About the Author
T. M. Kubiak is Quality and Productivity Executive at Bank of America. Previously he served as director of Six Sigma for Sears, Roebuck and Company, and for nearly 23 years filled several engineering and Six Sigma leadership roles in various locations with Honeywell International. His roles there included principal engineer; Total Quality advisor; manager, Process Improvement, Supply Management; and program manager/technical senior staff, Six Sigma Plus. Kubiak has received many awards, is frequently published in various journals and magazines, and is a sought-after presenter. Kubiak is an ASQ CQE, CRE, Certified Quality Manager, and SSBB. Donald W. Benbow is a partner of Iowa Quality Systems, and brings extensive teaching and training expertise to this collaboration. For 33 years, he taught college mathematics, statistics, engineering, and computer science courses. He has conducted lean manufacturing seminars, assisted in a Six Sigma project at John Deere Corporation, and developed software for process control applications for a subsidiary of Monsanto Corporation. Beneficial but not sufficient for passing CSSBB

Like many other folks, I recommend getting the Quality Council of Indiana CSSBB Primer if you want to pass the test. Primer does a much better and thorough job teaching challenging statistical concepts and calculations. That said, this books is was definitely beneficial for me in passing the CSSBB Exam:

1) Good test reference - unlike the primer had a decent glossary useful for exam
2) Does explain SIMPLER concepts quickly and efficiently - Primer is sometimes wordy and goes into concepts not mentioned in the BOK.
3) The supplemental CD-ROM has questions that were very similar in difficulty to the ACTUAL exam. So a more accurate baseline to gauge exam readiness. While the Primer blue page questions do ensure you understand the concepts well, it's much more in-depth than actual exam questions.

So if you can get this used for under $40 for a 3rd party I would suggest getting it. However, know the Primer would and should be your primary study resource.

Defective Product

This has to be the worst "instructional" book that I have ever purchased in my entire life. The way it explains things, wait that's too positive, the truth is that it doesn't explain anything; no explanation of theory, no thoughtful exploration of concepts, and a complete lack of clarity when the authors are attempting to explain something. It's as if the authors took a bunch of random information and graphs put it all inside of a word scrambler and then printed everything out and put a shiny hard cover on it; all the while laughing as order after order comes in. The "thoughtful" examples provided in this book are completely incoherent as if the authors had never interacted with another human before but were then asked to explain something. If you're looking for a good doorstop or are planning to host a book burning; then this book is definitely for you because it is truly the "money pit" of text books. The fact that an organization that prides itself in quality (ASQ) even put its seal of approval on this book is absolutely ridiculous to me. Do not waste your money on this book! However, if you are still interested my copy is currently for sale.

Good study companion, not good test companion

Do not buy this book as your go-to source for the ASQ Black Belt exam. As others have said, I too found this book to have numerous calculation gaffs, which makes it hard to know if you understand the concepts, b/c you can't verify your answers. Added to this complaint is the fact that the book is not the easiest to understand. The language is overly complex, and the examples (especially calculations) are not always explained in full. Without a complete explanation for the math, it can be very frustrating to study with. I would only recommend this as a companion to the Quality Council of Indiana's CSSBB Primer, and then only for prep. I did not use this book for the test AT ALL. Instead, I used the Primer, especially the index, and NO OTHER SOURCES, and passed the test on my first try.

Stuart (The Bloodless Revolution) writes of the perilous illusion of abundance and how countries can reduce food waste by accurately examining how much they toss away due to poor storage or unused surplus—and why. European and American food manufacturers, supermarkets and consumers throw away between 30% and 50% of their food supply—enough to feed the world's hungry. Waste also occurs as a result of inadequate harvesting and farming techniques, prevalent in countries like Pakistan, where the author examines the need for better grain harvesting and land cultivation. If trees were planted on all of the land currently being used to grow unnecessary surplus and wasted food, they could offset between 50 to 100 percent of the world’s man-made greenhouse gas emissions.

Stuart provides a much needed reality check on food waste...

In "Waste: Uncovering the Global Food Scandal," Tristram Stuart reveals the ugly and massive scale of the food waste problem, along with the "connectedness" of the global food system and the negative impact of the wasteful habits of rich countries on less developed countries and the environment.

Stuart provides a reality check and shows that we need to think differently about our food; noting that we produce more than enough food now - and that we are capable of feeding all of the hungry people in the world if we stop wasting food and use those resources effectively.

He educates us on the severity of the problem throughout the food chain, including issues at the supermarket level (where overstocking and displays of "perfect" produce lead to substantial waste) as well as issues at the manufacturing level, where that same quest for perfection - along with overproduction and minimal costs associated with environmental externalities - leads to additional waste.

He also covers many other key themes including the extent of household waste, the waste resulting from confusion over sell-by dates, the alarming waste in our fisheries, the value of using all parts of animals, and the need for infrastructure investment to reduce losses from spoilage in less developed areas where hunger is already a severe problem.

