The Oresteia: Agamemnon; The Libation Bearers; The Eumenides, by Aeschylus

In the Oresteia Aeschylus addressed the bloody chain of murder and revenge within the royal family of Argos. As they move from darkness to light, from rage to self-governance, from primitive ritual to civilized institution, their spirit of struggle and regeneration becomes an everlasting song of celebration. In Agamemnon, a king's decision to sacrifice his daughter and turn the tide of war inflicts lasting damage on his family, culminating in a terrible act of retribution; The Libation Bearers deals with the aftermath of Clytemnestra's regicide, as her son Orestes sets out to avenge his father's death; and in The Eumenides, Orestes is tormented by supernatural powers that can never be appeased. Forming an elegant and subtle discourse on the emergence of Athenian democracy out of a period of chaos and destruction, The Oresteia is a compelling tragedy of the tensions between our obligations to our families and the laws that bind us together as a society.

The only trilogy in Greek drama that survives from antiquity, Aeschylus' The Oresteia is translated by Robert Fagles with an introduction, notes and glossary written in collaboration with W.B. Stanford in Penguin Classics.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. As a great classic 'The Oresteia' by Aeschylus merits a full 5 stars. I will, however, question Aeschylus logic and motive in creating this play. Aeschylus was an Athenian who participated in the war with Persia and stated that he fought in the battle on the plain of Marathon. He is a patriot who promotes the glory and happy existence of Athens, the City of Athena.

At the same time, the basic concept for this play is drawn from the Odyssey. In Homer's great work Odysseus [Ulysses] learns that Agammemnon, following the destruction of Troy, manages to successfully get home to Mycenae. He arrives with much loot and with his sexual slave, Cassandra, recently princess of Troy. Agammemnon receives quite a homecoming. He and Cassandra are slaughtered by Agammemnon's wife, Clytaemnestra, and her lover, Aegisthus. The motive for the killings are apparently multiple. Clytaemnestra is quite understandably outraged that Agammemnon, immediately prior to sailing away to Troy, sacrificed their daughter, Iphigeneia, for favorable winds. Clytaemnestra, perhaps in revenge, takes a lover and, along with him, plots Agammemnon's death. When Agammemnon actually does arrive, another motive arrives in the form of helpless Cassandra. Paradoxically, Clytaemnestra seems to be jealous. Another stated motive is power. Both Aegisthus and Clytemnestra supposedly want to be King and Queen of Mycenae--BUT--Clytemnestra is already Queen so this can't be her motive.

She and her lover, Aegisthus, do both Agammemnon and Cassandra to death. Clytaemnestra's son by Agammemnon, Orestes, complicit with his sister, Electra, and egged on by the God, Apollo, kill both mother and lover.

These are the bare bones of the story as told to Odysseus. Aeschylus, himself, can't deviate from the 'facts' as delivered in the Odyssey because virtually everyone in the Greek World knows the story by heart. Aeschylus, quite aware of the complexities and ironies of the situation, decides to use the story for his own purposes but it is a bit of a stretch. Interestingly, In Aeschylus' Play, Clytaemnestra facing death at the hands of her own son and arguing for her life, never once uses her strongest argument i.e. that Agammemnon had slaughtered Iphigeneia, Orestes' own sister. Later, when guilt-plagued [Furies-attacked] Orestes is tried for matricide in a trial presided over by Athena--including 10 wise Athenian judges--the prosecuting Furies don't once use their strongest prosecutorial point which is, again, Agammemnon's sacrifice of Iphigeneia.

Instead, Apollo, working for the defense, says that he ordered/influenced Orestes to perform the act, therefore Orestes is innocent. Athena, who'd showed marked preference for the Greeks led by Agammemnon on the Plains of Troy, throws in her vote in favor of Orestes which apparently creates a 50-50 split, which by Athenian Law means that Orestes is freed of the Furies curse. This may be a minor point but with Athena acting as an 11th Juror there can be no 50-50 split. The play ends with Athena convincing the Furies to be 'good' and to bring only happiness to Athens. There is a lyrical paen to the benefit of glorious Athens.

