This is a great book for kids to learn about life cycles & death in a matter of fact way. As an atheist I appreciated that there was no mention of heaven or god, just facts.

Great!

Got it for my 5 year old when they suddenly started experiencing an extreme fear of death (Apparently that's a common phase for kids this age). This book didn't just help my kid through it, but it actually made me tear up. Touching. Great for helping explain death to kids.

Beautifully written.
By Woman
Beautifully written book. I highly recommended this book if you need help explaining death to a child. I purchased prior to my father-in-law's passing which came at a much sooner than expected moment. Having this book made it so much easier to explain what happened to my 5 year old and made it much easier for him to understand the whole process of life. Everything has a lifetime. This book is just so beautifully, simply and delicately written. I bought it to help my son with the grieving process, but it ended up helping us both.
I do have to mention that there are a couple of odd choices for illustrations. For example, the illustration of a splinter in a finger. My son pointed it out actually, and I had to reassure him that people generally don't get sick and die from a splinter in a finger. Not sure why they chose that illustration, but its kind of concerning for a child to see in relation to the topic.

Everything Is God: The Radical Path of Nondual Judaism, by Jay Michaelson

This exploration of the radical, yet ancient, idea that everything and everyone is God will transform how you understand your life and the nature of religion itself. While God is conventionally viewed as an entity separate from us, there are some Jews—Kabbalists, Hasidim, and their modern-day heirs—who assert that God is not separate from us at all. In this nondual view, everyone and everything manifests God. For centuries a closely guarded secret of Kabbalah, nondual Judaism is a radical reorientation of religious life that is increasingly influencing mainstream Judaism today.

Writer and scholar Jay Michaelson presents a wide-ranging and compelling explanation of nondual Judaism: what it is, its traditional and contemporary sources, its historical roots and philosophical significance, how it compares to nondual Buddhism and Hinduism, and how it is lived in practice. He explains what this mystical nondual view means in our daily ego-centered lives, for our communities, and for the future of Judaism.

Review
“One of the most widely read Jewish writers of his generation…Michaelson's deeply contemplative, thoughtful book will open the doors of the heart and mind to the possibility that what we have come to take for the “self” is just a way to label the way things look from a certain angle.”—Spirituality & Health magazine

“[Michaelson] writes with clarity, passion, and a poetic sensibility.”—Jewish Week

“Jay Michaelson’s captivating post-secular musings present for the generation of the new Jewish culture a vision of expanded religious possibilities.”—Forward

“Stripping away the barnacles of outdated concepts, Jay Michaelson aligns the best nondual thinking in Judaism with the best nondual thinking in other profound systems. Everything Is God is a timely and necessary contribution.”—Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, coauthor of Jewish with Feeling

“Jay Michaelson has written a poetic, detailed, and radical book expressing a Jewish language of oneness: not the oneness of a bearded man in the sky but the Oneness of a universe not divided against itself. He gives the reader a gift of self-beyond-the-self, a gift that cannot be owned but is well worth having.”—Rabbi Jill Hammer, author of The Jewish Book of Days

“This is an awesome, highly recommended presentation of crucial mystical concepts.”—Rabbi David A. Cooper, author of God Is a Verb

“Fantastic—a book that offers a compelling theology for thinking Jews! Read this book, and buy a copy for your rabbi as well.”—Rabbi Rami Shapiro, author of The Sacred Art of Lovingkindness

“Michaelson patiently explains, again and again, truths that are beyond words. He shares this treasure generously and passionately.”—Rabbi Jacob Staub, Professor of Jewish Philosophy and Spirituality, Reconstructionist Rabbinical College

“If my mind were not already God’s unstretchable Mind, I’d say the book is a mind-stretcher. And if the book were not already God, beyond even delight, I’d say the book is a delight.”—Rabbi Arthur Waskow, author of Godwrestling: Round 2

“Compelling . . . jolts us from an ego-centered illusion of separateness. The author’s language of oneness is certain to resonate with a younger generation of spiritual seekers.”—Jewish Book World

A New Type of Judaism
By Eric Maroney
Everything is God is a book with a great deal of heart. The reader can easily tell that Jay Michaelson is a very sincere thinker on Jewish matters and in the wider world of spirituality. With this in mind, it is easy to forgive the book some of its shortcomings. For one, the work is not overtly Jewish. Michaelson quotes Hindu and Buddhist sources far more than traditional Jewish ones. The reader gets the impression that Michaelson is more comfortable in that world. Second, the book is organized in a way that does not help the reader access this difficult subject matter. Michaelson should have thought more about the arrangement of his materials. With that said, this is a grounded and beautiful work. Michaelson presents a picture of God, spirituality, and Jewishness which appealing, productive and humane.

