Chu (Thick Face, Black Heart, AMC, 1992; Asian Mind Game, Rawson, 1991), president of Asian Marketing Consultants, has written a book that strives to teach people how to become more successful and satisfied with their lives. Though the publisher describes Chu as "the most successful American author in Asia," the book is slightly removed from reality. Chu uses Jung's story of the rainmaker, a myth in which a man who does nothing accomplishes much because he puts himself "in harmony with the Divine," as the foundation of the book. Unfortunately, she also uses bad science, bad history, and bad psychology to prove her points. I ordered this book on the recommendation of a colleague (we're both executive coaches) that grew out of a conversation we had.

"No, I'm not familiar with her, so I'll check out Amazon.com."
I received the book today, and could not put it down! The accessibility of the material and lack of "woo woo" mentality was very satisfying. Practical applications abound, and I'm glad it's the hardback version for I will constantly refer to it. The First Secret -- Fine-Tune Your Actions -- was so well-crafted, it could stand on its own as a small reference book of 72 pages - almost every page has something I deemed worthy of underlining. Then what a delight in The Second Secret --Put Your Mind At Ease -- with a twenty-page piece of history on George Washington to demonstrate the Three Phases of Destiny, and a lucid explanation of quantum theory. And I'm only on page 150 of the 200 pages! Buy the book for The Third Secret - not what you're expecting. Elegantly weaving the secrets of the Rainmaker parable from Carl Jung and multiple cultural viewpoints (The Bible, Buddhist, Hindu to name just a few) throughout the book, this author delivers the goods. She brings so much added value to the premise of the title, any reader or writer or professional mentor / coach / consultant will enjoy it and their clients will also benefit.

Top of its genre!

This book is amazingly honest and to the point. There is a lot of "self-help" books out there that have nothing to do with principle but all to do with selling. Even put to gether by authors who have not practiced what they have collected and may not know about "true" living. This book in my view is the oposite. I have been designing and conducting motivational courses for years. And I fully recommend this book because it is an eye opener! And even for the one who has already been given happiness it is a joy to read.

Grade 6 Up-This book consists of a dozen unusual dreams of Robert, a 12 year old who thinks math is "a waste of time." The number devil who visits him each night changes that with magical demonstrations of mathematical concepts that intrigue the boy. Starting simply with the concept of infinity, the devil introduces prime numbers, square roots, Fibonacci numbers, and more, inventively using coconuts, multiplying rabbits, and other oddities as examples. He demonstrates concepts in imaginative ways that actually make sense, focusing on general principles, with an emphasis on the pleasing consistency of mathematics. Robert becomes interested and is named a "number apprentice" in the final chapter. Building new concepts from those previously learned makes the progression to more complicated areas easier and satisfying. The devil uses made-up terms (e.g., square roots are called "rutabagas") and the author warns that students should learn the correct words. A helpful index identifies these terms, and also reveals the identities of various mathematicians referred to by other names (Johan van de Lune is the "Man in the Moon"). Colorful, cartoon illustrations appear throughout, along with useful tables and diagrams. The dream world recalls Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Norton Juster's The Phantom Tollbooth (Knopf, 1961), but the attempts at humor and silliness here never match the wit and charm of those classics. Although it is not a fully realized fantasy, The Number Devil may intrigue and teach readers willing to try an unusual introduction to math principles.

An Excellent Book to Interest Children in Mathematics

I checked this book out of the library to read to my 8 year old daughter (she wanted me to read "Flatland" to her and I thought the dated language might get in the way). She loved it and now I plan to purchase two copies; one for her and one for my 12 year old son. The book jacket decribed the book as a cross between Flatland and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. I would have described it as a cross between Flatland an The Phantom Tollbooth, but, no matter. It definitely provides food for thought for any reasonably inquisitive child; and may provide more for a child already interested in mathematics.
I had read several biographies of famous scientific or mathematical type people who credited Bell's "The Men of Science" as sparking their initial interest in math. I was searching for something more appropriate for a young girl. While this wasn't ideal in that regard (e.g. there's a mention of the fact that their aren't many women in "Number Heaven" with a half-hearted apology that this was changing), I do believe that this can at least serve as kindling for a later fire of interest.
Each chapter takes place in a dream between the books protagonist (Robert) and his "Number Devil"; a sort of less than sainthood guru status. Each dream takes on a different example of mathematical interest, primarily from Number Theory. Should be of interest to children from six to sixteen. The protagonist is twelve.
Highly recommended.

