I'd buy this if it is my first time doing chinese characters.
I'm very glad that they combined the simplified and traditional characters in this revision, as most Chinese content in America is in traditional characters because we have so many people from Taiwan and Hong Kong.

If you are taking the course the first book could be worth the money if you are completely new to character writing.

If you're like me the very idea of a business plan will send you screaming into the hills. That's what makes this book so powerful. It's not about the plan, it's about the process, and Tim Berry has created a way to create what he calls the Lean Business Plan, which really isn't a business plan at all, but a simple, effective, and powerful way to plan for your business and keep you on track.
Unlike so many other books that focus on how to create a full fledged business plan, Tim helps you focus on just the simple things you need and then creates a way for you to track, review, revise, and manage it all. The book is broken down in simple, easy to read chapters that guide you along every step of the way. Whether you are already a big business and want to find a way to simplify that three ring binder of a plan you have on your shelf, or you're just getting started and have heard you need a business plan to be successful, this book is for you. Well worth your time to read.

Great information and easily doable

In any Business 101 course, the first thing you are taught is how important it is to have a business plan. Then you sit down and slog through writing a business plan, and maybe use it to secure funding, or maybe not but the main fact is the business plan is oftentimes seen as something you do and get it over with, and rarely do most people revisit it again. One of my biggest takeaways from the book was the idea of continuously reviewing my business plan on a monthly basis, and doing the PDCA - Plan, Do, Check & Adjust. Great information and easily doable.

As a management professor, I often thought that elaborate long-term business planning was over-rated, and smart, reflective, tactical decision-making was under-rated. I'm so happy to see a book that emphasizes a lean, focused, action-learning approach to developing a plan, executing, reflecting, then adjusting for maximum success. Maybe you need a big elaborate plan for external stakeholders, but Berry's no-nonsense approach is ideal for your management team and internal decision-makers. This book makes a really important contribution.

Zhang, who is a scholar and restorer of antique Chinese furniture, provides a broad introductory view of the literary, historical, aesthetic, social, and economic context in which the furniture was created, and expertly charts specific differences of details in design. At the heart of the book is the furniture itself, from bonsai stands to painting tables and elaborate canopy beds, which have been superbly photographed for this collection, presenting many pieces for the first time in publication. In addition, detailed drawings provide an intimate look at the ingenuity of many of the pieces. Classical Chinese Furniture from Weiyang is the first book to look exclusively at furniture from this region and will be essential for collectors and scholars with an interest in this vital time and place in Chinese art history.

Vice Admiral William Bligh, FRS, RN (9 September 1754 – 7 December 1817) was an officer of the British Royal Navy and a colonial administrator. About the Author
Kevin Rodgers started his career as a trader with Merrill Lynch before joining another American bank, Bankers Trust. From there he went on to work as a managing director of Deutsche Bank for 15 years and latterly as global head of foreign exchange.

An entertaining contribution to the recent history of banking

Like the very best books, this works on multiple levels. It's an entertaining read that would not be out of place in a selection of books to take on a long flight or a holiday. It is also a great account of the recent history of banking from an insider with a perch on what was one of the fastest growing franchises in the industry, and is now used more frequently as a cautionary tale.
But the book is far more than that, it has some great insights into what went wrong during the financial crisis, and makes an excellent suggestion on how to make banking safer, although there will be the inevitable question of who polices the policepersons.
But perhaps where the book adds the most value is as an example of how technology seemed to create new jobs in an industry, and then becomes a tool that rapidly hollows out employment. For those of us that worry about AI and robotics leading to a dystopia of structural and permanent unemployment on a scale never seen before, there is no better place to look for clues as to what can happen than in the markets business, and Kevin has written a wonderful book on the topic.

The reviews so far cover a great deal of the details of this fine book and I agree with most everything in them. It's an enjoyable romp through an illustrious career on the trading desk of a major bank. The witticisms are spot on and the illustrations of some of the practices unique to a trading desk will make this an enjoyable read for both the layman and the market professional alike.
Whichever you are, the premise that the advent and subsequent proliferation of ever greater computing power put in place a situation where our technological capabilities greatly surpassed the level of thought given to the ramifications of the same makes for a fascinating read.
As we barrel into the 21st century, with all of the technological innovations just as new to us now as accessible supercomputing was to them 25 years ago, the thoughtful reader can give pause and look to other fields which could benefit from the insights of this book.