Several problems: There is a 50-50 split, therefore half of the judges regard Orestes as a criminal and matricide. An extension of this is that these jurors recognize the specious nature of the defense argument. Also, Cassandra, one of the more symphathetic figures of the Trojan War and, arguably, the most sympathetic figure of this play, is also murdered. Cassandra is entirely guiltless of any crime yet her murder is never laid at Clytaemnestra's feet. Apparently the murder of a slave, even a slave of Blood Royal, isn't regarded as much of a crime. Agammemnon, however, actually is guilty of a 'crime' against Clytaemnestra by sacrificing their daughter. On the other hand, Agammemnon's defense must surely be that it was a necessary sacrifice to the benefit of the Gods and the Gods, themselves, would probably praise rather than condemn Agammemnon for this otherwise loathesome act. At the same time, Clytaemnestra does loathe Agammemnon for it and this hatred likely directs her hand. This fact is lightly skimmed over in the play. In a sense, Orestes is not only a matricide but, in killing his mother, is indirectly complicit in his own sister's sacrifice. All this is skimmed over although neither Aeschylus nor his audience can be ignorant of these facts.

I'll repeat. The major crime committed here is the murder of Cassandra, not Agammemnon or Clytemnestra. Either because of custom or because facts can be inconvenient, Aeschylus glosses over this almost entirely.

In this light, 'The Orestia', for all its strength and beauty, becomes no more than a vehicle for Athenian propaganda. It wasn't enough. Fifty years later Athens was occupied by triumphant Spartans.

Classic for Good Reasons
By jdl
The parameters of a standard mystery novel review simply do not fit. Aeschylus has been a classic for well over 2500 years. There are good reasons. "The Libation Bearers", while less well-known than "Agamemnon" is filled with the same significance and intent; and is a necessary link to "The Eumenides" with its wonderfully satisfying ending.

Great read!
By A. Nash
This is actually a really good read! I got this for a college assignment so I expected it to be somewhat boring but it really held my interest. The actual scene part of the book is a bit hard to understand but they give a translated story version at the beginning that really clears up any confusion.

The gold standard of vocabulary books.
By P. P. Clem
I collect books in this genre in the off-chance somebody will come up with something worthwhile I find to be new or challenging.
This book is the best of its kind I've found.
Some vocabulary books begin with the assumption that you are 13 years-old and you may have some gaps in your vocabulary.
Some claim 3,000 words and add in myrmidon, terpsichorean, sciamachy, and susirrus none of which you'll ever hear or have occasion to use.
This book includes over 1,100 worthwhile words every adult should know and put to good use.

Pure pusillanimous pleasure...
By Daniel Myers
Now, for Mr. Bly to put out a tome reflecting how to actually improve or at least sound like you had improved your educational achievements vis a vis your audibly visible vocabulary is a short effort, given his regular prodigy at all this "schtuff".

That he's extended opinion to 1200 of his favorite culprits is additionally laudatory, since over-cranked tech educations will often not even provide the necessary fast perusal of all things written, and is therefore Most Appreciated.

Finally a godsend to parents -- at least of boys -- that create a perfect, written down "wage against the machine" guideline from which to bet, cajole, plead, embarass, objectivize and one's male offspring.
If you can't make a good daily or weekly wager from this material, they oughta make sure you never get to land in Vegas again.

Just think, at a $1 or more per word, your children may get out of a public school education with minimal cost... they [and you, too, let's be sure...] will slide through english and all sorts of the other reasonably language-oriented courses for years -- the novelty of being an intellectual stud will carry them onto "real" pedagogic wonders... all for $20. Don't miss it....! :)

I am definitely one of "those people" who enjoy reading dictionaries
By NoneYa
I am definitely one of "those people" who enjoy reading dictionaries. Well, maybe not dictionaries per se, but books that help me expand my vocabulary.

I have older brothers and loved to trick me with wordplay back in the day. Two still try to do it, but they have to do something to try and make themselves feel superior...which usually means working hard at making others feel inferior. So it was a matter of self-preservation growing up.

Now it is nice to be able to turn a phrase in an unusual way...not to make anyone feel uneducated, but rather to keep my mind fresh.

This is a nice quick resource to choose from. While dictionary.com and thesaurus.com is undoubtedly more in depth, when working away from the web, having a resource like this is useful.

does NOT include answer key
By theflyant
This books is actually one of the better foreign language books I've used.

But please note: this book does NOT contain the answer key for the activities.

The "partial edition" that only covers the first couple chapters DOES include the answer key in the back.

So if your school/university bookstore offers the partial edition(I can't find it on Amazon), take that into consideration.

***I have contacted the publisher, and they were willing to send me an answer key. So this might be an option for you as well.***

This book was great, as it should have been since I bought it brand new. HOWEVER, this book does not come with the access code. Which is absolutely absurd. If I buy something brand new, it should come with the code. And if it is not going to come with the code, advertise that better, so people understand what they are really buying.

I ordered this exact book, seventh edition, for my college spanish class and received the sixth edition with no book code, meaning I had no way of completing my work online to submit for the class.

