Dreams

The meaning of dreams explained in this book, in my estimation was very elementary; I think I was looking for a more scientific-type of book, one that perhaps was based on actual case studies.

Dream Dictionary
By Tiffany
This book is very useful to me since God deals with me a lot in dreams. Now everything in the book is not a scientific fact, but it hits home every now and then. If you are a dreamer, still rely on what things mean to you. For example, if you love cats and you have a dream about cats - most likely the cats in the dream represent something good is coming. So if the book says that seeing cats in your dreams is evil (which it doesn't) then that does not mean that your dream was evil. Take the information inside the book with a grain of salt and add a little prayer and you'll be fine. I would buy from this supplier again.

Quite unique this type of Christian principles are no longer taught. Too much emphasis of the worldly gains, spiritual needs are left to all school Christians.

The Devil's Pleasure Palace: The Cult of Critical Theory and the Subversion of the West, by Michael Walsh

In the aftermath of World War II, America stood alone as the world’s premier military power. Yet its martial confidence contrasted vividly with its sense of cultural inferiority. Still looking to a defeated and dispirited Europe for intellectual and artistic guidance, the burgeoning transnational elite in New York and Washington embraced not only the war’s refugees, but many of their ideas as well, and nothing has proven more pernicious than those of the Frankfurt School and its reactionary philosophy of “critical theory.”

In The Devil's Pleasure Palace, Michael Walsh describes how Critical Theory released a horde of demons into the American psyche. When everything could be questioned, nothing could be real, and the muscular, confident empiricism that had just won the war gave way, in less than a generation, to a central-European nihilism celebrated on college campuses across the United States. Seizing the high ground of academe and the arts, the New Nihilists set about dissolving the bedrock of the country, from patriotism to marriage to the family to military service. They have sown, as Cardinal Bergoglio—now Pope Francis—once wrote of the Devil, “destruction, division, hatred, and calumny,” and all disguised as the search for truth.

The Devil's Pleasure Palace exposes the overlooked movement that is Critical Theory and explains how it took root in America and, once established and gestated, how it has affected nearly every aspect of American life and society.

Ambitious--But Uneven and Unsatisfying
By Charles
I read this book because it seemed like it would be an interesting companion to James Burnham’s “Suicide of the West.” Burnham’s book explains and analyzes the ideology of American liberalism, circa 1960. “The Devil’s Pleasure Palace” in a sense continues that story; it explains how that liberalism discovered the Critical Theory leftism of the Frankfurt School, and like Gollum discovering the One Ring, did not benefit from the discovery. “The Devil’s Pleasure Palace” is, indeed, somewhat interesting. But it generally fails at explanation and analysis, instead being mostly a rambling diatribe preaching to the converted.

The core of Walsh’s book is an attack upon the Frankfurt School and its “Critical Theory.” The Frankfurt School was a group of Marxist German scholars, many from Goethe University’s Institute For Social Research in Frankfurt, who fled to the US before and after World War II, and then proceeded to repay this country’s generosity by deliberately destroying its culture. These men included Theodor Adorno, Erich Fromm, Max Horkheimer, and Herbert Marcuse. They also include, in Walsh’s telling, indirectly, men like the Communist Antonio Gramsci (famous for calling for a “long march through the institutions,” though he did not use those exact words, to combat bourgeois “cultural hegemony”) and Georg Lukács, the Hungarian Communist (not to be confused with the writer John Lukács). The key principal of the Frankfurt School was that the existing culture of the West must be destroyed and replaced, because it is irrational and oppressive, originating in and containing nothing good.

Walsh’s premise is that the philosophy collectively promulgated by these men, Critical Theory, was a departure from earlier American liberalism, and a pernicious departure, that has since infected all America with its poison. This infection was accomplished through the adoption and application of the Frankfurt School’s social theories by legions of American-born radicals embedded throughout the key institutions of the West. To Walsh, Critical Theory is merely “cultural Marxism.” And, like economic Marxism, its goal is the destruction of the current society and its replacement by something new, better, and totally different. But instead of the workers being the driving engine, the educated classes would be. “They had been let down by the grubby, unwashed workers of the world, who largely rejected the great gift they had been offered; now they would approach their equals in the intelligentsia, a far more receptive and persuadable audience.”

