Upon being extremely disappointed about the fact that the book only contains answers ...
By damoose
I rented this book for the sole purpose of checking the even answers not listed in the back of the textbook. Upon being extremely disappointed about the fact that the book only contains answers to odd-numbered problems, I checked the product description and saw that it does mention that it only contains even-numbered problems. The two stars are for me taking responsibility for missing the two words in the description, but otherwise, the product is worth zero stars to me. This product is misleading and cheap. I find it a rather significant fact that the solutions manual only contains half of the solutions, worthy of being written on the cover or in the title, or in some kind of warning somewhere. I am disappointed in how misleading and useless this product is.

Quick Review
By Jose "SuperCharger" Rias
I had been developing software for about 10 years... and am just finishing up a grad degree in CS after going back to school... If found this book to be a LOT better than all the hand outs that my prof put together... It's a great book to give you an overview of all the problems in mobile computing... and a lot of the answers... (not all :-)). As the other reviewer says, it's priced a bit high at $85.00, but I found it to be well worth the price I paid... hopefully the prof takes my recommendation and uses it as the text book for future classes...

My View on Mobile Application Principles
By Taka Ai
Please excuse English. This is a very good book for learning mobile applications in US and Europe. Also, a lot of good new things on UML and XML. But, I would have liked to see more on the Japanese Mobile development. I think this is good as a text book in class room or reference. I would like to have more introductions to UML than 1 chapter. The UML is more advanced in this book. Also lot of good location and voice informations.

Stuffed and Starved: The Hidden Battle for the World Food System - Revised and Updated, by Raj Patel

Revised and Expanded Edition

"For anyone attempting to make sense of the world food crisis, or understand the links between U.S. farm policy and the ability of the world's poor to feed themselves, Stuffed and Starved is indispensable."
—Michael Pollan, author of The Omnivore's Dilemma

It’s a perverse fact of modern life: There are more starving people in the world than ever before, while there are also more people who are overweight.

To find out how we got to this point and what we can do about it, Raj Patel launched a comprehensive investigation into the global food network. It took him from the colossal supermarkets of California to India’s wrecked paddy-fields and Africa’s bankrupt coffee farms, while along the way he ate genetically engineered soy beans and dodged flying objects in the protestor-packed streets of South Korea.

What he found was shocking, from the false choices given us by supermarkets to a global epidemic of farmer suicides, and real reasons for famine in Asia and Africa.

Yet he also found great cause for hope—in international resistance movements working to create a more democratic, sustainable and joyful food system. Going beyond ethical consumerism, Patel explains, from seed to store to plate, the steps to regain control of the global food economy, stop the exploitation of both farmers and consumers, and rebalance global sustenance.

Review
"Compelling. At first glance, Raj is another depressing voice in the chorus. But in traveling the world researching the book, he also found hope in international social movements working to create more democratic, sustainable, and joyful food systems."
—Mark Bittman, New York Times

"For anyone attempting to make sense of the world food crisis, or understand the links between U.S. farm policy and the ability of the world's poor to feed themselves, Stuffed and Starved is indispensable."
—Michael Pollan, author of The Omnivore's Dilemma

“One of the most dazzling books I have read in a very long time. The product of a brilliant mind and a gift to a world hungering for justice.”
—Naomi Klein, author of No Logo

"Patel's broad treatment helps the layman connect the dots, as well as hear the voices of those who occupy the lower rungs of the global food chain."
—Time Magazine

"A blistering indictment of the policies of multinational agribusiness conglomerates and charges that their drive for profit at any cost has left the developing world starving while wealthy countries like the United States are experiencing epidemic obesity rates and related health problems."
—Newsweek

"For Patel, it is a short step from Western consumers 'engorged and intoxicated' with cheap processed food to Mexican and Indian farmers committing suicide because they can’t make a living. The 'food industry’s pabulum' makes us all cogs in an evil machine."
—The New Yorker

"A book full of insight, that makes an important contribution to understanding that the politics of food is not a narrow matter of shopping, ethical or otherwise."
—The Guardian

"Stuffed and Starved remains a brilliant didactic account of the powerful interests (dis)organizing our food systems, and why, when food is an object of profit, there are no modern solutions to modern problems such as endemic hunger, ill-health and environmental degradation...Raj Patel’s unique sensibility and intelligence in evaluating grassroots alternatives provide a road map to understanding and changing the world through re-centering food as a cultural anchor rather than a product, especially at this moment of environmental uncertainty." —Philip David McMichael, author of Development and Social Change

