About the Author
Lisa McCartney, BAAS, CPhT, PhTR, is the department chair for the ASHP Accredited pharmacy technician program at Austin Community College. She has been educating pharmacy technicians since 1999. Lisa has worked as a pharmacy technician for over 30 years. She is a subject matter expert in the area of sterile compounding and aseptic technique, and has been an ACPE certified instructor in sterile product preparation and aseptic technique since 1997. Lisa has a wide range of pharmacy experience, including the community, hospital, and oncology pharmacy settings. She became a PTCB certified pharmacy technician in 1995 and has been registered with the State of Texas since 2005. Lisa received the 2012 Roy Kemp award from the Pharmacy Technician Educator's Council. Lisa is the author of the EMC/Paradigm book, Sterile Compounding and Aseptic Technique: Concepts, Training, and Assessment for Pharmacy Technicians.

I don't think I like this book as much as the other Pharm Tech ...

I don't think I like this book as much as the other Pharm Tech books I've had to get for my classes. The index is just not very comprehensive feeling and it's ruddy hard to find things in it if you don't remember almost exactly where you read it the first time around. Sure, the writing is fairly straight-forward, but there's only so much that can help make up for basic lack of clear organization when it comes to things like the index/glossary and the appendix.

As a pretty apprehensive and therefore largely ineffective negotiator I thoroughly appreciated this book for three reasons. The first is the comforting realization that if you don't like negotiating it turns out you are not alone. Most people are anxious about conflict and negotiating (in all walks of life) and Movius does a good job humanizing and normalizing this shared condition and offers practical and empowering advice about how to reduce stress and gain more confidence. Secondly, Movius makes it clear that we can all get better at negotiations...especially if we practice. He provides a number of very useful strategies and tactics to help approach different negotiation situations and gently reminds us that they will be especially useful and helpful if we take the time to practice with teammates or friends in advance. Finally, Movius shares valuable insights about resolving conflict in personal relationships in his chapter on Friends and Family. All the situations he describes are remarkably familiar and his recommended antidotes, as is true of much of the book, are a calming combination of Movius' deep knowledge of social science, vast personal experience and good common sense.

Clarity, at last.

With patience, wisdom, and self-deprecating humor, Dr. Hal Movius has written a book that clearly illuminates a path into and through conflict. As Winston Churchill once said, "If you're going through hell, keep going." Dr. Movius has given me the tools to keep going instead of my usual pattern of getting stuck, or simply cowering in the face of conflict and dispute. Now I have useable tools, and a guidebook should I forget my way. Thank you for leading the way, Hal Movius, flashlight in hand, through the murky waters of conflict and negotiations.

I highly recommend the book as a must read for anyone wanting to build their competence and confidence in dealing with conflict and negotiating better outcomes. It provides cutting edge insight, guidance and strategies, backed by decades of research, to provide an evidence based approach to dealing with conflicts with more confidence. Useful summary of software testing strategies

