Review
Praise for Rachel E. Carter's USA Today bestselling The Black Mage series:
"It takes a lot for me to truly fall in love with a book. I think I maybe do this once or twice a year. This is one of those times. I found a new fantasy story that sucked me in (completely). Imagine my surprise that it was YA too. Y'all know me. Normally, I go for the NA and above reads. But this series...it just has that something "extra". That extra punch that drags you in and won't let go. I hope you give it a try. It's THAT good." - Scarlett Dawn, NYT & USA Today bestselling author of Forever Evermore
"A magical academy where potential mages train and study all things magic, a love-hate relationship with an arrogant prince, and a determined and unyielding female heroine? Sign me up." - Raisa Santos - TheFandom.Net
"Falling somewhere between the magic of Hogwarts and the excitement of Hunger Games, this story resides in the niche rather nicely!" - Margaret Faria - InD'Tale Magazine
"This has undoubtedly become one of my favorite YA fantasy series. Hands down, no competition." -Melissa, EverSoMela, top Goodreads reviewer
"Rachel E. Carter has a definite fan in me forever, keep doing what you're doing Rachel because you write an amazing story!" -Emmeline, The Book Herald, top Amazon reviewer

Epic Conclusion
By TKV
Yes, Last Stand is darker than the first three books, but it's that darkness that makes the story and characters so much more real. Last Stand is about war and betrayal and secrets, so there's not a lot of room for sunshine and rainbows. Though there are some lighthearted moments, most of the book put me through an emotional wringer (in the best way possible). This is one of the best series conclusions I've read in a long time and it's a story that will stay with me long after the final page.

A rollercoaster ride you didn't know you needed to be on until it's too late!
By David Maldonado
Last Stand is the final installment in Carter's The Black Mage series and it changes everything! It has some of the most brutally raw scenes I've ever come across. At times, I found myself having to stop to gain my own bearings. Carter's prose leap you into her world and make you feel everything her protagonists are feeling. I was fortunate to receive an eARC (digital advanced reader's copy) in exchange for an honest review. Here are my immediate impressions without spoilers.
Ryiah's struggle has reached new heights in Last Stand. More often than not, she's forced to face everything she has ever feared and more. I felt every loss. Every triumph. Every injury. Every kiss. It put all of my senses into overdrive. Carter takes risks, one a Young Adult author doesn't often traverse. I commend her bravery for both taking that risk professionally, and also allowing her characters to go there. She didn't hold anything back when it came to Ryiah's struggle and I can appreciate that tremendously.
Ryiah's growth as an individual throughout each book has been tremendous, Last Stand being no different. We last left off with Ryiah becoming Darren's wife, Jerar's princess, thus losing the coveted position of Black Mage to Darren. For quite some time it was a hard blow for Ryiah, considering the many years she fought so hard to get to this point. Meanwhile, Darren is thrust into this intense position of Black Mage under his older brother Blayne's rule. We see the choices Darren is forced to make, sometimes pitting him against Ryiah directly. While both make unfathomable mistakes that bring about harsh consequence, both for each other and for the nation of Jerar, their revelations have an everlasting affect.
Politics has always been a strong element in The Black Mage series, however Last Stand cranks it up several notches, as it does in all aspects, and we truly see what it means to lead, and what it means to follow. We get to see how each position of power truly works, and are forced to see the ramifications of war. While a lot of YA authors skirt around the real issues, Carter takes the plunge into deep and dark territory. Carter did not hold any quips about staying true to each situation. She didn't cater to her fans as some authors do. She made the hard choices for her characters, and lead them down a path that turned out to be fitting in the end for each individual. An author that takes those risks, generously reaps the rewards.
The world of Jerar has never felt more real to me. Ryiah, Darren, Alex, Ella, Ian, and Paige have never felt more like friends to me. The journey through Last Stand and in the series has been one that I will always cherish. I'm greatful for those tough, sticky moments Ryiah and Darren were in, and for each calculated risk that they took. Most of the book is about Ryiah finding her way back to Darren in light of this huge secret she must keep from him. Secrets often fester and rot, and we see how their relationship becomes overly strenuous. Rachel Carter kept it refreshing enough where I wasn't able to predict what would happen next. Every time I would think I had it all figured out, she surprised me every time. Who doesn't love a good thrill ride?
The Black Mage Last Stand is a terrifying ride you didn't know you needed to get on until it's too late. Once on it, you are hard pressed to be disappointed. The violence, characterization, and plot twists have forever imprinted itself in my mind. It was every bit as real to me as it was for Ryiah and Darren.

Full of suprises - Dark - Fast - Complex
By Melissa A. Crockett
I finished this series last week and I'm still riding the high. I've read 100s of books and lots of genres - though magic is my favorite. I can't even bring myself to start another book because I don't want to wash away this books lasting impressions. I'm going to first say: READ THE WHOLE SERIES!!! Now I'll review based on after readings books 1-3. This last book is a giant crescendo!!! My emotions were all over the place! I wanted to cry at every moment! The author has done a wonderful job of pulling me into these characters lives & wanting to believe in them. Just writing this review is making me feel nostalgic. This is supposed to be YA, I'm guessing that because there's no heavy sexual content - but there is some brutality and I would say you need to be over 15 to read it. The first book starts off innocent enough and has a bit of a Harry Potter feel but this isn't childs play. This isn't about an academy and students being heroes. There's a much bigger picture and more lives at stake than just the main characters. I could go on and on but I'm not. One of my top 10 series!!!! Along with: Divergent (minus the last book, terrible writing) Hunger Games, Sword of Truth, Dresden Files, Kingfountain Series, & The Elemental Series.
