One of the Best Books I have read as an adult

When I went to the seminary this was a book one of my professors recommended so I got it and read through it in a couple of hours and was amazed at how in-depth this book is for as small as it is. The first time I read this book was in 1993 and I have read it at least once a year since then. Sometimes I have misplaced the tiny paperback and get upset when I can't find it. I was really pleased when this came out for the kindle and I was able to get it for free. If you are a spiritual person you will want to read this book and believe me it is a quick read and very enlightening. If you put the practices of Brother Lawrence to work in your own spiritual life you will experience a deeper commitment and understanding of God. I recommend this book to people of all ages and suggest that if you have read it once read it again. Every time I read it I find a new jewel of wisdom I can grab onto and grow closer to God.

A short discussion of this book was presented in "Love Says Go" by Jason Chin and it piqued my interest. "The Practice of the Presence of God" is absolutely the most wonderful and inspiring testimony of one who placed his complete trust in God and communicated with Him at a level that many of us today would find beyond our reach today; but is it? I am finding that it is not, although I dare say that I could achieve his level of humility and persistent faith.

The book is not so much written by Brother Lawrence as it is a compilation of letters, thoughts, and finally a short biography written by a dear friend. The thoughts of Brother Lawrence span the centuries since they were first penned but they are messages that encourage, heal, and inspire the believer today. I have read it and keep pulling it off the shelf for encouragement.

Short read but powerful

This is a classic that I hadn't read before. But I'm glad that I read it now. Brother Lawrence doesn't advocate anything that is complicated, which I believe we too often try to make being in God's presence. Instead, there's a beauty in the simplicity of the practices he advocates. It's not a long read, but it's definitely good.

I don't have much to add to what others have said except to say I am re-reading this book due to having someone drain my energy. I noticed that there was something off about this person but didn't know what. A psychic friend told me that this person was pulling my energy as we sat next to each other in a meeting.
When I arrived home, I went straight to this book for some techniques. Like some other reviewers, I'm not big on complex rituals, nor on using herbs and stones very much although I sometimes do. I tend to prefer visualizations, of which there are plenty in this book, from requesting a pillar of protection from one of the archangels to others such as visualizing your own sphere of protection, cutting psychic cords which can also drain energy or repairing the aura.
While thinking about this experience, I did not feel that the person was being malicious, just misguided. I have no need to send anything harmful her way, I will just have a psychic boundary to protect myself. And I plan to make those part of my psychic health maintenance.

Wow, Christopher Penczak really knows his stuff. Check it out!

Christopher Penczak's The Witch's Shield is a MUST HAVE book for anyone who has ever felt the effects of someone else's wrath or negative energy. A few weeks ago, I started experiencing a person harassing me, and having strong negativity around them.

I started working with Christopher Penczak's "The Witch's Shield" book and Protection CD in which you envision your aura being encased with a clear crystal egg that allows the good energy in, yet repels and neutralizes any negative or harmful energies. He has a beautiful voice that is easy to listen, relax, and visualize with.

I have uploaded two aura photos in this book's customer reviews area. The first one has purples, pinks, and blues in it, and that is how it typically looks, as I get it done twice a year at a local psychic fair. I worked with The Witch's Shield meditation CD for 3 days prior to having the second aura photo taken, and I couldn't believe how it came out. It clearly shows a golden egg around me. At first I thought a mistake had occurred, but then I recalled that I had been working with this protection CD and it was clearly being shown in the second aura photo.

If you have EVER doubted that this stuff works, check these aura photos out. I am a Usui, Tibetan, & Karuna Reiki Master Teacher that practices in Denver, CO. You never know what kind of people that you might come across when you are out in public. It is a great idea to work with a meditation CD such as this for self-protection. I loved this book!!
Not a very long and drawn out book,I read it in one lazy afternoon!
But it has a lot of great information for those of us long on the path and those starting out as well,
I like his point of view and his non judgemental approach, I have always felt that Wicca is for those who take personal
responsibility ..I found it very enjoyable and can only imagine that the few negative reviews came from people that didn't actually read the entire book cover to cover.