Every professional and commercial software development organization spends a great deal of time in the testing and validation of their software. The testing process, driven either by legal or financial requirements, can be expensive and may thwart the planned deployment of the application. Many studies indicate that the testing process can even take three times as long as the actual coding itself. Indeed, software development done under the ISO 9000 or FDA auspices can be extremely time intensive.
This book gives a lengthy and fairly comprehensive overview of software testing that emphasizes formal models for testing. In the introduction, the author gives a general overview of the testing process and the reasons and goals for testing. He carefully distinguishes between testing and debugging, and advocates these as separate activities. Testing according to the author is done to find bugs; whereas debugging is done to find the origin of the bugs and fix them. The author characterizes testing as either functional or structural. Functional testing treats the program from the user's point of view, with inputs given to the program, and then the outputs are checked for conformance to a specified reference. Structural testing examines how the program is implemented, in terms of programming style, design, etc. The notion of an oracle is defined as any program or process that specifies the expected outcome of a collection of tests. The author clearly identifies and characterizes the different types of tests that arise in development organizations, such as unit testing, regression testing, stress testing, and integration testing.
In chapter 2, the author classifies the different types of bugs that could arise in program development. Bugs are classified according to functional, structural, data, coding, system, and design and test bugs. He stresses the need to not have a religious attitude about bugs, namely that all software will have them to some degree, and therefore it is the quality measure of the software that is important in deploying the application. If a minor bug requires a major software rewrite for example, it would not be advantageous to fix this bug.
Chapter 3 takes up the notion of path testing, which, according to the author, is based on the use of the program's flow control. The tester selects a set of test paths through the program with the goal of executing every statement and branch of the program at least once. The author summarizes well the flowgraph and process block techniques used to implement path testing.
In chapter 4, the author introduces the concept of a transaction flow as a representation of a system's processing. The flowgraphs developed in chapter 3 are used here to create a transaction flowgraph for functional testing. The transaction flow representation gives a way to model the system's behavior. The author's treatment here is very detailed, and he gives several useful tips on how to conduct this kind of testing.
The next chapter covers the topic of data-flow testing, where again flowgraphs are used, but this time the focus is on exploring the things that can happen to data. Data objects should be initialized prior to program execution, and selecting paths to insure this is the goal of data testing. The author does a good job of defining and characterizing data anomalies, and the strategies employed in static and dynamic anomaly detection. This is followed by a good overview of domain testing in chapter 6. This kind of testing, more mathematical in nature than others, attempts to test whether the inputs to programs are fulfilling some prior classification or specification. The author uses concepts from vector spaces and convex geometry to describe domain testing.
In chapter 7, several attempts are discussed to quantify program complexity, such as Halstead's metrics and token counts. This chapter is somewhat more theoretical at first glance, but a lot of these ideas have found practical application in development, particularly the measures for subroutine nesting. This is followed in the next two chapters by more abstract discussion involving paths, regular expression, and syntax testing. The discussion however is useful, for it trains the reader about how to think about a program in more general, linguistic terms. Such thinking is always useful when attempting to show a particular program is acting in ways other than that which it was designed for.
Logic-based testing, via Boolean algebra, is the topic of chapter 10. The author uses Karnaugh-Veitch charts to reduce the algebraic manipulations to a useful graphical representation. Finite-state machines, so useful in all areas of software engineering, are the topic of chapter 11. The concepts are presented very effectively by the author, and the reader should take away an appreciation of how these constructions are employed in software testing.
The next chapter reads like one straight out of a book on discrete geometry, wherein graph matrices are employed to give matrix representations in software. Linked lists are used to represent the graphs in a computer, and it is shown how testing problems can be represented as a graph problem.
The last chapter discusses how to implement software testing based on the strategies discussed in the book. The three-phase test scenario is described, namely unit, integration, and system testing. An overview of commercial testing tools is also given, with CASE mentioned, but the author chooses not to review the actual packages, citing the dynamic nature of the commercial situation. However he does give a useful discussion of the different characteristics of current testing tools.

testing. This 549-page book covers nearly every aspect of
the process of finding errors in computer programs, moving
from basic definitions and terminology through detailed and
easy-to-understand explanations of most testing strategies
in use today, finishing with a chapter on implementing
testing strategies in a development organization.

This book is written with the practitioner in mind, but
can equally well be used by students in software engineering
curriculums. It presents both theory and practice in a
thorough and clear manner, illustrating both concepts
and practical techinqes with numerous realistic examples.

All in all, in this reviewers mind, this is a very good
book on software testing, in particular for the active
practicioner, but could definitely be used by students of
software engineering.

I like the view

I am not an accountant. But that did not prevent me from desiring to understand the accounting system. Accounting is everywhere - I use it currently simply to classify transactions and use data for financial management decisions in regards to my own household. But If you have ever tried reading books on accounting it is very hard to see how the functions work with each other - big picture. This book helped me understand the challenges of various functions such as accounts payable and their interrelations. I gained valuable insight into this field through Steven's experience.

Excellent for accounting managers, well rounded

I am a supervisor for an AP office and work closely with our receivables dept. I just got this book today and have read the first 2 chapters. I've already made notes of some key points of implementing new "best practices". This seems to be a very well rounded book, covering AP, receivables, payroll and more. Each "best practice" has icons depecting cost/time investment to implement. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone in the accounting field looking for some new ideas or to revamp some procedures.

About the Author
Maximilian Lackner earned his Master's Degree in Physical and Analytical Chemistry, followed by a PhD degree from the Vienna University of Technology, Austria. He also obtained a postgraduate business degree from Johannes Kepler University, Austria. He was a postdoc at Lund Institute of Technology, Sweden. His main research interest is the use of lasers in chemistry. He is the founder of the company ProcessEng Engineering GmbH and serves on the advisory board of the Association of German Engineers.