Easy read, but good book....

Crossing the story Alice in Wonderland with a small, red, fiery-tempered devil with a passion for numbers gives you The Number Devil, a perfect tale with funny and curious characters.
Robert hates math, and he gets irritated because his math teacher doesn't allow calculators in class. In addition to that, he has peculiar dreams all the time. Then, one night, completely out of the blue, he dreams about a Number Devil, who takes him away to a fantastic world of numbers. Robert learns all about different mathematical ideas and concepts in a fun way. Over the course of 12 different nights, Robert learns about simple math ideas like factorials, fractions, the importance of zero, and the idea of infinity. But Robert's adventures don't stop there; Robert also learns about more complex things like triangle numbers, Fibonacci numbers, imaginary numbers, and irrational numbers. The Number Devil makes up funny terms in order to explain these to Robert. Square roots are called "rutabagas," prime numbers are "prima donnas," squaring becomes "number hopping," the Fibonacci sequence is called "the Bonacci numbers, " and factorials are named "vrooms."
Did you know that you can take any even number larger than two and find two prime numbers that add up to it? The Number Devil presents different mathematical ideas to Robert, using funny things like furry calculators and coconuts. Even Robert uses what he learns in his dreams in class. For example, the Number Devil uses coconuts to show Robert what triangular numbers are. He uses the coconuts to make triangles on the ground, and he comes up with the first ten triangular numbers: 1, 3, 6, 10, 15, 21, 28, 36, 45, and 55. Next, he comes up with a little rule for triangular numbers: Any number greater than 1 can be the sum of two or three triangle numbers. Try 83, for example. It is the sum of 10 + 28 + 45.
Not only does the Number Devil show Robert different math principles, but he takes him to Number Paradise, and there Robert meets different mathematicians like Carl Friedrich Gauss (of course, the Number Devil makes up names for the mathematicians as well, so Gauss is called Professor Horrors), Georg Cantor (Professor Singer), and Leonhard Euler (Owl). Robert also meets Felix Klein (Dr. Happy Little), and he sees the famous `Klein Bottle' (the Little Bottle). The Number Devil shows how one can't tell the inside of this object from the outside!
I thought this book was very enjoyable and funny. The illustrations were amusing and the characters were hilarious. I especially liked the Number Devil himself. I would give the book an eight out of ten only because some of the concepts described were very elementary, and it became boring for me at times. Overall, I didn't learn a lot, but the little tidbits of information and the more complex ideas were interesting. I would recommend this book for all ages as a good read aloud or for a bedtime reading book. Happy reading!

Its a good book

I am nine years old. It was a good book. I like that it was about adventure and math and a story and you could do activities from the book. I liked the triangle numbers, the prima-donna numbers, Bonacci. I especially liked going to number hell and meeting all the number devils, and seeing the imaginative guy and the funny drinking glasses. I liked that Pascal's triangle had so many interesting things you could do with it.

Take Collins Along

The first poem I read of Billy Collins' was "Forgetfulness". I am glad it is in this collection because it so well epitomizes the everyday nature of his poems, the way he speaks to us as if we were just visiting and he is describing some incident in his life, or expounding on something that matters to him. I could see him in the student lounge, in the leather chair next to the Rodin, at our local Dry Dock Brewery or at a coffee shop. He would be the one we would all gather around. I am the one, however, who posted that his reading style doesn't do justice to his writing. In retrospect, maybe his low key reading is nuanced to go with his poems.

Now, that I have been trying to write poems, when I read his poems, I find myself wanting to mimic his writing style. One of the things I notice is that he doesn't hurry things, he doesn't summarize. I feel rushed in my writing, like I'm giving an acceptance speech at the Oscars and someone is standing off camera signaling me to wrap it up. Billy, though, for example, in "Fishing on the Susquehanna in July" takes 13 stanzas to describe how the closest he ever came to fishing on the Susquehanna was seeing a painting in a museum, in Philadelphia, of someone in a little boat fishing on the Susquehanna. These extra lines, though, give the poem its depth and reality and the well drawn images then stay with you.

Billy Collins then goes deeper and adds themes to his basic subject matter. If Norman Rockwell had painted like Billy writes the pictures would not only have been warm slices of Americana, they would have contained poignant bits of reality such as maybe a woman looking bored at Thanksgiving Dinner or quarreling with whomever was seated by her.

