Another View

As a great classic 'The Oresteia' by Aeschylus merits a full 5 stars. I will, however, question Aeschylus logic and motive in creating this play. Aeschylus was an Athenian who participated in the war with Persia and stated that he fought in the battle on the plain of Marathon. He is a patriot who promotes the glory and happy existence of Athens, the City of Athena.

At the same time, the basic concept for this play is drawn from the Odyssey. In Homer's great work Odysseus [Ulysses] learns that Agammemnon, following the destruction of Troy, manages to successfully get home to Mycenae. He arrives with much loot and with his sexual slave, Cassandra, recently princess of Troy. Agammemnon receives quite a homecoming. He and Cassandra are slaughtered by Agammemnon's wife, Clytaemnestra, and her lover, Aegisthus. The motive for the killings are apparently multiple. Clytaemnestra is quite understandably outraged that Agammemnon, immediately prior to sailing away to Troy, sacrificed their daughter, Iphigeneia, for favorable winds. Clytaemnestra, perhaps in revenge, takes a lover and, along with him, plots Agammemnon's death. When Agammemnon actually does arrive, another motive arrives in the form of helpless Cassandra. Paradoxically, Clytaemnestra seems to be jealous. Another stated motive is power. Both Aegisthus and Clytemnestra supposedly want to be King and Queen of Mycenae--BUT--Clytemnestra is already Queen so this can't be her motive.

She and her lover, Aegisthus, do both Agammemnon and Cassandra to death. Clytaemnestra's son by Agammemnon, Orestes, complicit with his sister, Electra, and egged on by the God, Apollo, kill both mother and lover.

These are the bare bones of the story as told to Odysseus. Aeschylus, himself, can't deviate from the 'facts' as delivered in the Odyssey because virtually everyone in the Greek World knows the story by heart. Aeschylus, quite aware of the complexities and ironies of the situation, decides to use the story for his own purposes but it is a bit of a stretch. Interestingly, In Aeschylus' Play, Clytaemnestra facing death at the hands of her own son and arguing for her life, never once uses her strongest argument i.e. that Agammemnon had slaughtered Iphigeneia, Orestes' own sister. Later, when guilt-plagued [Furies-attacked] Orestes is tried for matricide in a trial presided over by Athena--including 10 wise Athenian judges--the prosecuting Furies don't once use their strongest prosecutorial point which is, again, Agammemnon's sacrifice of Iphigeneia.

Instead, Apollo, working for the defense, says that he ordered/influenced Orestes to perform the act, therefore Orestes is innocent. Athena, who'd showed marked preference for the Greeks led by Agammemnon on the Plains of Troy, throws in her vote in favor of Orestes which apparently creates a 50-50 split, which by Athenian Law means that Orestes is freed of the Furies curse. This may be a minor point but with Athena acting as an 11th Juror there can be no 50-50 split. The play ends with Athena convincing the Furies to be 'good' and to bring only happiness to Athens. There is a lyrical paen to the benefit of glorious Athens.

Several problems: There is a 50-50 split, therefore half of the judges regard Orestes as a criminal and matricide. An extension of this is that these jurors recognize the specious nature of the defense argument. Also, Cassandra, one of the more symphathetic figures of the Trojan War and, arguably, the most sympathetic figure of this play, is also murdered. Cassandra is entirely guiltless of any crime yet her murder is never laid at Clytaemnestra's feet. Apparently the murder of a slave, even a slave of Blood Royal, isn't regarded as much of a crime. Agammemnon, however, actually is guilty of a 'crime' against Clytaemnestra by sacrificing their daughter. On the other hand, Agammemnon's defense must surely be that it was a necessary sacrifice to the benefit of the Gods and the Gods, themselves, would probably praise rather than condemn Agammemnon for this otherwise loathesome act. At the same time, Clytaemnestra does loathe Agammemnon for it and this hatred likely directs her hand. This fact is lightly skimmed over in the play. In a sense, Orestes is not only a matricide but, in killing his mother, is indirectly complicit in his own sister's sacrifice. All this is skimmed over although neither Aeschylus nor his audience can be ignorant of these facts.