Cells in the body require voltage to work and to make new cells to replace worn out cells. Our muscles are rechargeable batteries that provide this voltage. Each organ has its own battery pack. Such battery packs are specific stacks of muscles. These muscle stacks are known as acupuncture meridians.

About the Author
Jerry Tennant, MD, MD(H), PScD is an awarded ophthalmologist that performed most of the research for the company VISX to get approval for its laser that is used in LASIK surgery. In the process, he inhaled viruses released by the laser and developed encephalitis. Traditional medicine had no cure so he began to look for ways to cure himself. This led him to understand the role of voltage in the body. By restoring the voltage in his brain, he recovered. He has shared the methods for recovery from chronic diseases by restoring voltage in his series of books Healing is Voltage. This book shows that acupuncture meridians are actually stacks of muscle batteries that provide the voltage for each organ to function and to keep organs repaired.

There truly is no other book like it
By JohnSays
I have a rather full library of books on health as I have sought to understand a physical problem i have suffered for 10 years that is now finally resolving. In my journey few books have had as much real solid information as this one. I congratulate the author, not only for a well written book, but for the immense about of original research reported to us. Dr. Tennant has defined and codified the use of electricity in the body. He has mapped the "wiring" to all body parts and has provided a system of treatment to the reader that can restore health. He has unified the flows of acupuncture, the chakras and the nervous system. There truly is no other book like it.

The book is now in it's third iteration. Much was added between the 2nd and 3rd publishing. For example the chapter on fulvic acid.

I will state that I have been using an electrical energy device for about 3 years, and if I had not had it, I would hate to contemplate the condition I would be in without it. No, it is not the Biomodulator (his energy device) and I do not mention what it is because I do not want to taint or take away from this review by directing attention elsewhere. The point is, the use of electrons and frequency are vital elements of healing and living fully. Dr. Tennant had gifted us with a treasure in this book. Anyone who wants to understand the use of electrons and frequency in the body will not be disappointed.

Your body is an electrical system
By Enlighten me
Great insight work by Tennant in joining the dots to understand and perform acupuncture from an electro magnetic perspective. A must read and a suitable companion book to "The Body Electric: Electromagnetism And The Foundation Of Life" by Robert Becker and Gary Selden.

Ancient Futures: Learning from Ladakh, by Helena Norberg-Hodge

The swiftly evolving socioeconomic life of Ladakh, whose people struggle to balance growth and technology with cultural values, offers crucial lessons in sustainable development. This gripping portrait of the western Himalayan land known as “Little Tibet” moves from the author’s first visit to idyllic, nonindustrial Ladakh in 1974 to the present, tracking profound changes as the region was opened to foreign tourists, Western goods and technologies, and pressures for economic growth. These changes in turn brought generational conflict, unemployment, inflation, environmental damage, and threats to the traditional way of life.
Appalled by these negative impacts, the author helped establish the Ladakh Project (later renamed the International Society for Ecology and Culture) to seek sustainable solutions that preserve cultural integrity and environmental health, while addressing the Ladakhis’ hunger for modernization. This model undertaking effectively combines educational programs for all social levels with the design, demonstration, and promotion of appropriate technologies such as solar heating and small-scale hydro power.
Examining how modernization changes the way people live and think, Norberg-Hodge challenges us to redefine our concepts of “development” and “progress.” Above all, Ancient Futures stresses the need to carry traditional wisdom into the future—our urgent task as a global community.

From Library Journal
Norberg-Hodge first went to Ladakh in 1975 and has spent six months there every year since. This slim volume is her soapbox to air her views of how Ladakh should be. Part 1 is the romantic, idealized Shangri-la where everyone is happy and contented. Then she portrays Ladakh after the tourist invasions and economic development. Next is a tirade against multinational corporations that are responsible for all the world's problems (strange, since India banned most international companies 20 years ago). Finally, Norberg-Hodge describes her work in establishing local organizations to introduce local-level, low-capital inputs. A popular and sensitive introduction to Ladakh is needed, but this is not it. Not recommended.

"The celebration here of traditional Ladakhi life induces exhilaration but also sadness, as if some half-remembered paradise known in another life had now been lost. So evocative is it that I felt -- I'm not sure what -- homesickness?"

Informative & Interesting
By The Purple Bee
I read this book before going to Ladakh in 2007 & found it to have been informative & it made me seek out projects that were working well.
It was a success story of saving the environments, the landscape, teaching the local people & developing projects.
I really hope these projects are in effect as I write. The author & these programs may have learned from the damage which has been done to Nepal & tourism. Ladakh was opened to outsiders later than Nepal. It had not become like Bhutan which is so exclusive, it has changed the people in another way. Only the rich can afford to visit Bhutan and they haven't treated the Nepalese who lived in Bhutan, badly, while being so holy about "their" land and country.
Recommend the book.