Among other core ideas of the Frankfurt School much in evidence today, for example in the frenzied demands for political correctness on campus and in the workplace, and in reactions to Donald Trump, is Marcuse’s “repressive tolerance”—the idea that real tolerance consists of intolerance of incorrect views. Or, as Wikipedia summarizes the idea, “Revolutionary minorities hold the truth and the majority has to be liberated from error by being re-educated in the truth by this minority. The revolutionary minority are entitled to suppress rival and harmful opinions.” But Marcuse’s idea is only one of many dubious gifts bestowed on modern America by the Frankfurt School—nearly any organized modern attack on American traditions is at least in part a result of the machinations of the Frankfurt School and its acolytes.

While the degree and emphasis of Critical Theory was new in America, and its impact heightened by other cultural changes, the idea that the existing culture must continuously justify itself to reason and be replaced if rationally determined to be deficient, is as old as America, as seen in the debates between Thomas Paine and Edmund Burke. Attempts to undermine and destroy a society’s culture are nothing new in the post-Enlightenment world, though the Frankfurt School has been uniquely successful in having their corrosive ideas adopted through internal corruption rather than imposed by external force or actual revolution. True, what distinguishes adherents of the Frankfurt School is their nihilism, in that they are less interested in what the new society will be than in destroying the old. This is well covered by Walsh, but he does not tie his discussion to longer-term currents of American political thought, which would have made his analysis stronger.

But linear discussion about the Frankfurt School is actually a small part of the book, and not particularly well developed. My summary above is pieced together. The rest of the book is a rambling series of asides relating political points to classical music, H.P. Lovecraft, Milton, movies from Chinatown to “The Wild One,” and numerous operas (the name of the book is from a Schubert opera). Many of these asides are mildly interesting, and what Walsh is trying to do is, through an artistic lens, tie the evils of Critical Theory to its opposition to the traditional “heroic narrative” of the West. However, the net result feels like a fairly confused mishmash—neither political analysis nor clear social commentary. There is certainly no clear exposition and refutation of the Frankfurt School, which is why I read the book to begin with. And, while most of the book is heavily pessimistic, oddly, Walsh concludes his book on an optimistic note. “No political victory is ever permanent,” and Walsh apparently believes that by returning to the heroic narrative and the explication of virtues, American conservatives can ultimately defeat the poison of Critical Theory. He doesn’t really say how, or develop this throwaway optimism, though. It’s just a jarring conclusion to an ambitious, but ultimately largely incoherent, book.

The cultural collapse of post WW2 America
By Daniel S. Palter
How the Frankfort School ruined everything and how it must be resisted is the basic thesis of the book. I would have preferred a more overtly political critique but this is well worth the read for the underpinnings of what is wrong with the 21st century Atlantic World. Warning: this is a polemic with a definite POV which is traditional Christian in a cultural and sociological sense. If your personal beliefs differ strongly from this you may find the book upsetting as it takes no prisoners.

An elegantly written and researched book. Utterly refreshing to read.
By AberHerrDoktor
This is an elegantly written book. I really love how he provides connections to European history and arts to provide a contextual background for his points.

My only complaint is that I wish he had taken on the insanity of Critical Theory more aggressively. It has now infected almost every aspect of the social 'sciences' in Universities... from feminist 'theory' and Womens Studies, to African-American/Black Studies, Gender Studies, Latino Studies, Media Studies, etc. And yet, there are few (if any, other than this book) conservative writers really addressing the cultural impact of this kind of Marxist-based philosophy... despite the fact that it is now providing activist groups like Black Lives Matter with the same kind of rhetoric as that used by Black Power groups in the 60s.

