About the Author

Simon Benninga is professor of finance at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and at Tel Aviv University. He is the author of numerous academic articles and three previous books. His books on financial modeling and valuation are now standards in the field of finance and have been translated into Japanese, Chinese, Polish, and Italian.

Great first book on Finance. Excel usage a major plus.

I read this book and practiced its contents in preparation for my MBA and I am glad I did. Finance requires understanding of many mathematical nuances and combining them all together to make sound business and investment decisions is inherently complicated. This book is almost 900 pages long and contains wealth of valuable finance knowledge applicable to almost all decisions involving money and time.

As the title states, this book is about Finance with Excel and only Excel (no instructions or examples using financial calculators). All the examples are explained with Excel spreadsheets and all the problems and solutions are also in Excel. The CD in this book contains all the necessary excel spreadsheets both for chapter examples and problems. I have found the provided Excel spreadsheets to be very good templates for performing financial analysis such as mortgage calculations. I advise to purchase this book ONLY with the CD unless you can download or obtain the contents of its CD elsewhere.

The last chapters are dedicated to Excel basics and I highly recommend the beginners of MS Excel to read the last chapters first.

After reading this knowledge and value rich book, you will obtain a healthy respect for the power of Finance and Excel and you will know how to use both to make sound financial and business decisions.

Some reviewers have said that some of the problems had wrong solutions. I have found no errors in either the problems or the solutions. There are some Financial concepts that are counterintuitive and a solution could seem wrong to others.

Excellent Finance Book!!

Not being a finance expert, but wanting to learn important basic finance concepts like Net Present Value, Future Value, Internal Rate of Return, etc. I bought this book because it combined this knowledge with Excel.

This is an excellent introductory book on the subject. The concepts are not easy to understand at first, but the author does an excellent job of explaining them.

The only reason I did not give it five stars is, as an earlier commenter remarked, there are a number of mistakes in the Exercise section at the end of the chapters. Not impossible to work through, but it does slow one down a little bit.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning the basics of important financial concepts.

Best finance book out there!

This book is perfect for learning finance in excel. There are no books out there that come close to this. The book goes over all the common finance topics and shows you how to solve those problems in excel. The book goes over step by step with the problems on how to solve them. The best part is the cd that comes along with the book. It shows you all the exercises in excel so you can check your work and see how the formulas work. I recommend this book to professors teaching finance and students who don't feel their current class is teaching them what they need. This book teaches you what you need in the real world. Professionals of all kind would find this book useful. A must buy especially for the low price. The book is huge! A steal!

Some of the shapes include plants, flowers, interesting geometric forms, fruits, butterflies, seashells, hearts, fire-like patterns, umbrellas, musical instruments, and a fall-like scene of pumpkins, acorns, and squirrels. My favorite was the teddy bear theme with moons and stars. Welcome to the beautiful and intricate world of whimsical mandalas. While designing 'Happy', I couldn't get out of my head Julie Andrew's song 'My Favorite Things'. This is how tulips, strawberries, butterflies, ice cream cones, Tiffany lamps, teddy bears, rainbows, lollipops, flowers, squirrels, musical instruments, and seashells made their way into the book. There is no right or wrong way to color. I had fun drawing these illustrations and I hope you'll have fun coloring them in. One more thing: if you plan on using wet media, I recommend you place an extra sheet of paper in between pages. 'Happy' is printed on medium weight paper so certain markers and watercolors are likely to bleed-through.

Something for everyone who enjoys an extended coloring project.

Laura Iancu has published a fantastic coloring book here! It is what I call an 'arm chair' book, that is to say, it is 8-1/2" x 8-1/2" so it fits perfectly on the arm of my lazy boy! Which is where I color a lot, while I am watching TV. This is a good thing as, it will take me a while to complete each picture in this book. There are 30 Mandalas in here and each one more intricate than the next. The printing is done on the right hand page and the back of that design, or the left hand page is left blank. With books this size, you can spin them and work on them in the round so you can reach every spot without picking up color on you hand. This book would be good for gel or pencil. Each drawing is a project, as the are fairly detailed in illustration. It is not just Mandalas but, fruit, birds, flowers and, animals worked into some of the Mandalas for added interest. I believe that there is something for everybody in this little book and, that included different ages! I was not compensated in any way for my review, not even a discount on the book!