Franz Winter is group leader and Head of the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Chemical Engineering at High Temperatures at the Vienna University of Technology. He obtained his academic degrees from the Vienna University of Technology and has specialized on combustion and high temperature reaction kinetics. He has authored more than 300 scientific publications. He is chairman and reviewer on various scientific and technical advisory boards and an active member of the Combustion Institute.

Avinash Kumar Agarwal is Associate Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. He obtained his PhD degree from the Center for Energy Studies at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Engine Research Center at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA.

Excellent Intro to Marx's Marxism

This book is an excellent introduction to Marx’s thought, whether for class assignment or general reading. However, it is not flawless. First, what makes it excellent? As Eagleton observes, Marx is a much “travestied” thinker. (239) Perhaps the most regrettable travesty is the widespread misrepresentation of Marx as an angry, heartless, malevolent determinist, who wants to violently impose a cruel, totalitarian communist system on the world. In ten short, readable chapters, Eagleton addresses the most common and egregious misrepresentations and misconceptions about Marx’s Marxism.

Very much to the contrary of the demonizing propaganda, Eagleton shows that Marx was a humanist with a big heart who was driven by outrage over the way the mass of humanity is being ruthlessly exploited and kept ignorant about its own nature. Marx agreed with Aristotle that man is a political animal. Beyond the Great Greek, Marx condemned the way in which people were being prevented from realizing their true nature. As political animals, people need to have a real role in their political self-determination. Capitalism frustrates the realization of this natural need by presenting a façade of democracy, behind which a ruling class makes the core decisions necessary to serve its own interests at the expense of the self-realization of the masses. They even control the consciousness of the masses by keeping them ignorant of their needs, and telling them they are free individuals. Thus, folks fail to even become aware of the needs they have, and the power they have to throw off their shackles and to fulfill those needs.

Marx’s mission was as much educational as it was political. Far from being an anti-individual “collectivist,” Marx saw communism as a system in support of Free Individuality, a system in which the primary aim is the free development of each and the free development of all. As Eagleton notes, Marx envisioned communism as a system that could deliver on the promise made by the Enlightenment’s Liberal philosophy of individual freedom for self-development. Indeed, Marx’s central critique of capitalism is that it reduces the individual to a fragment of a person, and an appendage to a machine. In capitalism, the individual is forced to develop only those work skills necessary to produce a profit for the capitalist. In communism, as Marx envisioned it, the necessary work would be done to meet the basic needs of everyone, and this would be done in ways that enabled everyone to participate in all the important decision making processes, economic and political. Marx wanted true democracy for all, not just democracy on Election Day. Also, Marx wanted to avoid violence where possible, and said that people in representative democracies like Great Britain and the USA could change the system through elections.

While his presentation of Marx’s Marxism is excellent in its emphasis on Free Individuality, Eagleton misconstrues Marx in at least three notable ways. Marx was totally committed to Human Emancipation. But Eagleton doesn’t seem to get that point. He confuses that with political emancipation – like for oppressed groups (such as women, LGBT, racial groups, etc.). Marx intended communism to Free Humanity from oppression, not just through reforms group by group, but through revolution if necessary. He made this clear in his essay On the Jewish Question. Secondly, Marx did NOT use communism as his standard by which to criticize capitalism. He never defined communism by specifying what kind of institutions it would have. His focus was always on inhumane social relations in the capitalist system, their nature and causes. Marx left it up to folks in the future to make their own institutions as necessary. But Eagleton writes of communism as if it were Marx’s Shangri-La, or a final resting place for the human soul, like the Christian Heaven. (See my essay Formal Axiology and Karl Marx.)

Finally, bordering on the ridiculous, Eagleton suggests that everyone in a communist system will be an aesthetic, like himself – a professional literary critic in England. He seems to envision a Man of Leisure, or an English Gentleman, passing his days painting portraits of his garden. Sorry, bro. People will still have to work, but work will be freely organized so that it both produces the necessities of life in abundance, and empowers all the workers to fulfill their nature as political animals, or species beings. Do as you please after work. That’s Marx’s idea of the good life.

A most necessary and important book

A most necessary and important book about a most necessary and important man. As always Eagleton is a pleasure to read. Marx's real thought and writings have been so intellectually corrupted by rightwing idiots or left wing idealists it is beyond tragic. Eagleton does a great job at setting the record straight. Although he made a solid case he left a lot of intellectual artillery unused. I'm sure he had his reasons. Somebody should take this book and finish the job with even finer detail.