A very interesting approach
By georgehd
I have not finished reading this book. The approach is radical and requires concentration and repeated readings, at least in my case. The book was suggested by my Rabbi after I mentioned another book, not yet published, on Shamanism - a book that I found most interesting. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who is searching for God and who is not satisfied with the usual approaches provided by most organized religions.

Excellent book: very thought provoking and written in poetic style
By value seeker
This book is dense, deep, and thoughtful. It confronts many of the challenges that intelligent, well educated people have with the belief in G-d. It is also highly personal and shares the authors personal struggles with faith and how he resolves them. Not an easy read, but worth the effort. Tell your Rabbi to read it too!

Winnie-the-Pooh, by A. A. Milne

Happy 90th birthday, to one of the world's most beloved icons of children's literature, Winnie-the-Pooh!

Since 1926, Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends—Piglet, Owl, Tigger, and the ever doleful Eeyore—have endured as the unforgettable creations of A.A. Milne, who wrote this book for his son, Christopher Robin, and Ernest H. Shepard, who lovingly gave Pooh and his companions shape.

These characters and their stories are timeless treasures of childhood that continue to speak to all of us with the kind of freshness and heart that distinguishes true storytelling.

"Winnie-the-Pooh is a joy; full of solemn idiocies and the sort of jokes one weeps over helplessly, not even knowing why they are so funny, and with it all the real wit and tenderness which alone could create a priceless little masterpiece." Saturday Review, 1926

Replacing my beloved Winnie...
By Lexophelia
When I went away to college many years ago, my mother loaned my "Winnie-the-Pooh"—received on my fifth birthday—to a young co-worker to read to her children. It was never returned. I have been mourning ever since! The fact that this book had everything the original had, except the hardback cover, made it irresistible. I bought it! It did not disappoint. I saw the same dear pictures of the same beloved Pooh in the well-remembered interesting situations with his unique take on matters and his same friends and his companion, Christopher Robin. The book now has joined its mate, "The House at Pooh Corner." My bookcase is no longer missing something. Get this book and read it to your children or give it to them to read, as my mother did me. It cannot be replaced by the Disney Pooh. That Pooh is a whole different animal...trust me. Oh, and lend it to NO ONE. Get them one of their own!

Love, love, love this CD
By Mandie J.
My 5 year old son bought this with his own money after we read the book as a series of bedtime stories. The CD has become much-beloved by both children (and Mama). This IS an abridgment, which was disappointing at first, but the chapters which are included are well done.

We looked for The House At Pooh Corner this year at Christmas time, and were disappointed when we couldn't find it. I bought the Peter Dennis version of the second book instead, but we don't enjoy that one as much (but that's another review) so I'm looking for the BBC Audiobooks version of Pooh Corner again.

Great to Read to Your 2nd Grader
By Kat S
This is a great, classic book! I purchased it for my 2nd grader, and I think it is better as a read-aloud to your child book than one they just read themselves. There are many conversations with characters who have different voices, and it might be confusing to a child who was reading it alone (at least for the first time reading it). My child is not/has never been a Winnie the Pooh fan and was skeptical when I showed her this book, but by chapter 2 she was hooked. The illustrations add a lot for a child who is listening to you read. My child also liked the story about how the book came to be and the REAL Christopher Robin, which I told her just before we started reading this.

A cancer patient herself when she was writing the book, Sontag shows how the metaphors and myths surrounding certain illnesses, especially cancer, add greatly to the suffering of patients and often inhibit them from seeking proper treatment. By demystifying the fantasies surrounding cancer, Sontag shows cancer for what it is--just a disease. Cancer, she argues, is not a curse, not a punishment, certainly not an embarrassment and, it is highly curable, if good treatment is followed.

Almost a decade later, with the outbreak of a new, stigmatized disease replete with mystifications and punitive metaphors, Sontag wrote a sequel to Illness as Metaphor, extending the argument of the earlier book to the AIDS pandemic.

These two essays now published together, Illness as Metaphor and AIDS and Its Metaphors, have been translated into many languages and continue to have an enormous influence on the thinking of medical professionals and, above all, on the lives of many thousands of patients and caregivers.