The book is not anything like the concise versions by Joy Hakim, that the brick and mortar schools use. This book is very thin and skimpy. My teens are in late middle school/ high school and it looks written for elementary students.However, I haven't bought the whole set, because I wanted to see for myself first. I like Joy's style of telling a story and agree with most of her opinions on things.If you don't like history being told like a story with author's opinions and you don't mind a shorter version of the concise series, then this book is for you.

About the Author
Andrew Rex has been Professor of Physics at the University of Puget Sound since 1982. He frequently teaches the Modern Physics course, so he has a deep sense of student and instructor challenges. He is the author of several textbooks, including "Modern Physics," "Essential College Physics," and "Integrated Physics and Calculus." In addition to textbook writing, he studies foundations of the second law of thermodynamics, which has led to the publication of several papers and the widely acclaimed book, "Maxwell's Demon: Entropy, Information, Computing."

"Mastering Physics"?

Next time please dont include "With MasteringPhysics" because it made me think that it actually included the Mastering Physics to do my homework! It is obvious that the book belongs to a course that you can use on mastering physics. We are students and therefore it is not needed to lie and put with Mastering Physics when it doesn't come with it. Please dont do it again because I am a struggling student, to be taken advantage from like this. It was stupid of me to infer it actually did come with it but the wording of course made me think otherwise.

How I'm Using Essential College Physics

I''m learning Physics at the age of 70. Don't even ask me why. (Ask the Government.) I don't have time to explain. However, I'm studying Mathemtics, the Wolfson DVD Physics Course, Wolfson's College Physics, co-authored with Andrew Rex and his Essential University Physics all at the same time. That is just my way of learning at this age.
So far, I find it very useful. By studying Physics through a popular-DVD level course, a college level course and a University Level course I'm able to triangulate and integrate the information in ways that I could not simply by sitting down and reading one testbook. College Physics really helps in this triangulation / integration process.

So this rental seemed ok with your expected markings in a used book until this week. Its crunch time and the professor gave us 3 chapters 8 -11, read and do the problems. I read chapter 8 of something im already a bit confused about and go to do the problems. Then im like wtf im i chapter 9 let me turn back a few pages, well guess what someone ripped out chapter 8 question pages tbis got me into panic mode since it was due in the morning. I had to email everyone and their mother to piece the problems together. So then im reading and wtf did i skip something?, nope another page missing and one half torn. This has stressed me out so bad. If your looking for a book thats good through 7 chapters fine but this isnt for you if the class goes deep into it.

Good book, but could be more interesting

Keming Yang mentioned that "each choice of a research topic or strategy is a choice of what kind of perosn to be", and he chose this one instead of the "comparative democratic development in Russia and China". I guess it might be more fruitful if he did otherwise. A sociology perspective on the entrepreneurship couldn't seem to bridge the gap between "institution-entrepreneurship" and "entrepreneurship-development". Institution hole and double entrepreneurship had been well addressed in the rent-seeking and profit-seeking literatures, not much excitement here.

There are three other problems:
1. the non-comparative nature of the topic took away the author's potential advangage of a cultural perspective;
2. it under-estimates the structural change in China's institutional reform, especially in recent years;
3. the focus on Institution hole and double entrepreneurship blurs the theoretical thrust of the argument of "institution - entrepreneurship - development".

entrepreneurs coping

Yang provides an understanding of what entrepreneurs face in China. A vital topic if China's economy is to continue to grow strongly. He explains how people cope with the business and political situation. The Chinese Communist Party often rules by policy and not by law. Policies are usually more flexible and consistent with some overall political system than a rigid codification of law. Another key advantage is that policies can be easier for ordinary folk to understand; rather than some legalese.