I'll repeat. The major crime committed here is the murder of Cassandra, not Agammemnon or Clytemnestra. Either because of custom or because facts can be inconvenient, Aeschylus glosses over this almost entirely.

In this light, 'The Orestia', for all its strength and beauty, becomes no more than a vehicle for Athenian propaganda. It wasn't enough. Fifty years later Athens was occupied by triumphant Spartans.

Classic for Good Reasons

The parameters of a standard mystery novel review simply do not fit. Aeschylus has been a classic for well over 2500 years. There are good reasons. "The Libation Bearers", while less well-known than "Agamemnon" is filled with the same significance and intent; and is a necessary link to "The Eumenides" with its wonderfully satisfying ending.

Great read!

This is actually a really good read! I got this for a college assignment so I expected it to be somewhat boring but it really held my interest. The actual scene part of the book is a bit hard to understand but they give a translated story version at the beginning that really clears up any confusion.

The gold standard of vocabulary books.

I collect books in this genre in the off-chance somebody will come up with something worthwhile I find to be new or challenging.
This book is the best of its kind I've found.
Some vocabulary books begin with the assumption that you are 13 years-old and you may have some gaps in your vocabulary.
Some claim 3,000 words and add in myrmidon, terpsichorean, sciamachy, and susirrus none of which you'll ever hear or have occasion to use.
This book includes over 1,100 worthwhile words every adult should know and put to good use.

Pure pusillanimous pleasure...

Now, for Mr. Bly to put out a tome reflecting how to actually improve or at least sound like you had improved your educational achievements vis a vis your audibly visible vocabulary is a short effort, given his regular prodigy at all this "schtuff".

That he's extended opinion to 1200 of his favorite culprits is additionally laudatory, since over-cranked tech educations will often not even provide the necessary fast perusal of all things written, and is therefore Most Appreciated.

Finally a godsend to parents -- at least of boys -- that create a perfect, written down "wage against the machine" guideline from which to bet, cajole, plead, embarass, objectivize and one's male offspring.
If you can't make a good daily or weekly wager from this material, they oughta make sure you never get to land in Vegas again.

Just think, at a $1 or more per word, your children may get out of a public school education with minimal cost... they [and you, too, let's be sure...] will slide through english and all sorts of the other reasonably language-oriented courses for years -- the novelty of being an intellectual stud will carry them onto "real" pedagogic wonders... all for $20. I am definitely one of "those people" who enjoy reading dictionaries

I am definitely one of "those people" who enjoy reading dictionaries. Well, maybe not dictionaries per se, but books that help me expand my vocabulary.

I have older brothers and loved to trick me with wordplay back in the day. Two still try to do it, but they have to do something to try and make themselves feel superior...which usually means working hard at making others feel inferior. So it was a matter of self-preservation growing up.

Now it is nice to be able to turn a phrase in an unusual way...not to make anyone feel uneducated, but rather to keep my mind fresh.

This is a nice quick resource to choose from. While dictionary.com and thesaurus.com is undoubtedly more in depth, when working away from the web, having a resource like this is useful.

About the Author
Lucia Caycedo Garner is from Colombia. She taught language and pedagogy courses for more than thirty years at the University of Wisconsin, Madison before her retirement. She is the author of IMÁGENES, CLARO QUE SÍ! FUENTES: CONVERSACIÓN Y GRAMÁTICA, FUENTES: LITERATURA Y REDACCIÓN, and EN PAREJAS 1, 2, 3 Y 4. She was an ACTFL OPI tester and trainer. She was a frequent presenter at the local, state, and national levels. She was also a contributor to the University of Wisconsin Spanish Placement Exam.

Debbie Rusch has been the coordinator of Elementary Spanish at Boston College since 1990. She is the author of IMÁGENES, CLARO QUE Si!, ANÍMATE, FUENTES: CONVERSACIÓN Y GRAMÁTICA, and EN PAREJAS 1, 2, 3 Y 4. At Boston College she has taught pedagogy courses. She has been an instructor of Spanish for more than 35 years and has also taught English as a Foreign Language in Spain, where she lived for more than six years. does NOT include answer key

This books is actually one of the better foreign language books I've used.

But please note: this book does NOT contain the answer key for the activities.