From Publishers Weekly
"In Illness as Metaphor , Sontag argues that the myths and metaphors surrounding disease can kill by instilling shame and guilt in the sick, thus delaying them from seeking treatment," wrote PW. She sees, and discusses provocatively, a similar process at work in the case of AIDS.

Review
“Susan Sontag's Illness as Metaphor was the first to point out the accusatory side of the metaphors of empowerment that seek to enlist the patient's will to resist disease. It is largely as a result of her work that the how-to health books avoid the blame-ridden term 'cancer personality' and speak more soothingly of 'disease-producing lifestyles' . . . AIDS and Its Metaphors extends her critique of cancer metaphors to the metaphors of dread surrounding the AIDS virus. Taken together, the two essays are an exemplary demonstration of the power of the intellect in the face of the lethal metaphors of fear.” ―Michael Ignatieff, The New Republic

From the Publisher
Brimming with humane and original ideas about a disease and the modern condition, this classic essay and its sequel -- written 10 years later -- are compassionate exhortations and a liberating event. "Taken together, the two essays are an exemplary demonstration of the power of the intellect in the face of the lethal metaphors of fear." -- The Nation

But she makes great points about how we
By Bianca Muonekwu
I got this book for class. Sontag is a tough read. That's not an understatement. But she makes great points about how we, as society, stigmatize certain illnesses. I think it is a very eye-opening book, but is so much more effective when this book/essays can be discussed, especially in an academic setting. The four stars is just because I didn't choose to read this book on my own.

This book changed my life
By Carey
This is a quote from the book that I would consider its thesis statement:

'Theories that diseases are caused by mental states and can be cured by will power are always an index of how much is not understood about a disease.

Moreover, there is a peculiarly modern predilection for psychological explanations of disease...Psychologizing seems to provide control...over which people have no control. Psychological understanding undermines the 'reality' of a disease.'

Sontag traces, historically, the ways different diseases and the people who contracted them have been viewed. She spends time discussing tuberculars--waif-like, pale, romantic--and cancer patients--repressed, the 'cancer personality,' shame--then goes on to debunk these notions by stating that once the cause, cure, innoculation is found, the 'myth' or popular psychology of the disease no longer holds.

In this edition, in the final chapter about AIDS and its metaphors Sontag writes that she'd written the first part of the book (all but the AIDS chapter) while a cancer patient and in response to reactions she saw in fellow patients. She saw guilt and shame; and she saw these as impediments to people's treatments. For she knew she had an illness and she set about to cure it medically, in the best possible way, while others passively accepted the 'metaphor' handed to them and, thus, did less to help themselves best. She felt frustrated or saddened by their psychologizing and self-blame and wished to write to others that their physical illness is a physical illness and the best route to recovery is to think only of how to find the best medical treatment.

And she wrote this by demonstrating the history of myths that surrounded illnesses and the way these myths evaporated as soon as its true mechanism (the virus, or otherwise) was found.

Some holes in her argument can be found in the field of Health Psychology, which has proved that optimism generates faster post-operative recovery or a heartier immune system, among other 'psychological' correlates of disease to illness. Still we speak of a "type A" personality and a possibility of a heart attack, etc., which I believe is not entirely unfounded -- stress creates a drop in immune response and other health deficiencies.

However, I am a patient and a former psychotherapist. I was reared in psychology as others are toward priesthood. I grew up sent to therapists for any ills and was raised with the thought I be nothing but a therapist when an adult -- which I did become. Then I became diabled, from physical injury. My own disability is largely pain-related; the pain is severe and in locations that make it impossible to function. Much of my injury does not show up on contemporary tests -- EMG's, CAT scans, MRI's, bone scans, sonograms.

So I turn to psychology. I know I've got a physical injury. But if it can not be cured (and I go back to my original quote: that which is least understood, we psychologize), perhaps I am, in part, a cause of it. This had been a comforting notion to me: if I can do this to myeslf, I can also undo it. For me, psychologizing helped put me in the driver's seat.

Sontag at first put me in the driver's seat in a new, determined, knowing way. I know my injury is not something that is "in my head." At first, Sontag's argument was a weight off my shoulders, an eye-opener. I underlined the passage above: yes, that's right; they don't know what's wrong with me so they blame me. A doctor once said to me: "When I can't find anything wrong with someone I assume there is nothing wrong with her."