Where it's really at in Ladakh--and here
By JS Philomel
I have been to Ladakh a couple of times, staying in monasteries and in local houses. This book gives an excellent deep-level description of the very special culture there, explaining why it is so very attractive, why it is severely under threat, and why we should care. Although sometimes it's a bit over the top in the analysis of the ills of Western capitalism, every argument is well-reasoned and carefully presented. Highly recommended for people who care about the future of our own society, and of our planet.

Logically Fallacious: The Ultimate Collection of Over 300 Logical Fallacies (Academic Edition), by Bo Bennett

This book is a crash course in effective reasoning, meant to catapult you into a world where you start to see things how they really are, not how you think they are. The focus of this book is on logical fallacies, which loosely defined, are simply errors in reasoning. With the reading of each page, you can make significant improvements in the way you reason and make decisions. "Expose an irrational belief, keep a man rational for a day. Expose irrational thinking, and keep a man rational for a lifetime." - Bo Bennett

Remedy for the stupor of muddled thinking!
By Dave Diller
This book is a tremendously valuable self-improvement resource for clear thinking.

I have the Kindle and iTunes versions of this book. They both operate flawlessly. A helpful feature contained in these electronic versions is the addition of hyperlinks embedded within the text which allows the reader to move to other relevant areas of interest.

As a reader, I expect a book on logic to be organized "logically." This book passes with a five stars here. The free sample download includes the first 13 "alphabetized" fallacies which gives a good sense of the scope of the book. The author's format is: name each fallacy, describe it, represent its "logical form," give examples of the fallacy, and discuss exceptions to the rule, tips and variations. Downloading the sample will help you decide whether or not to ultimately purchase the book.

Many of the examples are hysterically funny. Warning to the reader: you need to be in fairly good health to read this book, as the humor is literally gut-busting and side-splitting. The humorous examples are in and of themselves worth purchase.

The often deceptive and manipulative arguments, reasoning and tactics of salesmen, talking head pundits, opinion writers and political and religious demagogues are readily seen for what they are after reading this book. Looking inwardly, I can better identify my own areas of fallacious thinking.

Some of the other Amazon reviews of this book surmise that "faith-based" people will find the religious examples offensive. Perhaps. I think we all have mental blind spots no matter what religious or irreligious beliefs we hold. The author uses many examples that include "common creationist arguments". He says "let me be clear, maybe the universe is just 6000 years old. For the purpose of the book, it doesn't matter. Fallacies are not necessarily about the truth of the argument; they are more about the form of the argument."

Good reference but with some weak points
By Sascha
The good first: it's definitely a great reference of different logical fallacies and I can warmly recommend it to anyone interested in logic and/or rhetoric who will surely get to use it regularly (and that alone makes it well worth the money).

There are some minor omissions and errors, but they shouldn't bother too much. The author's attempts in jokes are also a matter of taste (the book could do well without some of the toilet humour, but some of other jokes are quite funny really). What matters is the content, and this is definitely a great reference work.

The biggest problem I find is that there is no structure or even useful sorting order in the book. Clearly, some fallacies are related to others, or are even special cases or variations of others. Instead of grouping them together, the author chose to sort all of them *alphabetically* (if you know that many if not most of them start with "Argument to ..." you can guess how it looks like).

Moreover, there are also no cross-references that would link the fallacies together (just a "See also" section would already help a lot).

If anything, that at least makes a case for the Kindle edition. This book really gains from a good search function. It's also significantly cheaper...

Great book
By Dustin
Great book, fun to read. I like the definition/example style (it's more like a reference book than a straight read).

If you're interested in debate, and logical constructors in arguments this is a definite buy.

On a personal note, don't learn the fallacies by name and then point them out "that's a strawman argument!" "that's ad hominem!". Use the weakness in those types of arguments to defeat them with logic, not definition (which is a fallacy of it's own).