"With its conversational tone, sense of humor, and real-life vignettes from the author's travels around the world, the book is accessible to general readers and will be as classroom-friendly as Michael Pollan's Omnivore's Dilemma." —Reference and Research Book News

Today, when we produce more food than ever before, more than one in ten people on Earth are hungry. The hunger of 800 million happens at the same time as another historical first: that they are outnumbered by the one billion people on this planet who are overweight. Global hunger and obesity are symptoms of the same problem and, what’s more, the route to eradicating world hunger is also the way to prevent global epidemics of diabetes and heart disease, and to address a host of environmental and social ills. Overweight and hungry people are linked through the chains of production that bring food from fields to our plate. Guided by the profit motive, the corporations that sell our food shape and constrain how we eat, and how we think about food. The limitations are clearest at the fast food outlet, where the spectrum of choice runs from McMuffin to McNugget. But there are hidden and systemic constraints even when we feel we’re beyond the purview of Ronald McDonald.

Even when we want to buy something healthy, something to keep the doctor away, we’re trapped in the very same system that has created our ‘Fast Food Nations’. Try, for example, shopping for apples. At supermarkets in North America and Europe, the choice is restricted to half a dozen varieties: Fuji, Braeburn, Granny Smith, Golden Delicious and perhaps a couple of others. Why these? Because they’re pretty: we like the polished and unblemished skin. Because their taste is one that’s largely unobjectionable to the majority. But also because they can stand transportation over long distances. Their skin won’t tear or blemish if they’re knocked about in the miles from orchard to aisle. They take well to the waxing technologies and compounds that make this transportation possible and keep the apples pretty on the shelves. They are easy to harvest. They respond well to pesticides and industrial production. These are reasons why we won’t find Calville Blanc, Black Oxford, Zabergau Reinette, Kandil Sinap or the ancient and venerable Rambo on the shelves. Our choices are not entirely our own because, even in a supermarket, the menu is crafted not by our choices, nor by the seasons, nor where we find ourselves, nor by the full range of apples available, nor by the full spectrum of available nutrition and tastes, but by the power of food corporations.

The concerns of food production companies have ramifications far beyond what appears on supermarket shelves. Their concerns are the rot at the core of the modern food system. To show the systemic ability of a few to impact the health of the many demands a global investigation, travelling from the ‘green deserts’ of Brazil to the architecture of the modern city, and moving through history from the time of the first domesticated plants to the Battle of Seattle. It’s an enquiry that uncovers the real reasons for famine in Asia and Africa, why there is a worldwide epidemic of farmer suicides, why we don’t know what’s in our food any more, why black people in the United States are more likely to be overweight than white, why there are cowboys in South Central Los Angeles, and how the world’s largest social movement is discovering ways, large and small, for us to think about, and live differently with, food.

The alternative to eating the way we do today promises to solve hunger and diet-related disease, by offering a way of eating and growing food that is environmentally sustainable and socially just. Understanding the ills of the way food is grown and eaten also offers the key to greater freedom, and a way of reclaiming the joy of eating. The task is as urgent as the prize is great. In every country, the contradictions of obesity, hunger, poverty and wealth are becoming more acute. India has, for example, destroyed millions of tons of grains, permitting food to rot in silos, while the quality of food eaten by India’s poorest is getting worse for the first time since Independence in 1947. In 1992, in the same towns and villages where malnutrition had begun to grip the poorest families, the Indian government admitted foreign soft drinks manufacturers and food multinationals to its previously protected economy. Within a decade, India has become home to the world’s largest concentration of diabetics: people – often children – whose bodies have fractured under the pressure of eating too much of the wrong kinds of food. India isn’t the only home to these contrasts. They’re global, and they’re present even in the world’s richest country. In the United States in 2005, 35.1 million people didn’t know where their next meal was coming from. At the same time there is more diet-related disease like diabetes, and more food, in the US than ever before.