I like how he shares with us as if we were his close friends. For example, in "The Three Wishes" he goes through the first several stanzas showing how the foolish man and wife wasted the wishes they were granted. The man, hungry from work, wishes for sausages which angers his wife who then wishes the pan to stick to his nose. Collins discusses the moral of the story, the foolishness of the couple and what they could have had. Then, he ends, in an almost covert whisper by telling us that this story always makes him hungry for sausages.

And of course he makes it all look so easy. Another favorite of mine is "Dharma" about his dog who "If only she did not shove the cat aside/every morning/and eat all his food/what a model of self-containment she would be". His use of line breaks and enjambment set the pace and place emphasis where he wants it. His techniques are subtle such as his use of consonance in this poem with brown coat, blue collar, steady breathing. He uses assonance too in this poem, earthly, eager, ears.

It's neat that he became Poet Laureate, that he was recognized for what he offers. This collection of his is a great book, for yourself or as a gift for a dear friend.

Billy Collins’ poetry collection "Sailing Alone Around the Room: New and Selected Poems" is a book for the average everyday reader or a reader who is new to poetry. Unlike poetry that is heavy in its meaning, metaphors, or use of older English such as poetry by William Shakespeare, John Milton, or Robert Frost, Collins creates poetry that is more accessible to the modern reader by making his poetry more approachable, especially if the reader is new to poetry. The different ways his poetry is more approachable is through his readability, language usage, relatable content, and his use of imagery.

Readability
Collins poetry is humorous, light, and insightful allowing an inexperienced reader to easily read through his poetry while also giving substance to the more devout poetry reader. He is able to gently guide the reader through a poem allowing the reader to smile, to get anxious, or to laugh without always having to look for a deeper meaning, as the surface of the poem is just as telling as the deeper meaning.

Language Use
His modern language is relatable to everyone in the modern age giving a feeling of inclusiveness to his poetry. New readers will be able to laugh with Collins in his poem “Another Reason Why I Don’t Keep a Gun in the House”, while more experienced readers will enjoy other poems such as the poem “Litany”.

Relatable
Most of the poems within this collection have relatable content. There are multiple poems relating to school settings, and usually end up as parodies that give passing commentary as well as entertainment to this theme. If you are a history buff, then Billy Collins poems are for you as well, as many of his poems make comments on historical events. Overall, this collection has a variety of poems that allow almost all readers to connect with at least one poem.

Imagery
Another advantage of reading Collins’ poetry is his use of imagery. The reader does not need to struggle to understand the content because of the simplicity of the language he uses, and the ability to create an image in the reader’s mind. Collins’ poetry is good at creating an image in the reader’s head through the words he chooses to use.

Intelligent, accessible, striking poetry

Billy Collins describes his poetry best himself, in "Lines Lost Among Trees", when he writes of "...the little insight at the end/wagging like the short tail/of a perfectly obedient spaniel/sitting by the door." Many of the poems throughout this collection feature a turn of phrase- if not a twist, then a recapitulation- in the final stanza that makes the reader draw a breath, then say "Yes. That's it."
There's little that's academic or self-consciously poetical about Collins' writing, although he is both a professor and a poet for whom his art is subject matter as much as medium. Some of the best, most touching and funniest works in this collection deal with poetry itself, but none are contrived. There's sensuality along with intelligence- "Osso Buco", "The Best Cigarette" and others deal concretely but delicately with the sensations of living and a poet's response to them. There's jazz in plenty, evoked, imitated and responded to, and plenty of musings (and musings on musings) on the poetical old standbys of sex and death. And it all works.
I couldn't find lines better than Collins' own to begin this review, nor to end it (from "Reading an Anthology of Chinese Poems of the Sung Dynasty, I Pause to Admire the Length and Clarity of Their Titles"):
How easy he has made it for me to enter here,
to sit down in a corner;
cross my legs like his, and listen.

How Improvement Happens

We have all seen someone make sudden, startling improvement at a task after practicing it for some time, and likely have even done so ourselves at some point in our lives. In "The Talent Code," author Daniel Coyle explains that such improvements come about by making small errors and fixing them—myelin, a substance that grows around nerve cells, is built, enabling those who had been practicing tasks to perform them much more proficiently.

Coyle examines how talent is grown by going all over the world to investigate myelin and skill development. In areas such as sports, music, and education, the author shows why talent hotbeds appear in unlikely places and that myelin is utilized in both mental and physical tasks.