Review
"Retaining the majesty of language with the clarity of thought, the English Standard Version is a grand accomplishment." Dr. Ravi Zacharias, Author and Speaker "The ESV is the text I have been waiting for my entire life. I appreciate greatly both its fluency of language and its lucidity of expression, thanks to the brilliant work of the translation team. We owe them a very great debt." Rev. Ranald Macaulay, Christian Heritage, The Round Church, Cambridge "After preaching out of the same version for over 10 years, I switched to the ESV Bible. I find it both accurate and easily readable, which is a rare combination." Francis Chan, Author of Crazy Love "I thank God for the ESV. It combines up-to-date accuracy in the text and absolute faithfulness to the words of Scripture with a literary skill and beauty in the translation which, in my judgment, is unsurpassed." Eric J. Alexander, Retired Pastor, St. George's-Tron Parish Church, Scotland "At last a translation that majors on accuracy, combined with a modern, fluent style. I am confident that in time the ESV will become the standard translation for the English-speaking world." The Rt. Rev. Wallace Benn, Bishop of Lewes, England

Review

"The ESV is a dream come true for me. The rightful heir to a great line of historic translations, it provides the continuity and modern accuracy I longed for. Now the scope and theological faithfulness of the ESV Study Bible study notes is breathtaking. Oh how precious is the written Word of God."
—John Piper, Founder, desiringGod.org; Chancellor, Bethlehem College & Seminary

"The definitive clarity and beauty of the ESV Study Bible is extraordinary. In a world where words are distorted to mean anything, it is wonderful to have complete confidence in the reliability and truth of the Bible—so clearly and persuasively demonstrated by this world-class team of Bible scholars and teachers. For everyone who wants to understand God’s Word in a deeper way, the ESV Study Bible is an outstanding resource. I will be an avid user!"
—Joni Eareckson Tada, founder and CEO, Joni and Friends International Disability Center; author, A Spectacle of Glory and Beside Bethesda

"Outstanding! The ESV Study Bible is a treasure—a beautiful volume, filled with a wealth of resources. It will be just as useful for the seminarian and long-time pastor as it will be accessible to the brand-new Christian."
—R. Albert Mohler Jr., President and Joseph Emerson Brown Professor of Christian Theology, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

"The ESV Study Bible is an invaluable and inexhaustible resource—for those who already know and treasure God’s Word, as well as for the new generation of Bible students who have yet to discover the wonder and wealth of Scripture. I especially love the way the notes and articles highlight the great redemptive story and ‘connect the dots’ between the various portions and themes of Scripture. Full of rich insight, scholarly yet accessible—I am deeply grateful for this magnificent work."
—Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth, author; Host, Revive Our Hearts

"I was privileged to act as General Editor of the English Standard Version, and now that I look back on what we did in producing that version, I find myself suspecting very strongly that this was the most important thing that I have ever done for the Kingdom, and that the product of our labors is perhaps the biggest milestone in Bible translation in certainly the last half century at least, and perhaps more. And now, as Theological Editor of the ESV Study Bible, I believe that the work we have done together on this project has set an altogether new standard in study Bibles."
—J. I. Packer, Board of Governors' Professor of Theology, Regent College

"The ESV Study Bible is a tour de force: innovative production, beautiful graphics, and notes by outstanding scholars packed with useful information."
—Mark Dever, pastor, Capitol Hill Baptist Church, Washington, DC; president, 9Marks

"This is surely the most comprehensive study Bible yet! Serious students of the Bible will find this an invaluable aid to understanding the text, the background, and some key theological issues of the Bible. In addition to the reliable ESV text with notes, it has resources that no teacher or preacher should be without. Beautifully produced and accessible, it will also make a great gift for new Christians."
—Graeme Goldsworthy, former lecturer in Old Testament, biblical theology, and hermeneutics, Moore Theological College

A Detailed Comparison with the NIV Zondervan Study Bible - Both Superb!
By Dwight Gingrich
The ESV Study Bible (ESVSB) now has a sturdy new "competitor" in the NIV Zondervan Study Bible (NIVZSB). How do they stack up against each other?

In this review I will note similarities between the two, describe some differences, and survey their approach to 10 controversial topics/texts. (For a much fuller version of this review, covering more topics/texts, visit my website by searching for "Dwight Gingrich" and "NIV Zondervan Study Bible.")

SIMILARITIES:

Both are massive works, first (NIVZSB) and second (ESVSB) in length among major evangelical study Bibles. Both stand firmly within the conservative evangelical tradition. Both are scholarly works with general editors bearing PhDs from the University of Cambridge—Wayne Grudem for the ESVSB and D. A. Carson for the NIVZSB. My incomplete manual comparison of the contributors to the two study Bibles revealed at least 9 people who contributed to both.

Both affirm traditional authorship for contested books such as the Pentateuch (Moses with minor editorial shaping), Isaiah (Isaiah), Matthew (the apostle Matthew), the Pastoral Epistles (Paul), and 2 Peter (the apostle Peter).