It’s easy to become inured to this contradiction; its daily version causes only mild discomfort, walking past the ‘homeless and hungry’ signs on the way to supermarkets bursting with food. There are moral emollients to balm a troubled conscience: the poor are hungry because they’re lazy, or perhaps the wealthy are fat because they eat too richly. This vein of folk wisdom has a long pedigree. Every culture has had, in some form or other, an understanding of our bodies as public ledgers on which is written the catalogue of our private vices. The language of condemnation doesn’t, however, help us understand why hunger, abundance and obesity are more compatible on our planet than they’ve ever been. Moral condemnation only works if the condemned could have done things differently, if they had choices. Yet the prevalence of hunger and obesity affect populations with far too much regularity, in too many different places, for it to be the result of some personal failing. Part of the reason our judgement is so out of kilter is because the way we read bodies hasn’t kept up with the times. Although it may once have been true, the assumption that to be overweight is to be rich no longer holds. Obesity can no longer be explained exclusively as a curse of individual aff luence. There are systemic features that make a difference. Here’s an example: many teenagers in Mexico, a developing country with an average income of US$6,000, are bloated as never before, even as the ranks of the Mexican poor swell. Individual wealth doesn’t explain why the children of some families are more obese than others: the crucial factor turns out not to be income, but proximity to the US border. The closer a Mexican family lives to its northern neighbours and to their sugar- and fat-rich processed food habits, the more overweight the family’s children are likely to be.2 That geography matters so much rather overturns the idea that personal choice is the key to preventing obesity or, by the same token, preventing hunger. And it helps to renew the lament of Porfirio Diaz, one of Mexico’s late-nineteenth-century presidents and autocrats: ‘¡Pobre Mexico! Tan lejos de Dios; y tan cerca de los Estados Unidos’ (Poor Mexico: so far from God, so close to the United States).

A perversity of the way our food comes to us is that it’s now possible for people who can’t afford enough to eat to be obese. Children growing up malnourished in the favelas of São Paulo, for instance, are at greater risk from obesity when they become adults. Their bodies, broken by childhood poverty, metabolize and store food poorly. As a result, they’re at greater risk of storing as fat the (poor-quality) food that they can access.3 Across the planet, the poor can’t afford to eat well. Again, this is true even in the world’s richest country; and in the US, it’s children who will pay the price. One research team recently suggested that if consumption patterns stay the way they are, today’s US children will live five fewer years, because of the diet-related diseases to which they will be exposed in their lifetimes.

As consumers, we’re encouraged to think that an economic system based on individual choice will save us from the collective ills of hunger and obesity. Yet it is precisely ‘freedom of choice’ that has incubated these ills. Those of us able to head to the supermarket can boggle at the possibility of choosing from fifty brands of sugared cereals, from half a dozen kinds of milk that all taste like chalk, from shelves of bread so sopped in chemicals that they will never go off, from aisles of products in which the principal ingredient is sugar. British children are, for instance, able to select from twenty-eight branded breakfast cereals the marketing of which is aimed directly at them. The sugar content of twenty-seven of these exceeds the government’s recommendations. Nine of these children’s cereals are 40 per cent sugar. It’s hardly surprising, then, that 8.5 per cent of six-year-olds and more than one in ten fifteen-year-olds in the UK are obese. And the levels are increasing. The breakfast cereal story is a sign of a wider systemic feature: there’s every incentive for food producing corporations to sell food that has undergone processing which renders it more profitable, if less nutritious. Incidentally, this explains why there are so many more varieties of breakfast cereals on sale than varieties of apples.

There are natural limits to our choices. There are, for instance, only so many naturally occurring fruits, vegetables and animals that people are prepared to eat. But even here, a little advertising can persuade us to expand the ambit of our choices. Think of the kiwi fruit, once known as the Chinese gooseberry, but rebranded to accommodate Cold War prejudices by the New Zealand food company that marketed it to the world at the end of the 1950s. It’s a taste no-one had grown up with, but which now seems as if it has always been there. And while new natural foods are slowly added to our menus, the food industry adds tens of thousands of new products to the shelves every year, some of which become indispensable fixtures which, after a generation, make life unimaginable without them. It’s a sign of how limited our gastronomic imaginations can be. And also a sign that we’re not altogether sure how or where or why certain foods end up on our plate.

the malnutrition of the poor in urban communities should be an important point as ...
By Victoria
I am currently a senior chemical engineer taking a food science class. I have learned about food distribution and accessibility issues through trips to Nicaragua and an urban development class. Both of these looked at the economic issues people in these groups faces but never the emotional and mental toll hunger has. I am thankful that this book opened up my eyes to the emotional trauma farmers go through due to the globalization of crops. Throughout reading the book, I realized that a lot of the things that Patel was talking about were things I think most people already know but choose to actively ignore when purchasing food, know but are not aware that they know, or logical conclusions that one can make when really thinking about the process of how our food gets to us.