A brilliant polemic. A must read for all revolutionary leftists, especially Marxists. Every page contains fiery arguments in defense of Marx's philosophy. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Terry Eagleton is a passionate intellectual who writes crystal clear prose, who constructs solid arguments, who sprinkles his wry sense of humor onto every page, and who is a deeply compassionate human being.

The seventh book in seven years of the Finish Rich series (two million in print) is aimed at older readers who have neglected their savings. It reads like an infomercial script, brassily positive and unrelentingly motivational. Anyone can finish rich, says Bach (Automatic Millionaire, etc.), if they are willing to "spend less, save more, and make more." The bulk of the book describes a variety of tactics and strategies (many covered in his previous books) for accomplishing these three tasks. Readers of financial help books will have heard many of Bach's ideas before, but he does deliver a lion's share of solid advice in an entertaining format, and, for good measure, he throws in an occasional counterintuitive gem, such as why paying off credit card debt can be "a huge mistake." He also anticipates and overcomes common objections ("dealing with debt doesn't mean putting the rest of your life on hold"), although anyone impolite enough to push back too hard is dismissed: "I have a term for negative people who seem to enjoy raining on other people's parades. I call them 'dream stealers,' and I try to avoid them."

However, it does demand specific activities, like spending less, saving more, making more, and giving and living more. Inside each chapter, positioned in memorable fashion, are his commandments. The "double latte" factor, for instance, asks about taking control of the smaller daily expenditures, whether it is an everyday Starbucks vente or a weekly Wal-Mart "fix." He talks to the safe-and-steady philosophy of investment, with warnings about trying to time the market. There is a light at the end of the tunnel!

This book is very motivating. I got a lot of great tips about saving money and paying off debt that I am already implementing. The book flows very easily and can be applied to anyone in any economical situation. It makes an older saver feel hopeful that his/her economic situation can improve by following the many practical suggestions offered. I did not give it five stars only because a lot has changed in the financial world since it was written ie, the ease with which to obtain mortgages, etc. No fault of Mr. Bach of course, he's done a wonderful job of getting me to save more, spend less, and chip away at debt. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who feels it's too late to get their finances in better shape.

simple logic

This book taught me that I didn't need to be afraid of the fact that I had not managed my finances properly throughout my life - and that at age 61 it's not too late to start building a nest egg towards financial freedom.

Bach's book is simple to follow, logical, and immensely motivational. My only regret is that several chapters talk about Institutions and support in the USA. I live in South Africa therefore these parts of the book were not relevant to me. But Bach gave me the leads to research the equivalent institutions in my own country.

I recommend the book to anyone who, like me, has fooled themselves by thinking all their working lives that money is not important. It's a crucial aspect of wellbeing!

I am 65 and benefiting from David Bach's books

In almost all of David Bach's books, he describes a file system for your financial files. I had a file system. But when the file cabinet broke, and after I started putting my important papers in folders in boxes, and then they filled up and I left them on top of a table... the paper fire hazard finally had to be dealt with. Although I didn't follow his system literally, it inspired me to scan all this rubble and organize it in my computer (about 1 month of effort). The very personal files (those with Social Security numbers and account numbers) are stored on my Iron Key. The paper in the living room is nearly gone by now, and I can find my documents all the way back to 2004 instantly and easily.

If you are young, any of David Bach's books will be helpful regardless of their title. You are never too young to start saving, and he has great advice on how much, how and when to do this. Goals such as retirement and college are important. But if you just start building your financial portfolio as early as you can, you almost won't need to worry about the goals - the money will be there when you need it. David Bach also helps you to differentiate need from want, and identifies what "wants" waste your hard earned money.

I recommend the Finish Rich series for everyone, young and old alike. These books are must haves!

Calling white racism "the most consequential [problem] for the nation's future," two University of Florida sociologists offer several recent case studies: cross burnings in Dubuque, Iowa; discrimination against black patrons at the Denny's restaurant chain; the readiness of the Boston police and the media to believe Charles Stuart when he accused a black man of committing the murder he himself committed-a case consistently mentioned in discussions Sue Smith, who said a black man kidnapped her two children before she confessed to killing them. Much of this has already been picked over by the media but the authors suggest that these events could have turned out differently save for certain individual and societal perceptions and reactions. For example, the authors uncover knee-jerk reactions in media treatment of 1988 presidential campaign scarecrow Willie Horton and rapper Sister Souljah. The book's opening description of the Los Angeles riots as an "urban rebellion" telegraphs a strong PC bias, in which the authors avoid nuanced discussion of race (try Stephen Carter or Cornel West), dismiss white (not to mention black) fears of black crime and offer such dubious proposals as reparations for slavery and a new constitutional convention that would entrench identity politics. Still, the authors are correct to say that blacks have more contact with whites than vice versa, and that whites must develop cross-racial empathy; those who have "some personal experience with exploitation, discrimination, or oppression" are, they say, more likely to empathize.