There are even typographical similarities: both volumes print the sacred text in a single column on each page, with cross references along the outside margins, and with commentary in double columns beneath.

Indeed, these two study Bibles are similar enough that the main factor that should influence your choice between the two is your preference in translations.

DIFFERENCES:

It appears to me that the ESVSB is somewhat stronger than the NIVZSB in these areas: Charts, maps, illustrations, historical information, and general apologetic or bibliological articles. The ESVSB, for example, has separate articles devoted to archeological topics, biblical languages, biblical doctrine, biblical ethics, and the perspectives that various denominations, religions, and cults bring to Scripture.

A comparison of the introductions to Exodus shows that the one in the ESVSB is slightly longer (six pages to the NIVZSB’s five), with more attention given to the historical reliability of the book and to its literary features. Similarly, the NIVZSB introduction for Galatians is three pages long, while the ESVSB’s covers four pages, providing a little more historical data, a superior map, and more space devoted to charts rather than photographs.

The differences, I stress, are differences of degree. The similarities here outweigh the differences, but I give the ESVSB the blue ribbon for visual helps and breadth of topics addressed in articles.

The NIVZSB is stronger in at least one way: its emphasis on biblical theology. This makes sense, given the editors of the two volumes: Wayne Grudem’s most significant authorial effort is his massive and massively popular Systematic Theology, while D. A. Carson is better known for both his commentaries and his editorial work in books such as the Commentary on the New Testament Use of the Old Testament and the series New Studies in Biblical Theology.

The NIVZSB’s focus on biblical theology is most evident in the twenty-eight articles found before the concordance. Most articles are two or three pages long; together they cover sixty-six pages. Since these articles are the most unique part of this new study Bible, I will list them here, with their authors:

The Story of the Bible: How the Good News About Jesus Is Central – Timothy Keller
The Bible and Theology – D. A. Carson
A Biblical-Theological Overview of the Bible – D. A. Carson
The Glory of God – James M. Hamilton Jr.
Creation – Henri A. G. Blocher
Sin – Kevin DeYoung
Covenant – Paul R. Williamson
Law – T. D. Alexander
Temple – T. D. Alexander
Priest – Dana M. Harris
Sacrifice – Jay A. Sklar
Exile and Exodus – Thomas Richard Wood
The Kingdom of God – T. D. Alexander
Sonship – D. A. Carson
The City of God – T. D. Alexander
Prophets and Prophecy – Sam Storms
Death and Resurrection – Philip S. Johnston
People of God – Moisés Silva
Wisdom – Daniel J. Estes
Holiness – Andrew David Naselli
Justice – Brian S. Rosner
Wrath – Christopher W. Morgan
Love and Grace – Graham A. Cole
The Gospel – Greg D. Gilbert
Worship – David G. Peterson
Mission – Andreas J. Köstenberger
Shalom – Timothy Keller
The Consummation – Douglas J. Moo

While I disagree with minor points in some of these articles, I find myself agreeing with a much higher percentage of what is said here than with what is said in most systematic theologies. That is the benefit of staying closer to the language of Scripture itself. Most of these articles are very useful and some (such as Keller’s opening one) are even moving. I have a niggling question about the place of such essays in a study Bible (how many readers will really find and benefit from this content in their specific moments of exegetical need?), but reading them can certainly make one a better reader of Scripture.

CONTROVERSIAL TOPICS/TEXTS:

On the central matters of the gospel, both study Bibles are solid. They promote the core gospel message well, along with the necessary human response to God’s grace. And, though both are generally Calvinistic throughout, they do not emphasize this interpretive lens in a way that overshadows the biblical message itself. Well done.

But how does they handle more controversial passages—texts which theologically conservative Christians sometimes disagree about? And how does the NIVZSB compare to the ESVSB in its handling of these texts?

Creation: These study Bibles hold similar positions here: (1) On "days": The ESVSB presents five readings that “faithful interpreters” offer regarding the days of creation but refrains from assessing them. The NIVZSB says the mention of “days” “emphasizes the logical development of God’s creation more than it pinpoints the chronological development” (p. 20). (2) On "kinds": Both suggest this is a general term that (so they imply) leaves the door open for theistic evolution. (3) Both affirm that Adam and Eve were historical persons.