Americans are supremely unaware of the negative impact of these Marxist ideas on our modern society. I've known 'activists' in some of these groups personally and watched them organize for 'actions' and protests. They have absolutely NO interest in the traditional values of this country. The ones working behind the scenes of the BLM movement are the same people who were pulling the strings of the Occupy movement after the financial meltdown AND the ones protesting the WTO and IMF before that. Remember the Seattle WTO riots? Same people.

We need an educated citizenry in this country... one that can be informed by research other than what's fed to us by the news and tv shows. This book is one great step towards that goal.

Great hands-on intro to Rails
By Clayton A. Cohn
I bought this as my first book to introduce me to rails and was very impressed. You learn by doing, as the entire book has you pretty much building a twitteresque website while learning how everything works as you go. Great way to start off on one of my favorite programming languages.

Pros: Easy to follow, learn by creating, tons of resources. Michael Hartl (the author) has his own rails website to address this book specifically and has code on github and other places that makes this book especially helpful.

Cons: The only con I found was that some of the recommended software was outdated but this is common as books do not keep up with tech. Hartl makes it easy to remedy this as well by listing multiple sources, including his own, that you can utilize.

Bottom Line: If you've ever wanted to create a website, design a program or just automate something, then Rails is the language for you, and this is the perfect start.

Fantastic introduction to Rails -- great writing, great editing
By Seth
I decided to start learning Ruby on Rails after working with Microsoft's .NET technology. My skill level is approximately a mid-level programmer, and someone who is not familiar with Ruby.

I chose Hartl's book to get me started with Rails based on the accolades from the other reviews (here and on StackOverflow) -- and I really must say, they are spot on. This book is extremely well written and proofed. The book "flows" very well -- from basic introductory chapters using simple applications, to more advanced, full featured applications. Hartl introduces Heroku for deploying your application -- and I recommend you follow his advice.

Hartl's writing style is refined and refreshing when compared to other programming books.

I started this book using Windows, however my recommendation to all readers is to not use Windows for this book. You are more than welcome to try, and you honestly won't have many issues at all, but the test driven strategies discussed in Chapter 3 ("Advanced Setup") are hard, if not impossible, to set up on Windows. You will have far less headaches on Linux or MacOS.

(If you are on the fence about purchasing this book because you are an avid Windows user, I suggest you buy the book anyway. It's really that good and the issue in Chapter 3 can be skipped, though I found it so helpful it was worth a switch.)

I highly recommend this book to all programmers looking to get into Rails. If you have never written CSS or HTML before, you may be a little over your head -- but honestly, I think I would still recommend it anyway. Try it to see if you can understand it, then find a CSS/HTML primer to fill in the spots afterwards. This is a rare book that is so well written, it's worth basing your learning around it.

If you are an advanced programmer, you'll find this book a little easy, but that's OK as well. Breeze through the first half of the book, and then get into the more advanced chapters.

All in all, a fantastic book. I only wish Hartl wrote a series of other books on Rails topics so I could buy them too -- maybe in the future :)

Like having a teacher always at your side
By Mercalli Franco
This book is an excellent primer to be introduced effectively and efficiently to the intricacies of the RoR platform.
All major pillars of RoR are covered in great detail.
It also covers practical aspects needed to actually build applications and immediately experiment what you are learning (from installing the RoR system, to selecting and installing support tools, to deploying apps on the Heroku cloud platform).
After reading it, you will gain a solid understanding of RoR allowing you to be immediatley productive.
But its usefulness is not limited to help moving your first steps in RoR.
Even after several months of working with RoR, I find myself continuosly looking for it: it is like having a teacher at your side, to whom refer when you got confused on this or that aspect.
In essence: Ruby is a complex and ramificated subject, Michael manages to teach you that 20% of knowledge you will need 80% of the time.
If you are looking for your first reading on RoR, this is defintely your book.