Feagin and Vera's well-intentioned book presents seven case studies of American racism perpetrated by middle-class whites against blacks (who, for Feagin and Vera, belong to no class). The cases are those of cross burnings in Dubuque, Iowa, that protested a proposal to attract black families to the preponderantly white city; ill will among undergraduates at a college (Olivet) founded by abolitionists; discrimination in family restaurant chains (Shoney's, Denny's, IHOP); whites (skinheads) who murder blacks or frame them for murder; Rodney King and the LAPD; Willie Horton and George Bush; and Sister Souljah and Bill Clinton. The concise recaps of these newsy racial incidents may become godsends to students with term papers to write but don't make up for the book's great weakness--deploring racism's cost in dollars but nowhere even estimating it. The volume's final contribution to understanding American racism could be glossed, unimpressively but not completely unfairly, "Few white Americans realize that racism was not ended by the Civil War. Not Earth-Shattering but Very Well Done

White Racism is a look into Racism by whites. It's titled White Racism because the authors contend at the very beginning that:

"From the perspective we take in this book, black racism does not exist. We conceptualize racism in structural and institutional as well as individual terms. Racism is more than a matter of individual prejudice and scattered episodes of discrimination. There is no black racism because there is no centuries-old system of racialized subordination and discrimination designed by African Americans to exclude white Americans from full participation in the rights, privileges, and benefits of this society."

Then on page 7 they define racism as:

"...the socially organized set of attitudes, ideas, and practices that deny African Americans and other people of color the dignity, opportunities, freedoms, and rewards that this nation offers white Americans."

So, with that as the framework (which I greatly appreciated as it gave the book a point of reference), it was clear why that title was chosen (although it isn't unique, Joe Kovel had a similarly titled book before them as they mention).

The book takes a look at racism in very specific, non-traditional incidents as opposed to a macro, generic view. Racism is expected from the KKK or the Aryan Brotherhood. Racism is expected in the deep south or amongst poor uneducated whites. But what about university campuses, or entire towns of Iowa, or from national restaurant chains or from presidential candidates?

By looking at very specific occurrences in which race was an issue they helped pull back the veil that many live under. Many, if not most, whites will contend that they are not racist because they aren't part of the KKK or they don't use the N-word, but will call blacks apes or would bar them from living in their neighborhood or other than that. Feagin and Vera separate racists into the officiants, the acolytes and the passives. Very few people are officiants, or active racists that partake in traditional racist behavior; but many more are acolytes--helpers, and more still are willing to sit idly by and allow racism to occur when they have an ability to oppose it.

Granted, White Racism is no Earth-shattering expose or some huge revelation but it is a serious problem that has existed for a very long time. It's one thing to shout "that's racist and that's racist" and it's another thing entirely to put in time and research to find out what is really racist and how far does it go. The book is very well done and very well researched and very concise at 194 pages of text.

A compelling look at Racism within the country

After reading some of the reviews, and finishing this excellent study, it is apparent that the message of this book did not come across to some. Feagin is not picking on "white" (European Americans) people, he is merely pointing out the inequalities that exist within the United States. This book is thorough in proving the experiences of people of color and of European Americans are extremely different. Feagin found police brutality, for example, occurred increasingly more for people of color than for European Americans. African Americans experience harassment far more than European Americans, and the cases Feagin uses illustrates this fact. Also, the recent debate of affirmative action is also covered well in this book.
"Reverse racism" as many would like to claim Feagin is guilty of, is not real. People of color cannot be racists because racism is linked to power. People of color can be bigots, but since power in this country is held by European Americans, as Feagin points out in many of his chapters, people of color cannot act on their hatred or resentment. Since European Americans are found in government, police forces, Fortune 500 companies, and other vessels of power, "white" interests are protected.
As one can see, this book causes the reader to think. Even though you might not agree with Feagin's conclusions, it causes us to examine a social ill that has been with this country since its founding. I will not only answer questions, but help raise critical questions about ethnic relations in this country.