Divorce and Remarriage: Both study Bibles underscore at Matthew 5:31-32 and Matthew 19:1-12 that “Jesus is reaffirming God’s original intention that marriage be permanent and lifelong” (NIVZSB, p. 1970). They teach that both divorce and remarriage are “possible but never ideal” (NIVZSB, p. 1969) in cases where one marriage partner engages in “sexual immorality” (Matt. 5:32; 19:9). It seems that the NIVZSB may interpret “sexual immorality” slightly more broadly, saying that the Greek term “porneia [is] the broadest term for sexual sin. It refers to sexual relations with any other person besides one’s monogamous heterosexual spouse” (p. 1939). The ESVSB, rather than speaking of “sexual relations,” specifies “sexual intercourse,” possibly a narrower term. On the other hand, the NIVZSB takes a more rigid stance than the ESVSB on 1 Corinthians 7:10-16: “There are only two options for a divorced woman: (1) remain unmarried or (2) reconcile with her husband.” It acknowledges regarding verse 15 ("the brother or sister is not bound in such circumstances”) that “it is often suggested that this allows a deserted Christian spouse to remarry” but states that “this interpretation is not plausible.”

Homosexuality: Both study Bibles state clearly that homosexual relations are sinful. An NIVZSB comment on Romans 1:26-27 succinctly states that “in making humans [sic!] beings male and female…, God manifests his intention for human sexual relations” (p. 2293).

Gender Roles: It will surprise some readers to learn that the NIVZSB takes nearly the same stance on gender roles as the ESVSB does. In all the gender texts I survey, the NIVZSB and ESVSB adopt nearly the same position—gender role difference in marriage and church are timeless principles, men are called to authoritative and loving leadership in home and church while women are called to submit, and women may not be overseers but may perhaps be (non-teaching) deacons. The NIVZSB does apparently leave the door open for women to teach men in non-authoritative positions in the church, but otherwise the differences between the study Bibles are differences of tone more than position, with the ESVSB giving a more rigorous defense of the position shared by both.

Nonresistance and Relationship to Government: On Matthew 5:38-48 the NIVZSB says that “Jesus is prohibiting retaliation for wrongs experienced.” It explains that a slap on the cheek is “a common Jewish insult by a superior to a subordinate, not an aggressor’s blow.” (p. 1939). This brief interpretation leaves the door open for Christians to use deadly force in other circumstances, though the NIVZSB does not explicitly state this. The ESVSB presents this position much more clearly: “Jesus is not prohibiting the use of force by governments, police, or soldiers when combating evil… One should not return an insulting slap, which would lead to escalating violence. In the case of a more serious assault, Jesus’ words should not be taken to prohibit self-defense…, for often a failure to resist a violent attack leads to even more serious abuse.” This difference is also evident in places like Romans 12-13, where the NIVZSB gently questions whether governments have the right to administer capital punishment, while the ESVSB suggests one way believers can "overcome evil with good" is through military or police force.

Spiritual Gifts: I haven’t found any clear statement where the NIVZSB strongly affirms whether or not the “miraculous” spiritual gifts continue to this day. This is remarkable, given that Sam Storms, a strong continuationist, was chosen to author an essay on “Prophets and Prophecy.” In this article he only vaguely hints at his own position by some present-tense references to prophecy. The ESVSB adopts a similar stance: “Bible-believing Christians disagree as to whether the gift of tongues ceased after the apostolic age of the early church, or whether tongues is a spiritual gift that should continue to be practiced today.” Clearly, both Bibles are aiming to avoid a fight over this volatile topic.

Foreknowledge, Predestination, Election: At Romans 8:29-30 the NIVZSB gives two possible explanations for God’s foreknowledge: “Perhaps ‘knew ahead of time’…: God ‘foreknew’ who would believe in him and so predestined them. But ‘know’ probably has the biblical sense of ‘enter into relationship with’…: God chose to initiate a relationship with people ‘before the creation of the world’… and on that basis ‘predestined’ them” (p. 2307). The ESVSB only presents the second option, and emphasizes that “predestined” means “predetermined” and that God’s calling is “effective,” not merely an invitation. At Romans 9 comments are similar. At Ephesians 1 both are strongly Calvinistic. At 1 Timothy 2:4, the ESVSB has a lengthy note that describes both Arminian and Calvinist interpretations without taking sides (surprise!), ending thus: “However one understands the extent of the atonement, this passage clearly teaches the free and universal offer of salvation to every single human being; ‘desires’ shows that this offer is a bona fide expression of God’s good will.” On this Timothy verse the NIVZSB suggests that “what God ‘wants’ may be hindered by lack of human faith.” This last statement opens the door to non-Calvinistic interpretations (but does not demand them). The NIVZSB and the ESVSB are both similarly Calvinistic regarding God’s choice and offer of salvation, but with occasional surprising flexibility.