The Serpent's Shadow (The Kane Chronicles, Book 3), by Rick Riordan

He's b-a-a-ack! Despite their best efforts, Carter and Sadie Kane can't seem to keep Apophis, the chaos snake, down. Now Apophis is threatening to plunge the world into eternal darkness, and the Kanes are faced with the impossible task of having to destroy him once and for all. Unfortunately, the magicians of the House of Life are on the brink of civil war, the gods are divided, and the young initiates of Brooklyn House stand almost alone against the forces of chaos. The Kanes' only hope is an ancient spell that might turn the serpent's own shadow into a weapon, but the magic has been lost for a millennia. To find the answer they need, the Kanes must rely on the murderous ghost of a powerful magician who might be able to lead them to the serpent's shadow . . . or might lead them to their deaths in the depths of the underworld. Nothing less than the mortal world is at stake when the Kane family fulfills its destiny in this thrilling conclusion to the Kane Chronicles.

Review
3Q 4P M The third book in the Kane Chronicles series, The Serpent's Shadow opens with a sense of intrigue. An unnamed narrator claims to be transcribing audio recordings left behind by siblings, Carter and Sadie Cane. A mysterious introduction draws readers in right away-the narrator claims, "The tape arrived at my home in a charred box perforated with claw and teeth marks that my local zoologist could not identify." What adventure-loving teen could fail to be drawn in with such a start? As the story progresses, the siblings continue their study of ancient Egyptian writings and spells, both of which frequently come in handy as they fight against the wrath of evil gods and solicit the help of a few friendly ones. The fast pace and time travel will appeal to readers who like adventure reads. Not only does Riordan keep the plot moving along through 400 pages, he does a good job of balancing the story for new readers and fans of the series. There is enough backstory to keep first-time Riordan readers informed, but not so much that this tale gets bogged down. A solid adventure read, The Serpent's Shadow will have additional appeal to teens who are interested in Egyptian mythology.-Anna Foote. VOYA"

Riordan's Kane Chronicles trilogy concludes with a smash, as Carter and Sadie Kane once again try to save the world from the forces of Chaos. The giant Chaos snake Apophis and his rebel magician allies are on the rise. Luckily, Carter and Sadie Kane are back, ready to fight Apophis and restore Ma'at, the order of the universe. The ghost of an ancient psychotic magician offers help: Find the shadow of Apophis, capture it and use it for an execration spell that will pop the evil god so far into the Duat-the magical realm that coexists with our world-that he will never return. As in the previous volumes-The Red Pyramid (2010) and The Throne of Fire (2011)-the tale is told in the alternating and still-fresh voices of Sadie and Carter. Beyond the explosive action and fireworks, Riordan deftly develops the theme of the duality of the universe-order versus chaos, living a normal life versus risking the extraordinary, being protected by parents versus growing up and stepping out of their shadows. A rousing adventure with plenty of magic and food for thought. Other gods and future stories are hinted at in the conclusion; in the meantime, Riordan's The Kane Chronicles Survival Guide is available to maintain the spell. (glossary, list of gods and goddesses) (Fantasy. 10-14) Kirkus"

Joined by the Egyptian gods who helped them in previous books (The Red Pyramid, rev. 7/10; The Throne of Fire, rev. 9/11) as well as their fellow teen magicians Zia and Walt, Sadie and Carter Kane face the culmination of peril in this third volume in the Kane Chronicles. Apophis, the Serpent of Chaos, is attempting to achieve his legendary goal of swallowing the Sun God, Ra, and destroying all creation. If Sadie and Carter can collect the knowledge and tools they need from journeys to ancient sites in Egypt and the Duat, the Egyptian underworld, they might be able to perform a spell of banishment on him-but they could just as easily burn themselves out in a spell of such power. As they solve puzzles and fight demons, the siblings grow in confidence and ability. Their wry asides and comedic takes on their predicament keep them accessible to their adventure-loving audience, many of whom will enjoy the romantic byplay between Carter and Zia and between Sadie and Walt. Although little is new in this iteration of Riordan's universe, the climax soundly delivers, and the denouement hints at possible future overlap with foreign gods. An epic conclusion
By Dani Shuping
Apophis is rising and chaos is about to destroy the world. And only Carter and Sadie Kane can stop him. But the only ones left to stand with them are the young magicians of Brooklyn House as their allies are being attacked, the House of Life is divided and on the brink of the civil war, and the gods themselves stand apart. To put an end to Apophis they need to find a spell that has been lost for a millennia and the only one that can lead them to it is the ghost of a deadly magician. Can Carter and Sadie do the impossible one last time? Or will the world fall into chaos?

