or service. Mr. Diehl emphasizes that our businesses must be viewed from it specific niche audiences’ point-of-view. Often entrepreneurs fall in love with the idea of their businesses and its usefulness without any real thought or testing behind it other than the fact that they are in love with it, so why wouldn’t everyone else (in their niche) be in love with it too.
Mr. Diehl offers three questions that will get to the heart of the matter and encourages you, the entrepreneur to delve even deeper into the main marketing ideas. Marketing is closer to public relations than it is to sales, even though marketing and sales are more often than not thrown together. And yes, marketing does feed sales, but as Mr. Diehl points out it is after the relationship has been built between product or service provider and their customer, that the sales come. And this is even if you’ve never spoken to your potential client or customer. Your website and what you say on it starts your stepping stone to a relationship. In hopes of it being a repeat relationship through sales.
Rightfully so, marketing is the communication bridge between you the entrepreneur and your best and recurring client (sales). Mr. Diehl goes on to suggest entrepreneurs get as personable as possible on the website, print materials or even person-to-person, so that the client/customer can feel a connection with them. The connection is beyond the product or service and more to the ideas, values and plain understanding of who their client is, why they’d desire your product or service once and then repeatedly.
As we get more and more disconnected in our everyday lives through electronics and social media it becomes imperative that the values behind the products and services are clear and understood by your client. Not in a superficial way just to sell something, but in a meaningful way, that shows who you and your staff or company is when it comes to your value principles. These value principles hold each client/customers up as someone special to the company, on the client/customer’s terms, not the company’s. And isn’t that what most people are desirous of experiencing? They’d rather be treated well and special rather than just another number to be gotten through.
Coaches or mentors are always telling the entrepreneur, “Get clear about who you are within your business.” Or “Don’t say you are “a _____, that doesn’t make you special enough from anyone else doing the same or similar thing.” Or “How are your services different and why would someone buy from you?” Maybe in the past you knew the answers to all of these, but were unable to express them at the drop of a hat to your immediate audience or even to friends to make them wish to get more details. Mr. Diehl’s book assists you in getting to the heart of the why and who you, your staff, your company’s values and your targeted audiences’ chief desires.
It’s an easy and understandable read complete with complementary case studies so that we get a feel of what someone like us has gone through to feel from the inside-out what their company is all about and how it can make their target audience happy answering most if not all of their desires. Being able to do that helps them and helps the entrepreneur feel confident and secure. You and your target niche benefit from your self-evaluation and offering them value-based services geared to making them happy. Their happiness can with solid footing, as long as it can and you continue re-emphasizing and growing through your core values.