Eternal Security: At Hebrews 6:4-6 the NIVZSB notes the “great difficulties for interpretation,” describes several common interpretations, and finally concludes that “those who do not hold on to faith in Christ show that their experience was superficial rather than genuine” (p. 2503). The ESVSB directs us to a note at Hebrews 3:14, which says “Scripture is clear… that true believers cannot lose their salvation.” At Hebrews 7:25 the NIVZSB argues that the fact that Jesus “always lives to intercede for” believers “precludes their turning back” (p. 2507). But such statements are relatively rare in the NIVZSB. At 1 John 2:19 the NIVZSB makes no clear theological deductions, while the ESVSB states that “this implies that those who are truly saved will never abandon Christ.” The ESVSB makes similar statements at John 6:40, John 10:28, 2 Peter 1:10, and Jude 1:2—all places where the NIVZSB makes no clear assertions about whether believers can ever lose their salvation.

Sabbath and Lord’s Day: These study Bibles take a similar stance on this topic. At Exodus 20:8-11 the ESVSB makes no Christian application, while the NIVZSB mentions that the Sabbath “anticipates the experience of rest through faith in Christ” (p. 155). At Colossians 2:16-17 the ESVSB says “it is debated whether the Sabbaths in question included the regular seventh-day rest of the fourth commandment, or were only the special Sabbaths of the Jewish festal calendar.” At Galatians 4:10 the ESVSB notes that some “believe that the weekly Sabbath command is not temporary but goes back to God’s pattern in creation.” The NIVZSB whispers (with dramatically different tone than Paul!) that “treating certain times as more sacred than others… is not an essential feature of Christian faith” (p. 2390). Thus, unlike the ESVSB, the NIVZSB apparently never suggests the Sabbath command may still apply. However, it seems a little more open to seeing Sunday worship as being normative (see description of the practice of the early church at 1 Cor. 16:2 and Rev. 1:10).

Israel and the Church: Both are inconsistent on this topic. The NIVZSB's “Exile and Exodus” article presents one perspective strongly: “As the only perfectly obedient Israelite...—a faithful remnant of one—Jesus (not the unbelieving nation) is the sole heir of all of the covenantal promises made to Abraham, Israel, and David... Life everlasting, a land flowing with milk and honey, a posterity as numerous as the stars, a perpetual reign over all creation, and uninhibited access to the Father’s presence all belong exclusively to him” (p. 2661). Both agree that at 1 Peter 1:1 Peter “implicitly claims that the church of Jesus Christ is the new Israel, made up of both Jewish and Gentile believers in Christ” (NIVZSB, p. 2539; ESVSB says "explicitly"). However, both Bibles (perhaps especially the ESVSB) also suggest multiple times that seeing a future role for an ethnic Israel is a legitimate interpretative approach.

CONCLUDING OBSERVATIONS:

My general sense is that the NIVZSB is slightly more careful than the ESVSB to avoid offending its readers—or, to state things more positively, that it is aiming to please a slightly larger readership.

On the one hand it is equally careful to adhere to the basic evangelical commitments (things such as traditional authorship and the historical reliability of Scripture), while also feeling equally free to adopt recent approaches to synthesizing the Bible and science (no firm stance on the days of Genesis or the question of evolution).

On the other hand, it seems slower to affirm some of the more fundamentalist ideas of evangelicalism (things such as capital punishment or a special plan for the future of ethnic Israel), it feels slightly more cautious as it affirms some points of evangelical doctrinal dispute (inability of true believers to fall from the faith, distinct gender roles in the church), and it is sometimes slower to pick sides at all regarding what the text means for today (the Christian and the military).

But such differences are comparatively minor when set within the widely diverse translations and study Bibles currently on the market. Both the NIVZSB and the ESVSB are solidly conservative evangelical and among the very best in their class. I am very happy to recommend both for your judicious use.
-----------
The ESVSB is still about as good as a study Bible gets. I give both 4-1/2 out of 5 stars.

A Must Have
By Jesse R
I love this study Bible. It's very helpful in understanding what is going on in the part of the bible you are reading. The ESV is an awesome translation. It is very accurate and easy to read. I highly recommend this to anyone wanting to study and learn more about the bible.

Do NOT purchase the newer, indexed version - index tabs are way off
By JoyF
I just received the indexed study bible, and the indexed pages are completely off except for Genesis and the Concordance. It is missing the tab for Numbers, Deuteronomy, and Joshua. So when you go to Numbers where you should see this tab, you see the tab for Judges, Ruth, and Samuel instead. I've attached a photo showing this. That means all subsequent tabs are incorrect until you get to the Concordance. I am shocked by the lack of QC and am returning this right away.