In this third and final book in the Kane trilogy, Riordan once again weaves his magic to create an epic battle and a memorable story. Riordan weaves a tale that will keep the reader on the edge of the seat through the twists and turns that are created, wondering and hoping that all of our heroes survive to do battle one more time. There's plenty of humor, some romance, the return of old friends, and lots of fun twists in this tale. And possibly a hint or two of future adventures to come. It's an epic read and I highly recommend it.

Teaches children history without them knowing it
By Ark1836
I love this entire series...Rick Riordan wrote a great trilogy bringing Ancient Egypt into modern times. As a parent, what I like the best about this series is that my kids learned Egyptian history and mythology without realizing it...sort of like slipping a vitamin into mashed potatoes. The kids ate it up and learned something at the same time. I took my kids to the Field Museum in Chicago shortly after my oldest read this series, and I was amazed at how much she knew...she saw statues and could immediately identify them and tell the basic story about them just because of this series.

Excellent Final Installment to This Series
By A
SPOILER FREE:

My son is now 11 years old and just finishing up 5th grade, and he is an avid Rick Riordan fan. He enjoys the fantasy aspects of the stories, the descriptive passages of the books, the excitement inherent in the extreme time compression (stories take place usually within the course of a week or less), and the humor (take that last one for what it's worth - if you've ever listened in on 11 year old boys and their jokes, you know what I mean about that).

With The Serpent's Shadow, Riordan has made yet another solid contribution to the world of apocalyptic kid lit. As with previous installments in this trilogy, the story is told in the alternating voices and points of view of Carter and Sadie Kane, which can be jarring for kids who are used to books that are written entirely from one character's point of view or from an omniscient narrator's point of view. I think the device works well, once the reader gets used to it, especially since both protagonists are carefully drawn and very consistent in their characterizations. It also allows Riordan to pack a lot more action into his plots, since the reader can be two places at once, and it builds cliffhangers into each character's separate journeys as the reader switches from viewpoint to viewpoint.

Which brings me to my favorite aspects of the books: I enjoy the storytelling almost as much as my son does. But, apart from the fact that the books are well-written, funny, and move along quickly, I love love love the way they hook my son into exploring vocabulary and world history on his own. And I think they are genius at exploiting the opportunities that are available to kids via today's technology. You don't need an e-reader to enjoy reading these books as books - they are wonderful on their own - but if you have an e-reader with a dictionary and a browser, they become completely amazing educational tools.

The day we got this book, my son's teacher had sent home a love note indicating that he was way WAY behind on his dictionary (students were told at the beginning of the year to keep a list of words they learned while reading independently, and my son had about half the number of words his teacher wanted to see by this point in the school year). Enter The Serpent's Shadow and my kindle application. As my son read the book, he was able to highlight new words and words he wasn't sure of and get their definitions straight from the app. He also delved into Egyptian history and mythology as he read, taking time to look up the gods' official stories and compare them with the characters presented in the book. Any book that arouses that kind of curiosity while managing to entertain on the most basic level gets five stars from this mom. With bonus points for tight writing and a well-crafted plot that, for a story about gods, relies surprisingly more on logic and character development than it does on deus ex machina.

There is enough explication in this book to enable the reader to understand what is going on even if he or she has not read the first two books, but I really do recommend starting at the beginning. The series goes fast, and it's well worth reading. I also suggest having research and vocabulary tools available, whether online or in hard copy, because there's a lot of enrichment to be had within these books.