Sontag set me in motion. She went into motion, knowing cancer wasn't a word to whisper (remember when we whispered that 'c' word?), but something to pursue with a vengeance. Her book was liberating. I know I don't want to be sick, unable to do the things I want to, regardless of how neatly one can analyze my personality and show otherwise. This is physical.

Then reality. I've got sometihng and it isn't curable and it is debilitating. I am in doctors' offices all the time; fighting beaurocracy all the time. I wanted my psychologizing back. My security blanket had been removed with this "epiphany" of sorts. If it's not in my head, and I can't cure myself, and doctos can't cure me, I'm incurable. Her philosophy, then, became saddening.

I began to analyze her: perhaps she recovered so well because of her strong personality, her [psychological] strength. It's a chicken/egg question.

Sontag writes things that are clear and other things that can be argued. Overall, her essays have changed societal thought -- from Against Interpretation to On Photography to Illness as Metaphor and various others; she is brilliant and a powerfully good writer. Anyone who can make us look at something in a new way, make us think something through in a new way, is easily well-worth reading.

Anyone who is ill, particularly chronically, undiagnosed or misunderstood should read this book. Agree with it or not, but read it. Read others that say the opposite, read about your own illness, but read this book: I would call it mandatory.

The Gremlins, by Roald Dahl

Published in 1943 and long unavailable, Dark Horse Books is proud to present this landmark book from the author of such beloved tales as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach and Matilda. Digitally restored, this remarkable presentation of Dahl's classic story, lavishly illustrated by the artists of the Walt Disney Studios, will delight readers of all ages! The Gremlins is the story of Gus, a British World War II fighter pilot, who during the Battle of Britain turned to look out on the wing of his plane only to see an amazing sight: a little man, no more than six inches tall with horns growing from his head, drilling a hole in the plane's wing. Gus was the first man to ever see a Gremlin, and what happened after that would change the war, and the world, forever. Bought by Walt Disney to be produced as an animated motion picture (and considered to be the first story featuring the mythical airplane sabotaging creatures known as Gremlins), the project was ultimately shelved and is reprinted here for the first time in over 60 years.

Great reprint of a classic story and a great way to introduce kids to WWII.
By Denise E.
The Gremlins is a fun, but forgotten WWII themed kids book that almost became a motion picture. This reprint has a nice section discussing the book itself and the story behind the motion picture.

A long out of print WWII Children's Classic
By SpoonerandForker
World War II Royal Air Force folklore about the mischievous Gremlins who caused mechanical malfunctions in airplanes and how to make friends with them. A wonderful children's story by Roald Dahl. Disney bought the rights but unfortunately never produced the movie. Now you don't have to spend $200 to get a copy, because the original copyright problems between Disney and the British Air Ministry have been cleared up and it has finally been reprinted with all of the original artwork. A true Children's Classic.

The Gremlins
By Rusty
I grew up with this book and have always had a soft spot for it. Roald Dahl has given us some pretty fantastic stories and this, being his first, is very special. The setting of the Second World War and the problems of the RAF fighter pilots is given a unique twist by using these fictional beings. Their antics are both humorous and serious. "War is hell" but with a twisted smile here. Dahl has kept his "twist" through out most of his writings so it's fun to see the beginning. The Disney characters are timely and representative of the story, I'm especially fond of the Fifinellas with their curly horns and demure manner. The Widgets are cute too. The book is wonderful for both children and adults. Enjoy!!

Praise for the first edition:No other anthology so fully incorporates views from African American women as well as men, workers as well as intellectuals, and individuals from diverse political perspectives. (Johnnetta B. Cole, president emerita of Spelman and Bennett Colleges)

Praise for the first edition:There is no comparable volume that can match the comprehensive coverage in this first, single-volume documentary history of black thought. . . . Essential reading. (George M. Fredrickson, Stanford University)

Praise for the first edition:A remarkably broad compilation of the signal primary sources through which black people articulated both their always shifting and always various definitions of what, precisely, a black identity is, as well as the most efficacious methods through which to achieve our freedom. Marable and Mullings have produced a work indispensable to the field of African-American Studies. (Henry Louis Gates Jr., Harvard University)

Praise for the first edition:A readable, comprehensive, fascinating and thick anthology of African American documents that are as gripping as they are informative. Powerful, dramatic, hard to put down, this comprehensive volume of both significant leaders and ordinary people with highly perceptive views, should find a place in many college courses. (Afro Times)