Stuart effectively makes the link to climate change and shows that our culture of waste puts enormous pressure on the environment; as we seek to grow more and more food we consume more and more land, deplete finite resources, and pollute our air and water. He notes that we all need to look not only at wasted food but to all of the resources that went into producing it, the resources consumed in the discard process, and the ensuing environmental harm as wasted food decomposes in landfills.

Stuart shows us that as consumers, we have the power to influence retailers and hence drive change through the supply chain. We become more aware that we have a social responsibility to make a concerted effort to reduce our food waste and make good use of those resources when nearly one billion individuals on the planet are hungry. Stuart provides awareness of the need for change, and notes that we would be well advised to reflect on lessons in frugality from our past (such as the World War II era), and from specific cultures (like the Uighurs).

In sum, when it comes to food waste and the larger food system that drives it, we need a serious "rethink" - and Stuart lays the groundwork beautifully to lead us down that path. "Waste" is an outstanding work; a great read for those interested in the nine billion by 2050 problem and the potential for reductions in food waste to help mitigate it. It is a call to everyone - especially to those in rich countries - that wasting 30-50% of food produced is indeed a "scandal" of global proportions and is not sustainable.

One of the best books in understanding the global food system

Easily one of my all-time favorite eye-opening books. I highly recommend this book to those in the food industry, who care about global supply chain, food supply/shortages and/or who value an understanding of "what went wrong" in our global food system. I also highly recommend Stuffed and Starved, a longer read, but relevant topic matter and another fantastic book.

From Sand and Ash is a harrowing story of love and faith shrouded in death and despair. Amy Harmon brings together the best and the worst of humanity on these pages, paving this journey with violence and bravery, horror and love. It's a ruthless barrage of emotions, this story, a relentless war between life and death, between good and evil, illustrated exquisitely by an author whose writing prowess knows no bounds. I was torn between eagerly unearthing the twists and turns that would surely come with each turn of the page, and dreading what was to come, dreading this book ending at all. The story of Eva Rosselli and Angelo Bianco is as enchanting as it is chilling. The love they share is forbidden, both by duty and by law. But their attraction, the absolute truth of their lifelong love is a beautiful, palpable thing that consumes the reader despite the horrific circumstances in which that love exists.

I've read many books of the true accounts of holocaust survivors, seen the movies and documentaries, taken classes concentrating on this area of study. But never before have I been made to fall in love with an individual, with a couple, with a family, before I took such a horrific journey with them. To feel as though you know their strength, to get to know their life up until the moment it is stolen away, to know their helplessness in the face of something so unjust and so terrifying, it changes the way you look at the world, to see such atrocities through their eyes. This may be a fictionalized account inspired by true events, but you won't convince my heart Eva and Angelo aren't real. This story weaves it's way under your skin and into your soul so you feel every step of their journey, of their fight, of this miracle. It's both beautiful and tortuous what Amy Harmon does here, but it's so right. It's so important. We don't truly know fear and loss and hopelessness until we take this journey ourselves. Opening this book, turning these pages, moving along with Eva and Angelo is taking the journey ourselves.

This is absolutely a story of survival and love. But, more, From Sand and Ash is a poignant reminder of where we all come from, that no matter where we live or who we pray to or what we believe in, we all come from the same place. We are all made of the same things. We all seek joy, we all look to find purpose. We all love and play and pray and laugh and hope, and we all just want to be understood. Above all else, we just want to be understood. That message screamed at me on every page, in every word. Our world would be such a beautiful, peaceful, harmonious one if we sought to understand each other instead of judging each other for the ways we are different, for the God we pray to, for where each of our trees first took root. The Law of Moses taught me that we should be celebrating our differences instead of being afraid to point them out, to label them. From Sand and Ash takes that sentiment and drives it home in a way that simply can't be ignored. It's a brutal demonstration of what comes when we stop trying to understand each other, when we stop trying to relate, when we take what makes us different and use it as a means to divide us, to hurt each other, to push each other away. Without a doubt, my favorite book of 2016. A stunning masterpiece!

I tried to brace myself for this story. I really did. I knew it would be a tough read and I knew what would eventually happen. But the mark of a great Amy Harmon book is her expertly crafted story that builds so very slowly - she builds you up and up and before you know it you’ve fallen for her characters and then it happens - the downfall that completely shatters you. I was not prepared for the onslaught of emotions this story brought out in me. There was one point when I just sat and wept over the horrific events that the innocent victims of this senseless war endured. And in true Amy Harmon fashion, she manages to find beauty within the horror, and teaches us lessons in even the ugliest of circumstances.

Amy does not get overly detailed about politics or the war, and everything was broken down into simple facts and explanations. She spared us the gory details and yet still manages to paint such a distinct portrayal of the suffering that took place during this time. The common theme within all of her books is that love and faith conquers all, and how hope and resilience can help you rise above even the most difficult of situations. I think her trademark message has never shined more brightly than it does in From Sand and Ash. Eva & Angelo’s story is one that I will never ever forget.

I really hope that people give this book a chance. Even if you’re not a fan of historical fiction, the message in this book is one that we need to be reminded of. We need to remember the atrocities that happened in Europe during WW2 so that millions did not die in vain, and nothing like this will EVER happen again. Thank you Amy, for honoring the memory of my Jewish ancestors and the millions of others who lived during this awful time in our history.