The book also has several case studies of Chinese entrepreneurs. Well, some successful ones, at least. He doesn't really talk much about those who have failed. But this is scarcely any different than all those breezy business books about starting up in the US. Few of those ever chronicle the many American failures. Capitalism does have a downside, in the human toll of these failures, in any country where it is practised.

This is the best book that I have read on entrepreneurship in China. Actually, I just happen to read the review on this book by Professor Douglas Guthrie (New York University) published at Contemporary Sociology, which is very positive. In my view, everyone who wants to understand China's amazing economic achievements should read this book; it is not just about entrepreneurship; it is about how different kinds of Chinese people (officials, ordinary people, business owners, of course) behave as well. It is full of insights and conceptual innovations. I don't know whether it will become a classic, but I am pretty sure many people will still find this book useful many years later.

Great Book for Those of Us Not Raised in the Latin Tradition

This is not a songbook. It is an instruction book, and in my opinion the section on "clave" alone is worth the price. Even if you are not a pianist this book will help you understand the form of the music. The CDs are not filled with complete songs, they are meant to illustrate the ideas expressed in the book. Mauleon does give suggestions about what to listen to, most of which I've been able to find on my monthly subscription music service.

The rhythm of Latin Music is not familiar to us who grew up with music in standard 4/4 or 2/2 time. But we can learn it; if we put in the effort. If you doubt that, check out Michael Spiro.

This is a really great book. It not only shows archetypal montunos within a theoretical framework, it also provides a lot of historical context for montunos in different Cuban music styles. I'm no expert, but this book seems extremely well researched. It is not just a method book. It is an ethnomusicological work. Contains both Spanish and English, which I really appreciate, since the Spanish musical terms are rarely translated (or translated systematically) - people just use them and expect you to learn them in Spanish. Which is fine for musicians, but I like it that someone has take the trouble to verbally express these musical ideas in two idioms. Thorough and learned.

James Q. Wilson most recently taught at Boston College and Pepperdine University. He was Professor Emeritus of Management and Public Administration at UCLA and was previously Shattuck Professor of Government at Harvard University. He wrote more than a dozen books on the subjects of public policy, bureaucracy, and political philosophy. He was president of the American Political Science Association (APSA), and he is the only political scientist to win three of the four lifetime achievement awards presented by the APSA. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award, in 2003. Professor Wilson passed away in March of 2012 after battling cancer. His work helped shape the field of political science in the United States. His many years of service to this textbook remain evident on every page and will continue for many editions to come.

John J. DiIulio, Jr. is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania and has won each of Penn's most prestigious teaching awards. He was previously Professor of Politics and Public Affairs at Princeton University. He received his PhD in Political Science from Harvard University. He has been a senior fellow and directed research programs at several leading think tanks including the Brookings Institution and has won awards from the Association of Public Policy Analysis and Management, the American Political Science Association, and other bodies. He has advised presidential candidates in both parties, served on bipartisan government reform commissions, and worked as a senior staff member in the White House.

Meena Bose is executive dean for public policy and public service programs in the Peter S. Kalikow School of Government, Public Policy and International Affairs at Hofstra University. She also is director of Hofstra's Peter S. Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency. She received her Ph.D. in 1996 from Princeton University. Dr. Bose teaches courses on the American presidency, presidential leadership and policy making, and American politics. She is the author or editor of several volumes in presidency studies and American politics. She taught for six years at the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Government isn't a topic I'd choose to study but it was a prerequisite towards my degree. After reading this text I was completely surprised at how interesting it was! The book is very clearly written. Is set out well and easy to navigate through and offers both text and pictures to help consolidate what is written. It has plenty of information in it without being too overwhelming. If you wanted a more comprehensive book, then the fuller version would be more beneficial, however, this one does cover a lot of topics in detail.

Easy to read and perfect for AP study

Content is very easy to understand. I looked up the Advanced Placement topics on the college board website. This book does a good job of covering the topics on the AP exam guideline. I have not actually taken the exam, but I would feel very confident if I were going to.