I think the book could have focused a little more on supermarkets impact on economies in "the Global South." It was mentioned briefly through the mention of the farmers getting angry at ShopRite for taking all of their customers but I definitely think this is something that could be further discussed and studied. It is an issue that it's furthering the malnutrition of farmers and their families - something that is one of the main topics of this book.

This book focused a lot on farmers, the globalization of crops, and how farmers are impoverished and malnourished. However, the opposite end of the food spectrum, those who are obese, seemed to be severely lacking in detail. To me, it is important to note that not everyone who is obese is that way because they are glutinous. This was a point that was brought up but I feel that not enough emphasis was put on it. If the malnutrition of farmers is going to be such a big point, the malnutrition of the poor in urban communities should be an important point as well. The obesity problem of poor urban people seemed to be glossed over as an issue that had to do more with their lack of space to grow food and ease of public transportation instead of food accessibility. I don't think I am able to believe that space and transportation affect weight more than the ability to get healthy food. Most poor urban communities are food deserts. Instead of supermarkets, families need to shop at corner stores because that's what is closest to them. These stores are more expensive than supermarkets and filled with sugary drinks and foods high in sodium and fat. However, due to economic issues, long work days, and the time it takes to use public transportation, families do not have much of a choice but to buy from these stores. I'm glad the author cares so much about farmers and the struggles they have but there are some parts of this book that could have been taken out to allow more time to be focused on the poor in urban areas.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. It brought to light a lot of issues that I was unaware of, such as farmer suicide and government using food as a bargaining chip. However, there are a lot of aspects in the food market that I think could have been talked about or were talked about but could have had a lot more detail. This book would be beneficial for an introduction to the topic but other books would be needed to have more information about some of the issues that were briefly touched on in the book or issues that exist but were not really talked about at all.

Recommending Stuffed and Starved.
By Lambarie
This is an excellent book, logical, full of information and clearly written. For years, I have had serious doubts and alternative thoughts about our modern society, and wondered how it is that most people seem to see it quite differently than I do. It was such a pleasure to read this book and have my thoughts expressed so well, and those doubts and questions answered. I never thought I could read a book about economics and not go to sleep or give up in disgust, but I practically swallowed this one in one gulp and wished for more.

My only criticism of the book is that there are a few typos and bungled sentences.

Very thought provoking look at food and who produces genuine food.
By Mary Ann
You probably have no accurate idea about how your food is produced and by whom - - around the world. Michael Pollen changed how we think about food itself in his Omnivore 's Dilemma. Joel Salatin and many others have shown how it should be grown. Now, Patel lays out the economics of the food industry under which both the people who physically do the farming and those who buy food suffer, while all is controlled by a very few corporations that reap the big profits and government agencies that help them do it.

Patel argues for a return to the beauty of locally and/or personally grown food (animal and vegetable), it's loving preparation in the kitchen, and it's return to being a means of gathering family and community together. We need to slow down a bit.

When you learn the true costs of the food you are eating I hope you might rethink some of your choices.

Stuffed and Starved is not long - - and well worth your time to read it.

Massive, Complete & Utterly Amazing...But do you already own SF20?
By slateman
This is mainly a comparison review, noting the changes from SF20 to this release, SF25. Skip down a few paragraphs for that.

SF25 is a behemoth 446-page, nearly four-and-a-half pound book. It is a remarkable collection of art spanning dozens of games and is the best SF book in my decent collection of over a dozen such titles. It features art from a plethora of excellent artists, presented in solid binding and printed on high-quality paper. While I’ve seen better bindings, my copy of SF20 has lasted five years with no trouble (same quality) and the paper is wonderful.

It is, without a doubt, a must-have for anyone interested in SF art and has been offered at a tremendously-reasonable price. I used to pay twice as much for half when I was importing Capcom books from Japan.

This is a five-star purchase and the only reason to doubt would be if you already own SF20. If you don’t, buy this book. If you do, however, let’s compare…

The page count has risen almost 130 pages (from 320 to 448). While that is a hefty tally, realize that still means 320 pages are identical or almost identical. What is added is almost entirely newer games.

Among these added pages you’ll find 18 pages of interviews, 8 new illustrator sections, and 28 new pages of Polygon Pictures art. The latter has all the newest Super Street Fighter IV (and SSFIV: Arcade Edition) art and a ton of Street Fighter x Tekken art. You will not find the newest Ultra Street Fighter IV art here.