About the Author
Dr. James T. Shipman was a long-time physics educator at Ohio University, his alma mater, and was Professor Emeritus until his passing in 2009.

Jerry Wilson received his physics degrees from Ohio University (B.S., Ph.D.) and Union College in Schenectady, New York (M.S.). In addition to co-writing PHYSICS LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS, he is one of the original authors of the first edition of AN INTRODUCTION OF PHYSICAL SCIENCE (published in 1971) and has several other physics textbooks to his credit. Wilson is currently Emeritus Professor of Physics at Lander University in Greenwood, South Carolina.

Chuck Higgins received his B.S. degree in physics from the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 1988 and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees form the University of Florida in 1996. Areas of interest and research include planetary radio astronomy and astronomy education and public outreach. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Middle Tennessee State University in Mufreesboro, Tennessee. He is the 2007-8 recipient of the MTSU Outstanding Teacher Award, and is also the recipient of the NASA Excellence in Outreach Award for his work on NASA's Radio Jove Project in 2005.

Omar Torres received his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Texas A&M University in 1998 and his graduate degree in Inorganic Chemistry from UCLA in 2001. He has experience in teaching, research (inorganic, organic, and analytical) and academic administration. Professor Torres taught both inorganic and organic chemistry at UCLA, where he earned two UCLA Department of Chemistry Awards for Excellence in Teaching for the 1998-1999 and 1999-2000 school years. In addition, Professor Torres has worked at the Dow Chemical Company (Freeport, TX) in the area of Analytical Quality Control, developing and implementing new technologies for various plant operators and analytical scientists. He is currently Dean of Science at the College of the Canyons.

This book changed my life!

A friend was cleaning out her library and gave it to me (thought the title was cute). It started me on a quest of over 100 books in 5 years. Fascinating explanations for how we got here and why things are the way they are. Will get you thinking for sure. So much about earth one does not read or find out about anywhere else.

The Big Lie

The Big Lie is detailed in precise, well researched jargon that anyone can understand and follow. Pye picks apart every theory, concept and idea that scientists hang their hats on. Meticulously destroying Darwinism (evolution), the forming of our solar system, where comets come from and a whole list of others. He pokes holes in every major theory that mankind has been conditioned to believe. He shows chapter after chapter why Neanderthals not only survived but are alive today, how the human race was conceived and when it all began.

This maybe the most groundbreaking achievement of the 21st Century, a must read for anyone searching for the truth. Hands down the most thorough book of its kind, bringing it all together in one book. From the ancient pyramids to the creation of our solar system he leaves no stone unturned!

"Everything" was a very interesting read as I really wanted to find out exactly just what was wrong with all that I had learned. I think the author did a great job of condensing Zecharia Sitchin's works into a more readable form for readers who want the overall basics Sitchin's ideas and works.

While it's hardly the most traveled of literary destinations, poetry has suffered from no shortage of guidebooks. Still, these poetic baedekers tend to get bogged down in terminology and historical hairsplitting, while the actual music gets lost in the shuffle. We should be thankful, then, for Robert Pinsky's brief, wonderfully readable volume, in which he zooms in on verse as acoustic artifact: "When I say to myself a poem by Emily Dickinson or George Herbert, the artist's medium is my breath. The reader's breath and hearing embody the poet's words. This makes the art physical, intimate, vocal, and individual."