"The Talent Code" reminds that skills are not built overnight, requiring what Coyle calls "deep practice." The author looks at the issue of motivation and discusses the traits that successful teachers and coaches have in guiding their pupils. Myelin production becomes more difficult with age, Coyle observes, but it can still be built in our later years with constant practice.

This volume notes that scientific work concerning myelin is still in its early stages. As it is, there are profound implications for learning and self-improvement set forth in "The Talent Code," so it will be fascinating to learn of new discoveries in this area in the years to come.

Greatness Isn't Born - It's Grown

This brilliantly written book is one of the most impactful I have read this year. Author Daniel Coyle has done an outstanding job of taking research into myelin, a substance that insulates nerve cells, and turning that scientific breakthrough knowledge into a prescription for achieving greatness in a variety of fields, from music to athletics to business.

Using powerful case studies, Coyle has identified three distinct key elements that determine how individuals achieve greatness: Deep Practice, Ignition, and Master Coaching.

Deep Practice involves short burst of energy - perfecting, identifying errors, repeating. Each time an individual - violinist, tennis player, soccer player - engages in this kind of Deep Practice, the nervous system generates new layers of myelin to further insulate and streamline the flow of electrical energy within neural synapses.

In order for an individual to have the motivation, persistence, and determination to engage in this level of Deep Practice, there needs to have been an Ignition event. In the case of Korean women who now dominate the LPGA, the igniting event was Se Ri Pak winning the McDonald's LPGA Championship in 1998, and becoming a visible symbol and role model for young Korean girls. Five years later - enough time for Deep Practice to have made a significant difference - Korean women began to dominate women's golf.

The third key element is Master Coaching.. Mr. Coyle calls these master teachers "The Talent Whisperers." Common traits are patience, nurturing spirit and the ability to use years of observation and pattern recognition to know just the right word to say to encourage and motivate the person being coached. IConic UCLA coach John Wooden is cited as a prototype for this kind of Master Coach.

The implications of these three key elements that lead to greatness are far reaching. They can be applied to the realm of parenting, teaching, coaching, and business leadership. This is a MUST READ book for anyone who aspires to greatness or to lead others in achieving greatness.

You're not fated to be mediocre

Coyle brings an empowering, exciting message to us: that we can grow our own greatness. That our skills are not fixed; they're not inherited or inherent inside of our DNA. I can't help but wish my parents had known the concepts of this book when I struggled with my baseball swing in 8th grade. But, I'm thankful to have this message known to me as a 31-year old -- both for my own growth of talent, and for how I will raise my future children.

After writing a draft of this glowing review, I decided to read the most helpful critical review of the book, as penned by Ronald Forbes. In many ways, his review was accurate, and also somewhat persuasive. In light of his review, I have tempered my own review and rating, down from 5 stars to 4 stars. To summarize, Forbes rightly points out that Coyle's book is more "pop journalism" (which I have no problem with...it helps keep this book interesting, and from being bogged down in scientific jargon), and he says the book's claims are nothing new. But if an author can present old ideas in a fresh way that can help us change our behaviors, then he should be commended for it!

This is the kind of book that you cannot help telling your friends and family about. Over the several weeks during which I read this book, I brought aspects of the book up in at least half a dozen conversations. It's a fun book. And you learn a lot.

I'm not skilled in science, so I'm not going to try to summarize what the heck myelin is. Basically, it's stuff in your brain that grows as you develop skill in ANY given area of life. So, Coyle tries to help us explain how to grow more myelin in our brains.

Coyle's three keys to growing talent:

1) Deep Practice - when I go out and play 18 holes, this is about as far from deep practice as you can get. Why? Because deep practice is all about fixing mistakes. You can do that on the driving range or the putting green, but not on the course (well, not easily, anyway). Think about it: how much time does the average golfer spend playing vs. practicing? 5-to-1? 10-to-1? Or any other sport or skill, for that matter.

The concept of deep practice is not about practicing for countless hours each day; instead, most of the talent hotbeds profiled in the book had pupils training less than e hours per day. But the 3 hours of practice at these hotbeds has exponentially greater yield than regular practice.

Deep practice is about struggling to get better. When we have to grapple with a weakness in our game, we can get to a point of breakthrough. "Experts practice differently and more strategically. When they fail, they don't blame it on luck or themselves. They have a strategy they can fix." (p 86).

2) Ignition - at some point in each of our lives, we watch a friend or colleague shoot to the moon (in some specific area of life or work), and we wonder, "how did he do that?" What switch was flipped in his brain? When we see it happen to someone just like us, it gives a sense that we could acquire that particular talent, whether it be a tennis swing, an ability to remodel a home, or learn to play the violin.