From Sand and Ash is so much more than a whimsical romantic tale. It's history sprinkled with a love story. Life injected with death and humanity revived from the ashes of evil and death. In a time where hope was hard to find and God was quiet no matter what God you prayed to, this was a time you had to hang on to your faith or give up entirely. Life starts everyday. In the womb a heart beats. That little soul has no idea or choice as to where they will end up and how they will be raised. The beliefs of each child is from those around them. It starts with where they live and especially what religion their loved ones practice. World War II is the perfect example of how you can't help where you were born or what God you serve but you absolutely can love, live and support anyone you choose to if you find the strength. So many fought the only way they could by hiding and those that hid them were truly the best example of Love in human form. Catholics hiding Jews. Jews helping Catholics. This is where God is love.

Amy took a true life emotional topic, a tormented part of world history and gave it faces. So many faces and so many hearts. I felt such despair when this story started because this was such a tumultuous time and place.

Our hero Angelo and heroine Eva were two characters that were vividly portrayed in every single way. Growing up together and falling in love when it's forbidden truly had my heart racing in fear and in excitement. Such heartbreaking choices that had to be made. Angelo was a true hero in every way. Eva was strong and loving. For every single time Angelo struggled with his faith and for every time Eva fought to never give up I held on to hope for these two.

This was a time of such devastating circumstances and such horrible prejudice. I was afraid for the hero and heroine from the start but I had faith that even if it all ended like so many lives ended back then that Amy would show humanity at its worst and at its best.

There were characters that stood out in bravery and and sacrifice. I felt their stories mirrored so many out there that never got a chance to speak out and share. Amy brought so much to life in this amazing tale. Thankfully the ending was the best I could hope for and the pain I felt was worth it even if it's only experienced in a story to see such a love story unfold but also to see how truly brave so many people were. While so many stories in this era had such tragic endings we should be thankful we live in a time where we can be free to worship and to love. I feel after ever single Amy Harmon book that I have been somewhat changed in a way only a magical story teller can achieve. From Sand and Ash truly will stay with me always.

PREFACE

The challenges in today's schools are increasing in frequency, complexity, and intensity, requiring school leaders to enter the schoolhouse with practical experience that prepares them to take immediate and definitive action regarding multifaceted issues. The need for the beginning administrator to have practical experience is so great that many universities are changing their leadership preparation programs to reflect a more practice-oriented approach. One organization advocating this change is the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC). The change advocated by this organization is very influential and offers a "new leadership paradigm," one that incorporates what ISLLC believes is required behavior for school leaders.

Through a series of six standards, ISLLC presents a common core of knowledge, disposition, and performances that link leadership to productive schools and enhance educational outcomes. The standards represent an effort to refine the skills of school leaders and to couple leadership with effective educational outcomes (ISLLC, 1996). These standards, the recommended changes in educational leadership preparation programs, and the development of other related performance assessment instruments have influenced a renewal of the approaches used to prepare school leaders. This change is occurring in terms of classroom instruction, assessment of leadership skills and attributes for licensure, and practical application of theoretical concepts.

This text is designed to support the new thrust by providing a series of scenarios that incorporate the behaviors informed by the ISLLC Standards. Also, theory is connected to practice in a manner that allows the prospective school leader an opportunity to reflect on problems and issues that exist in today's schools. A second, yet crucial, objective is to connect the standards and the literature on school leadership to scenarios, questions, and suggested solutions. In this regard, the indicators of the ISLLC Standards are embedded in the scenarios in both a positive and negative manner, allowing the reader to view their practical implications for school leaders.

Practicing the Art of Leadership: A Problem-based Approach to Implementing the ISLLC Standards is a compilation of scenarios and related exercises that represent the kinds of challenges and issues that surface in today's schools. It is Significantly different from the traditional case study format, which probes in an in-depth manner issues that build on one another and need to be resolved. Instead, this work recognizes that definitive action is extremely critical to the success of school leaders as they function on a day-to-day basis in a setting inherently filled with complex challenges.

This text is designed for use in a culminating course of a leadership preparation program. Therefore, the content is written based on the assumption that individuals who utilize it have already developed a basic knowledge of administrative theories and concepts that inform leadership behavior. However, if the text is used in an earlier course, it will need to be supplemented by a text that treats the theoretical concepts of leadership in a more comprehensive manner. The caution to be remembered in the use of this material (as with most behavioral material) is that there is no substitute for reflective reasoning. The reader must take care to select a solution based on the interrelationships between the people, the situation, the skills needed, and the environmental forces. An appropriate mix of theory, reflective thinking, and prescription must be identified.

I hope the prospective school leaders and the practitioners who read this text and work through the scenarios enjoy it and find it beneficial. Acknowledgments

Clear, concise and well organized.

The reading is smooth and well labelled into topics. The scenarios are helpful for promoting thinking about what we would do in each situation. The only downside is the print is somewhat small but I am also somewhat old. If you are thinking about making the transition to a building leader (or simply want to become a more aware educator), this book is for you. RJM