Praise for the first edition:The editors make the crucial argument that the themes of reform, resistance, and renewal formed the cultural and social matrix of black consciousness, community, and public discourse. They identify the key debates in the black community throughout American history and provide an analytical framework of the major tendencies. They also make a forceful argument for making the issue of gender a central one throughout this important volume. (Race Relations Abstracts)

Praise for the first edition:It is an excellent work of scholarship and a reference that belongs in the homes of all Black Americans. (Www.Bookviews.Com)

Praise for the first edition:Douglas and Malcolm X are joined by lesser-known names in this survey of how individual actions formed into a movement. Oral testimonies, interviews, and essays blend in an important coverage. (The Bookwatch)

Praise for the first edition:This unique and groundbreaking volume captures the struggle and hope persistent in the movement for social justice. (Orlando Times)

Praise for the first edition:An essential reference: instructive, evocative, surprising, enraging, painful, depressing―but ultimately exhilarating. (Kirkus)

This is a fantastic book and wonderful resource for students and instructors. Well done! (Julie Lewis, De Anza College)

This version of the ebook has some sections missing. Section 3 / Article #9 "Black workers in the Great Depression" has been omitted & replaced with pages that say, "This page is intentionally left blank." What's the solution to gain access to this and other missing articles?

Gone in a Heartbeat: A Physician's Search for True Healing, by Dr. Neil Spector

Dr. Neil Spector, one of the nation’s top oncologists, led a charmed life. He was educated at prestigious universities, trained at top medical centers, and had married the woman of his dreams. It seemed too perfect. And it was. In 1994, it all came crashing down. He and his wife lost two unborn children. And a mysterious illness brought him to the brink of death. In his compelling memoir, Gone in a Heartbeat, Dr. Spector describes in great detail how he was misdiagnosed and, despite being a medical insider, was often discounted by his fellow physicians. As he recounts his own unorthodox approach to medicine and physician/patient relationships, Dr. Spector encourages readers to never surrender their power to a third party. He tells of courageous patients who served as role models, he concedes that doctors do a disservice to patients when “we treat them like statistics,” and he advocates for educated patients who can make informed decisions collaboratively and not simply follow instructions. In Dr. Spector’s words: “To recognize that we are in control of our own bodies and destinies can be a powerful step toward true healing.” Readers of Gone in a Heartbeat will never view the medical profession the same again.

Should be required reading for all health professionals
    By Ginny D. Dudek
This book is incredible! I’ve been a nurse for 45 years, and this story of hope and healing should be required reading for all health professionals.

As a person with Lyme and coinfections, I love how Dr. Spector addresses the complex CDC testing issue: don't ignore the patient, their symptoms and use common sense. Even the CDC says that Lyme is a clinical diagnosis, so patients should not have to move mountains to find a doctor to appropriately treat late diagnosis Lyme disease. Health care providers are being forced to spend less and less time with patients, and relying more and more on test results, which can’t give them a clear clinical picture of what is going on.

I loved his poems, interspersed throughout the book, that describe the miracles and love that were occurring all around him. The search for meaning, when faced with chronic illness opens doors to our spiritual nature. Someone described aspects of this book as “quirky”. That comment reminds me of the quote by Nietzsche “And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music”. Dr. Spector heard the music of his soul and communicates it in a very powerful and uplifting way.

I’m going to buy several more copies, one for a friend that starts medical school in September. Another will be for the medical center director where I took my husband to the ER, when my son was inpatient recovering from surgery. The ER physician would not wait three minutes for me to return from my son’s room to let me be present when he tactlessly told my husband he had cancer. A third copy will go to my ‘fired’ medical group practice that diagnosed me with lymphoma, based on a CT scan, and overlooked the fever of 103 that I ran for 7 days while on antibiotics, never considering an infectious source for my illness. I count my blessings that I had a MVA when I had heart block from Lyme carditis, and needed bone surgery, requiring IV antibiotics, reversing my heart block early in the course of my infection. Thankfully, we’ve found very skilled and caring physicians, and received excellent care for cancer and Lyme.

Dr. Spector’s memoir stresses: never give up hope, follow your intuition and be here now. Learning through his experience is a lot easier than learning it through a broken heart.