The intro has fourteen pages of exclusive art (7 two-page spreads featuring new works by the likes of Kinu Nishimura, Bengus & Shinkiro, etc. all fantastic). Also littered throughout are recent calendar artwork and a few bits & pieces missed from SF20.

If you own SF20, this isn’t necessarily a must-buy. It’s excellent and wonderful but you have to gauge if 130 pages is worth the cash. If you already have SFxT Artworks, you likely have a lot (but not all, I don’t think) of that art. If you own the SFIV + SSFIV Official Complete Works, that book has most of this, but not the AE characters (Yun, Yang, Evil Ryu & Oni) and some of the art specific to the AE upgrade.

If you have both SF20 and SFxT Artworks, you might want to pass.

If you just have SF20, weigh the price tag with the additions. I had no trouble plunking down the cash; the book is spectacular. But almost 2/3rds of this is the same as the last release. What is new though is certainly high-quality and the cover/back and spine are all wonderful. It sits on my shelf, massive but perfectly placed. This book is amazing.

Fantastic Artbook! 400+ Pages of Stunning Artwork.
By David
Terrific book that's 400+ pages of stunning artwork to celebrate 25 years of Street Fighter. The book is broken up in to sections for each artist with their comments, and where each artist has also provided an original piece of art for the book's opening, and covers every Street Fighter game from Street Fighter 2 to Street Fighter IV and the various crossover and VS titles.

Bonus points for the hilarious and absurd cutaway diagram for Shadowloo's island hideout!!

The book is highly recommended for all Street Fighter fans and those who love great artwork and video game art books!

Review
I have taught biochemistry to medical students and to undergraduates and graduate students, at both Temple University School of Medicine and at Case Western Reserve University, since 1968, so that I have had a great deal of experience in the field and have a feel for what works well for medical students.
Medical Biochemistry at a Glance would be an excellent book for USMLE Step 1. In my experience, medical students (and pre-medical students) would greatly benefit from reading it in preparation for the exam.
This compares very well with Lippincott’s Biochemistry - this has the right price and approach to compete with Lippincott for a less expensive and more accessible alternative to the larger text books that are out there.
I like the way it combines the metabolic pathways and principles in such a creative fashion, and the metabolism sections are among the best I have read and the easiest to understand. Metabolism is a very complicated subject and, in my experience, most teachers of the subject would really benefit from your text. (Richard W. Hanson, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine)

Fantastic Book
By WatermelonTiger
This is a great book for any medical professional, whether doctor, researcher, med student or nutritionist. It captures the major metabolic pathways in an easy to read format, with just the right mix of text and diagrams. The author's larger volume entitled Biochemistry at a Glance has even more in-depth information on the pathways, but fewer clinically relevant tidbits. I own and use both books. In fact, they are part of my go-to library of must-have reference books, spending more time out on the desk than sitting on the shelf.

I don't know if these come in an electronic format, but I bought the paper editions. With lots of graphics, ink colors and oversized pages, I think this would translate poorly into an eBook.

Great little Supplement for visual learning of Medical Biochemistry
By J. Kraw
This book saved me in the first year of medical school. I had a very poorly organized biochemistry textbook, with lectures that were not any better. I am a visual learner and needed large, detailed pictures that give an idea of the 'big picture.' That is where this small text excelled. Most of the major, basic pathways needed in medical biochemistry are covered--from TCA cycle to purine, pyrimidine, fat, and amino acid metabolism. I was not a science major in college so I needed major reviews on biochemistry.

Each 'system' is usually depicted on 2 adjacent pages, with many annotations, and usually a short, concise clinical note; but overall the majority of the page is taken up by the diagrams.

If you like systems diagrams to learn with, and need some good, visual, 'big picture' biochemistry study aids, I highly recommend this text.

Excellent - in the same league as Salway's Metabolism at a Glance!
By SM60
Way back in 1998 I came across Salway's Metabolism at a Glance, and ranked it as Excellent, Concise and Thorough! I would give the same designation to this book as well. Snippets of information are provided in each chapter, and under each diagram, that succinctly provide crucial information on each specific pathway - information that would be quite useful to a medical student or to a bio-medical researcher studying mammalian or human metabolism.