Not that Poet Laureate Pinsky gets vague or touchy-feely on us. Poetry, like God, is in the details, and the author starts with the building blocks, the amino acids, of verse: accent and duration. Even the most jaded of readers will benefit from his syllable-by-syllable examination of Thomas Campion's "Now Winter Nights Enlarge" and Wallace Stevens's "Sunday Morning." Moving on through discussions of syntax and line, meter and rhyme (or lack thereof), Pinsky enlists both the usual suspects (Shakespeare, Frost, Hardy, Eliot, Bishop) and some less customary ones (Gilbert & Sullivan, Louise Gluck, and the splendid James McMichael) to make his points. These poems are, in some sense, teaching tools for the author. Yet even his on-the-fly commentary causes us to see them in a new light. Here he is, for example, on the near-monotonous minimalism of W.C. Williams's "To a Poor Old Woman": "The poem dramatizes the taking in of a supposedly ordinary experience, and the playful, almost hectoring repetitions are like an effective sermon in praise of simplicity." The Sounds of Poetry is no less effective a sermon. It leaves your ear (and your heart) attuned to the pleasurable play of poetic language and persuades you that hearing is, indeed, believing. --James Marcus

Though this book is written by a celebrated poet (the poet laureate of the Untied States), there is little to be gleaned from it. The work is organized in five chapters about the mechanics of poetry: accent, syntax, terms, chimes, and some notes on blank and free verse. This title, oddly written in a humorless, academic first person for the novice, tells us more about what Pinsky thinks than about the subtle merging of the oral and written craft of English verse. Perhaps straining to make the mysteries of poetry accessible, the passages define, advise, and recommend like a set of cobbled lecture notes. Better to stick with Alfred Corn's quality guide, The Poem's Heartbeat (LJ 4/1/97). Pinsky's endeavor is a disappointing enterprise.

Excellent Book to Cover Fundamentals of Reading Poetry

I've studied poetry in high school and then again for a semester last year. Pinsky provides the serious student with an enjoyable dive into the most helpful methods to read poetry. He has many diverse suggestions for what might help a reader (beginner to advanced) to gain a wider access to a poem's meaning and beauty. It is a piece to aid in the study and appreciation of poetry. It heightened my own enjoyment of poetry and the book itself is fun to read and full of great poetry used as examples and exercises. Strongly recommend it for readers of all levels.

The Sounds of Poetry delivers more than sound

As one would expect, any book on the craft of writing poetry by Robert Pinsky would be exceptional. This was no exception! True to the poetic stance of brevity, this book provides a lot of information in 129 pages. As a published poet who also teaches poetry, I found this book helpful not only for my personal improvement, but for tips to share on how one can better appreciate poetry.

About the Author

Peter Newman is professor of city policy and director of the Institute for Sustainability and Technology Policy at Murdoch University in Perth, Australia. He recently completed a Fulbright scholarship, which he spent at the University of Virginia studying sustainability initiatives in the U.S. He is the author of Sustainability and Cities (Island Press, 1999).

Isabella Jennings is a graduate student in the School of Environmental Science at Murdoch University. Her past and current research is related to the cities as sustainable ecosystems idea.

Skims the surface of a deeper topic

This book comes across as presenting in-depth information on creating sustainability within cities by utilizing a systems approach. Instead, what it is is a long restatement of "the Ten Melbourne Principles for Sustainable Cities", a set of principles developed at a conference held in Melbourne, Australia. All of the principles are covered in the introduction. The authors then rehash them in ten chapters incorporating a lot of naivete along the way.

One theme that keeps recurring in the book is the idea that indigenous cultures are more aware than other cultures of the importance of preserving the ecosystems on which they depend. This is a good example of "survivor bias". The authors pay attention to cultures that have survived, ignoring all the failed indigenous cultures. They are also making a misleading statement about these cultures by suggesting their practices were such that they would have continued on had they not been interrupted by Europeans.

The authors give some broad, non-science based introductions to topics like resilience, panarchy, and ecosystems, going so far as to misrepresent an ecosystem as some sort of smoothly running conflict-free process. Nature is cutthroat. It is unforgiving to elements that are causing problems. It is not the sort of place where the members are focused on "Fostering a sense of joy and belonging through rituals and celebrations following natural cycles" (p.47). Unless, of course, you see a bear taking down a moose then killing any animal that tries to interfere with his meal a joyful celebration.

On the bright side, I think this book provides a lot of introductory information and some good references on the topics it addresses.