One person at a time, one heart beat at a time...one page at a time.
    By MentorEngine
Wow, what a read! I rate this the full five stars for many reasons. First, because of my attention deficit, I am not one to read a book start-to-finish in one sitting. Not only did I read Gone in a Heartbeat: A Physician's Search for Healing all in one sitting, but I started it before bed and suddenly found it was 6 a.m. and I hadn't noticed the time go by. Book was read.

More than a memoir, Dr. Spector’s book includes chapter breaks with beautiful poems—poems that would make excellent reading in and of themselves if compiled separately—also written by Dr. Spector during his pre-transplant journey. Vivid details of his symptoms, medical experiences, close encounters with his own death, and memories of holding the hands of patients as they leave this life all facilitate a vital awareness of . . .

    1. The myriad complex and even life-threatening symptoms and physical ailments caretakers can be experiencing while caring for their patients, yet completely unknown to the patients and their families.
    2. The ever present need to be our own health advocates and go with our inner sense of what may or may not be happening with our individual bodies.
    3. The health system’s emphasis on process rather than on people—so that mindful attention must be focused on each patient’s unique symptoms and physical reactions to disease and illness.
    4. The critical importance of giving thoughtful analysis to our treatment plans while not necessarily subscribing to any single practitioner’s gospel of how to proceed with our health care.
    5. Treasuring the moment we have now and opening our hearts to those we love and who love us.

The book gives us intellectual, emotional, and spiritual lessons about medicine, life, parenthood, and love. It explores the tension between existing both as a fragile human being and as what seems at times like a super-humanly strong being. Some of us even seem to share a divinely inspired strength, beautifully rolling out before us, as it does in this true story.

Dr. Spector has lived nearly 60 years with not one but two precious hearts (the second of which his daughter actually named “heavenly precious”). Neil Spector, MD, generously shares that heart of gold with all of us, as he includes us in his story by allowing us to read it.

It is clear by the end of the first chapter that this story is ultimately not solely about Dr. Spector. We do learn intimate details of his years of struggle and misery with undiagnosed Lyme’s Disease, followed by his fight to survive long enough to receive another heart. However, his real subject is each of us who share triumph and defeat on a daily basis.

He writes of all those whose hearts deserve to be called "precious," both because of what they do for us, and for what they have done and can do for the world at large. It happens just one person at a time, one heart beat at a time, just as it has for Dr. Spector in every life he has ever touched. It also happens for those of us lucky enough to read his marvelously thoughtful and thought-provoking book—one page at a time.

Fabulous book depicting the harsh realities of Lyme disease and the toll it takes on it's victims.
    By Cindy Casey
As a former heart transplant nurse and a Chronic Lyme patient myself I loved this book. I think the world has to wake up to very real epidemic that is upon us with Lyme disease currently going undiagnosed and misunderstood by mainstream medicine. I wonder now how many of my "idiopathic" dilated cardiomyopathy patients actually had Lyme disease. There are no accurate tests to diagnose this disease so unfortunately far too many lives have been lost. Bravo to Dr. Neil Spector for writing this incredible book! The CDC has to wake up to this problem!

    Amazon.com Review
Writing for the screen is quirky business. A writer must labor meticulously over his or her prose, yet very little of that prose is ever heard by filmgoers. The few words that do reach the audience, in the form of the characters' dialogue, are, according to Robert McKee, best left to last in the writing process. ("As Alfred Hitchcock once remarked, 'When the screenplay has been written and the dialogue has been added, we're ready to shoot.' ") In Story, McKee puts into book form what he has been teaching screenwriters for years in his seminar on story structure, which is considered by many to be a prerequisite to the film biz. (The long list of film and television projects that McKee's students have written, directed, or produced includes Air Force One, The Deer Hunter, E.R., A Fish Called Wanda, Forrest Gump, NYPD Blue, and Sleepless in Seattle.) Legions of writers flock to Hollywood in search of easy money, calculating the best way to get rich quick. This book is not for them. McKee is passionate about the art of screenwriting. "No one needs yet another recipe book on how to reheat Hollywood leftovers," he writes. "We need a rediscovery of the underlying tenets of our art, the guiding principles that liberate talent." Story is a true path to just such a rediscovery. In it, McKee offers so much sound advice, drawing from sources as wide ranging as Aristotle and Casablanca, Stanislavski and Chinatown, that it is impossible not to come away feeling immeasurably better equipped to write a screenplay and infinitely more inspired to write a brilliant one.--Jane Steinberg

Great for Some; Good for Most (with some caution)
    By C. Maka
For me _Story_ by Robert McKee is an incredibly useful book in terms of analyzing stories after the fact. If you read a popular, well-crafted book or view a movie or TV show with those qualities and want to understand how it works, what makes it tick, you would be hard pressed to find a better book, and you should just order this book now -- you're in for a treat.