The "partial edition" that only covers the first couple chapters DOES include the answer key in the back.

So if your school/university bookstore offers the partial edition(I can't find it on Amazon), take that into consideration.

***I have contacted the publisher, and they were willing to send me an answer key. So this might be an option for you as well.***

This book was great, as it should have been since I bought it brand new. HOWEVER, this book does not come with the access code. Which is absolutely absurd. If I buy something brand new, it should come with the code. And if it is not going to come with the code, advertise that better, so people understand what they are really buying.

About the Author
Jerry Tennant, MD, MD(H), PScD is an awarded ophthalmologist that performed most of the research for the company VISX to get approval for its laser that is used in LASIK surgery. In the process, he inhaled viruses released by the laser and developed encephalitis. Traditional medicine had no cure so he began to look for ways to cure himself. This led him to understand the role of voltage in the body. By restoring the voltage in his brain, he recovered. He has shared the methods for recovery from chronic diseases by restoring voltage in his series of books Healing is Voltage. This book shows that acupuncture meridians are actually stacks of muscle batteries that provide the voltage for each organ to function and to keep organs repaired.

There truly is no other book like it

I have a rather full library of books on health as I have sought to understand a physical problem i have suffered for 10 years that is now finally resolving. In my journey few books have had as much real solid information as this one. I congratulate the author, not only for a well written book, but for the immense about of original research reported to us. Dr. Tennant has defined and codified the use of electricity in the body. He has mapped the "wiring" to all body parts and has provided a system of treatment to the reader that can restore health. He has unified the flows of acupuncture, the chakras and the nervous system. There truly is no other book like it.

The book is now in it's third iteration. Much was added between the 2nd and 3rd publishing. For example the chapter on fulvic acid.

I will state that I have been using an electrical energy device for about 3 years, and if I had not had it, I would hate to contemplate the condition I would be in without it. No, it is not the Biomodulator (his energy device) and I do not mention what it is because I do not want to taint or take away from this review by directing attention elsewhere. The point is, the use of electrons and frequency are vital elements of healing and living fully. Dr. Tennant had gifted us with a treasure in this book. Anyone who wants to understand the use of electrons and frequency in the body will not be disappointed.

Great insight work by Tennant in joining the dots to understand and perform acupuncture from an electro magnetic perspective. A must read and a suitable companion book to "The Body Electric: Electromagnetism And The Foundation Of Life" by Robert Becker and Gary Selden.

I have followed Dr Tennant for a long time. He has a truly amazing grasp on how the body really works. Our health has improved because of what we have learned from him. So glad he wrote this book. I highly recommend it!

Norberg-Hodge first went to Ladakh in 1975 and has spent six months there every year since. This slim volume is her soapbox to air her views of how Ladakh should be. Part 1 is the romantic, idealized Shangri-la where everyone is happy and contented. Then she portrays Ladakh after the tourist invasions and economic development. Next is a tirade against multinational corporations that are responsible for all the world's problems (strange, since India banned most international companies 20 years ago). Finally, Norberg-Hodge describes her work in establishing local organizations to introduce local-level, low-capital inputs. A popular and sensitive introduction to Ladakh is needed, but this is not it. Not recommended.

Informative & Interesting

I read this book before going to Ladakh in 2007 & found it to have been informative & it made me seek out projects that were working well.
It was a success story of saving the environments, the landscape, teaching the local people & developing projects.
I really hope these projects are in effect as I write. The author & these programs may have learned from the damage which has been done to Nepal & tourism. Ladakh was opened to outsiders later than Nepal. It had not become like Bhutan which is so exclusive, it has changed the people in another way. Only the rich can afford to visit Bhutan and they haven't treated the Nepalese who lived in Bhutan, badly, while being so holy about "their" land and country.
Recommend the book.

Where it's really at in Ladakh--and here

I have been to Ladakh a couple of times, staying in monasteries and in local houses. This book gives an excellent deep-level description of the very special culture there, explaining why it is so very attractive, why it is severely under threat, and why we should care. Although sometimes it's a bit over the top in the analysis of the ills of Western capitalism, every argument is well-reasoned and carefully presented. Highly recommended for people who care about the future of our own society, and of our planet.