Coyle writes, "Ignition is about the set of signals and subconscious forces that create our identity; the moments that lead us to say that is who I want to be." He looks all over the globe to study how talent hotbeds were ignited: South Korean female golfers, Russian tennis players, Brazilian soccer players, Curaçaon baseball players, to a charter school that started in Houston. These are great stories; fun to share with friends.

3) Master Coaching - this doesn't mean you need some expensive, elite, impossible-to-access, famous coach. Nope, you just need a coach that has loads of experience, plenty of passion, and a knack for connecting interpersonally with his students.

"Master coaches aren't like heads of state. Their personality--their core skill circuit--is to be more like farmers: careful, deliberate cultivators of myelin." (165)

My 3 greatest takeaways from the book:

1) Praise your children for their hard work, not for their intelligence or their innate abilities. If they make the connection between hard work and increasing skill, they will be increasingly motivated to work hard, which therefore leads to more talent. An upward cycle, if you will.
2) Savor the struggle. When my slice is really acting up on the golf course, view it as a mountain to be conquered. Zone in and do whatever it takes to correct that circuitry.
3) Don't complain and envy those with more talent than me. Instead, use it as motivation and say, "If he can do it, so can I."

A Useful Guide to Applied Self-Hypnosis

The book arrived promptly and in very good condition. I bought this book to replace several that I have given away. I liked Lecron's book because the methods for inducing hypnosis and most of the applications were clearly explained; the ones that I tried worked for me. I found post-hypnotic suggestion a particularly useful tool. Some of the successful applications were the use of hypnosis to reduce my extreme fear of flying, to be able to sleep and wake up refreshed in a different time zone, or to prepare for a business briefing. I have also used it for enhanced concentration. The psychology in some instances is antiquated and possibly offensive to some, however one must take into account the period and attitudes of the time it was written. I am sure there are a number of good, if not better sources on the subject, but this one was adequate for my immediate needs.

This IS the one you're looking for.

I bought my copy of LeCron's _Self-Hypnotism_ when I was a sophomore in college, back in the late 1970s. It has become dog-eared over the years since, and the binding is starting to come loose, but it is one of my most treasured reference books, and I own a LOT of reference books. This book was old and dated when I bought it, but even when I pick it up today and read through it, I realize that it sticks to certain fundamental concepts and truths that it will likely always have value.

This was the first book I ever bought on hypnosis or self-hypnosis. I've added several more volumes on this topic over the subsequent years, some of which are quite good, but I keep coming back to LeCron because of his easy, down-to-earth and comfortable writing style, his practical approach, and his useful applications. I have used his examples and techniques to successfully overcome a number of personal difficulties. I'm a musician and stage fright has always been a problem for me. I used his techniques to overcome it and to build confidence in my playing ability. It helped me to stop smoking. When working through a mountain of material I needed to assimilate for my Master's thesis, I turned my subconscious loose on the problem before turning in for the night, giving myself the suggestion that my subconscious would find what I was looking for. It worked while I slept and came up with an insightful and unique theory, which became the foundation for my Thesis. While not strictly self-hypnosis, it was because of what I learned of the workings of the subconscious mind from this book that gave me the idea to do this. I've even used his pendulum technique during exams. I recall asking my physics professor if he minded if I used a pendulum for an upcoming mid-term. Not only did he not mind, he encouraged me to do so, and even took a moment out from his lecture to mention the technique to the class and the theory behind it -- namely that the subconscious mind likely already knows the answers and using the pendulum was one successful technique at getting to the truth. I was not the only student who used a pendulum for that mid-term. :) I scored high on it, too, and I've made occasional use of this technique ever since.

My attitude toward LeCron and the topic of self-hypnosis is, "What have you got to lose?" Nothing. The book is cheap, it's a rather slender volume that reads easily, so it's something that can be knocked off in a weekend, and the techniques certainly can do no harm, but can only help. Once you've had a taste of success with this book, you'll want more and it will provide you with the foundation to achieve your goals. To me, LeCron is a must read. Pure and simple.

One of the best books of its kind....

One of my favorite books from decades ago. I think this is the beset book written on hypnosis that I have been able to discover. I have used it to quit smoking forty years ago. Through the years I have used it on less stubborn problems but it has become an effective tool in my arsenal of self-help techniques. I recommend the book highly.