This book is a true insider's account on the FX trading business in investment banks. While most books on banking tends to bash the industry, this book provides a more neutral view; and yet; every word strikes a chord with readers who are from the finance industry. This book is both entertaining and insightful.

Kevin's account on his 25 years provided a vivid description of how banking has evolved, but what attracted me to this book is certainly his insights on how technology is reshaping this industry. Without giving too much away, this book touches on some of the following topics:
- demise of spot brokers due to computerization
- how the 2008 Financial Crisis was directly (or indirectly) created by technology
- over-reliance of mathematical models by traders and risk managers etc.

This book is a must-read for people who are interested to understand how banking and technology evolved.

If this is your first time buying the book then it's a great read. But for me, a waste of money. I have the 6th Edition and expected this new one to have new info. IT DOESN'T!!!!! Same book, different cover.

Rehashed nonsense to make a new edition

I had to read this for a supervisors exam, it reminds me of a college student who has a one page paper that he has to make fill a 10 page paper. Why use one paragraph when you can take 5 pages to get a simple concept accross. Its 90 % common sense ideas, dont expect to learn anything. If you have to read it just read the single page summary at the end of each chapter.

About the Author

Lars Kroijer was the CEO of Holte Capital Ltd, a London-based special situations hedge fund which he founded in 2002 before returning external capital in the spring of 2008. Prior to establishing Holte Capital, Lars served in the London office of HBK Investments. In addition, he previously worked at SC Fundamental and the investment banking division of Lazard Freres in New York. Lars graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard University and received a MBA from Harvard Business School.

Honest and straightforward book detailing the entire life-cycle of a hedge fund

Interesting book describing Lars' journey from a tiny start-up fund struggling to cover overhead expenses and attract assets, to a successful portfolio manager watching over hundreds of millions in investor capital. Lars does a great job reflecting on his struggles and pitfalls, telling readers exactly how he felt as the events unfolded. That said, his investment style differentiates from mine in nearly all aspects so I did not get as much out of this book as many others I've read. But Lars' ability and knowledge on the subject is on par with the best in the business, therefore I would recommend this book to anyone interested in in-depth financial statement analysis and arbitrage trading,

A great read

I stumbled across this book while browsing Amazon. I chose this book over other hedge fund / high finance books because I have also formed a hedge fund of the same strategy (market neutral) as Kroijer's Holte Capital. I am also attempting to go at it solo, and Kroijer started Holte with just himself, a CFO, and maybe another analyst. I was also very familiar with one of Kroijer's previous employers. I was hoping to compare my experiences with his and also perhaps glean some insights I had not considered.

To the former point, I thought Kroijer presented an exceptionally accurate portrayal of the formation (and ensuing frustration) of a fund. I read some passages about raising capital aloud to my wife, who then said, "That's what YOU"VE said many times!" It was almost therapeutic to know someone as ultimately successful as Kroijer also struggled at the outset.

To the latter point, I was always troubled about what would happen if and when I raised a relatively small amount of capital but took to amortizing my fund costs over the 60 months as the fund docs dictate. Kroijer had this exact experience and explained how he addressed it, and it was something I hadn't really considered but now have it in the back of my mind if and when the time comes.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants an accurate depiction of the highs and lows of the full life cycle of a hedge fund. It is not the highly glamorized Hollywood-esque exploits of "The Wolf of Wall Street (another good book, so I am not panning that in anyway), but I mention this as a plus for "Money Mavericks." The media often puts its own agenda on the table when "reporting" about hedge funds, and as a result the public often has the wrong idea. This book sets the record straight more than any media outlet ever will.

Honest and insightful

Extremely honest and frank overview for what to me had been a vague and poorly understood industry. Mr Kroijer did a good job in explaining this.

I also enjoyed his experience of starting a business and the initial difficulties he faced. This will resonate to a lot of entrepreneurs.

I read his other book on investing and I can see where the ideas for that book germinated. His emphasis on low costs, ETFs and so on are good to read again.

I'm practically the same age as Mr Kroijer. It's kind of depressing that he has achieved so much, and has such talent. He comes across as a nice chap though whom you could have a decent chat with over a pint, not like a lot of the finance types you see swaggering around.