If you're an aspiring writer, _Story_ may be extremely helpful for you (as evidenced by the many glowing reviews here), but it might also be problematic in ways you don't expect. It's from this perspective that I'm writing this review. Writing fiction is an incredibly personal experience, so to be clear I'm not saying that people who love this book as a writing how-to are wrong. I think if you have a certain mindset or approach to writing, this book will be extremely helpful to you. But if you don't, you may want to approach _Story_ with some caution (which I'll explain in a minute).

Some fiction writers employ a very methodical, intellectual approach, putting stories together like watchmakers carefully constructing a complex timepiece, creating detailed outlines first and using them as blueprints to build their stories. This is a completely valid way to work -- in fact, I'm envious of such writers and wish it worked for me. If you already know that you are this sort of writer, you should just order _Story_ right now, because you almost certainly are gonna love it and find it incredibly useful.

Some writers employ a more organic, intuitive approach, where creating a story is an unstructured process of discovery (the so-called "pantsers", because they work from "the seat of their pants"). In my view this is also a perfectly valid way to work, not inherently better or worse than being a dedicated outliner. If you know that you're this sort of writer, you may find _Story_ intellectually compelling (because it surely is), but it might also mess with your head (see below).

I personally am neither a hardcore outliner nor a committed pantser. I am finding that I produce my best, most satisfying work when I bounce back and forth between the two approaches. I can't go full organic because I get lost in the work and find that I constantly have 16 ideas that I can't choose between, and each one of those leads to 16 other ideas, and so on. On the other hand, for me employing a rigorous outlining approach is too intellect-driven. I feel I lose the creative spark and fascination that made me want to write the story in the fist place. Instead, deliberately or not, I find myself "solving" my story structure like a sudoku puzzle, overtaken with concern about hitting the right points in the right way at the right time, and things like, losing control of my story that way.

Which brings me back to _Story_. As someone else here said, McKee isn't telling you, "These are rules! You must follow them!" He's describing principles of storytelling he's developed over years and years of experience and analysis. The thing is, his approach is extremely methodical and intellect-driven, it has a gravity that's going to pull you in that direction. It's so intellectually appealing it's like your brain can't let go of it. Like I said earlier, if your writing mindset and approach are on the same wavelength as what McKee teaches, this is gonna be awesome for you and you're going to love it. If you're not, this can really mess with your head and your writing for a bit.

That said, this is good material even for someone like me, and I am glad I read it. There are useful ideas here, and it's good to be aware of them even if you're not going to go about building stories the way McKee teaches. But if you go about putting McKee's tools into practice and it just doesn't work for you, or you're simply not that kind of writer to begin with, don't panic if it feels like your brain has been taken over by McKee for a while. :-) This too shall pass, and afterwards you will probably feel like you have learned things that will be useful to you at some point down the road.

Buy it, toss the cover and read every chapter twice!
    By Daniel Reed
I have two copies of "Story" to ensure it is always nearby.

Out of a dozen or so books on writing, I found McKee's "Story" thoroughly enlightening.

It can be a challenge to comprehend in places - but worth the extra effort!
In terms of characters driving narrative, review chapter 7 and examine writing w/in "the gap".

I found it easier to grasp McKee by writing one paragraph summaries of each chapter as I progressed.
It may be helpful to think of each chapter as a separate vignette of knowledge.
    I suggest reading the chapters in this order: 1-3, 8, 4, 7, 5-6, 15, 9, 10-11, 14, 18, 12-13, 16-17
(the above order was suggested to me in fact by L.S.)

Also, try reading "Save the Cat", contrast/compare w/ "Story" and refer to the "Bible" by Trottier.

On a side note, the slip cover is absolutely awful. Throw it away.
The hardcover book w/out the slip cover is a tasteful blue-purple w/ STORY and McKee in gold print.

    Not just for screenwriters.
    By T. Threadgill
I'm a fiction writer and found this to be an excellent resource. There's very little in here that doesn't apply to ALL writing. I'd recommend reading through a simpler book first (i.e., James Scott Bell's "Plot and Structure"). If you're serious about your writing, read this book!