As Always, Julia: The Letters of Julia Child and Avis DeVotoFrom Rux Martin/Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

With her outsize personality, Julia Child is known around the world by her first name alone. But despite that familiarity, how much do we really know of the inner Julia?  Now more than 200 letters exchanged between Julia and Avis DeVoto, her friend and unofficial literary agent memorably introduced in the hit movie Julie & Julia, open the window on Julia’s deepest thoughts and feelings. This riveting correspondence, in print for the first time, chronicles the blossoming of a unique and lifelong friendship between the two women and the turbulent process of Julia’s creation of Mastering the Art of French Cooking, one of the most influential cookbooks ever written. Frank, bawdy, funny, exuberant, and occasionally agonized, these letters show Julia, first as a new bride in Paris, then becoming increasingly worldly and adventuresome as she follows her diplomat husband in his postings to Nice, Germany, and Norway. With commentary by the noted food historian Joan Reardon, and covering topics as diverse as the lack of good wine in the United States, McCarthyism, and sexual mores, these astonishing letters show America on the verge of political, social, and gastronomic transformation.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, December 2010: Though this collection of letters between Julia Child and her savvy friend, cook, and confidante, Avis DeVoto, may be voluminous, its narrative force is immediate. Julia and Avis shared a voracious curiosity about ingredients, gadgets, recipes, and methods that any home cook worth her salt will find wonderful to read. Their testing and tasting in large part fueled Mastering the Art of French Cooking, the now-legendary and game-changing cookbook that Avis, upon reading an early chapter, said "could be a classic and make your fortune and go on selling forever." Avis was an instant and unwavering champion of the book and shepherded its long journey towards publication stateside, as Julia and her co-authors in France worked doggedly on the manuscript, and there couldn't have been a better or brighter for advocate for the book's target audience. As a mid-century American housewife, Avis participated both eagerly and critically in the renaissance age of culinary convenience: she details her experiments with the frozen, freeze-dried, canned, and casseroled with a wonderful sense of humor and taste. These pieces are particularly fascinating to read now, as we resurrect the slow, local approach to home cooking, and her perspective on what was available to American cooks at that time is a seamless counterpart to her commentary on the cookbook itself, which she praises time and again for its classical richness and modern practicality. Julia writes to Avis early on that "people who love to eat are always the best people," and certainly nothing could be truer of these two formidable and gracious gourmandes. --Anne Bartholomew

The Young Julia Child: Occasionally insecure, always opinionated, never dull

Julia’s letter to Avis after Houghton Mifflin rejected her cookbook

An enterprising cook, Avis had a nose for a great book

Culinary historian, cookbook author, and biographer Joan Reardon

From Publishers Weekly
Culinary historian Reardon's collection of the correspondence between Child and her pen pal, Avis DeVoto (portrayed in the film Julie & Julia by Deborah Rush), bubbles over with intimate insights into their friendship. In 1952, Child was living in Paris when she wrote to Cambridge, Mass., historian Bernard DeVoto after reading his Harper's article about knives. Her letter was answered by his wife, Avis, who soon became her confidante, sounding board, and enthusiastic fellow cook. The two met finally met in person two years later. As a part of the publishing community, Avis (who died in 1989) was responsible for securing the publication of Mastering the Art of French Cooking, steering the book first to Houghton Mifflin and then to its eventual home at Knopf. Their letters span a wide range of topics, from cookbooks, menus, recipes, and restaurants to Balzac, sex, goose stuffing, gardening, learning languages, the political climate, Sunday afternoon cocktail parties, and proofreading. Witty, enlightening and entertaining, these letters serve as a compelling companion volume to Mastering the Art of French Cooking. (Dec. 1)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Many Julia Child followers already know the story of her extensive letter writing to “pen pal” Avis DeVoto, which began when DeVoto replied to a fan letter Child had sent to her husband, Bernard. But this volume marks the first appearance of their complete correspondence. Painstakingly compiled by editor Reardon (thanks to new archival access), the letters tell the incredible story of the rocky development of Child’s chef d’oeuvre, Mastering the Art of French Cooking (1961). Child and DeVoto’s relationship-on-paper began as a cooking one; living in Paris, Child enlisted DeVoto’s help in determining what ingredients were available to housewives in the States, her target audience. Their talk of solely “cookery-bookery,” cutely named by Child, quickly turned to friendly discussions of much more: family, social circles, and the politically taut McCarthy era. DeVoto, plugged into the American literary world, played an integral role in publishing Mastering. Helping one another through hardship (failed publishing attempts) and tragedy (Bernard’s death), the women’s frank, tender letters are an absolute delight to read, as much for their mouthwatering discussion of cuisine as for the palpable fondness they portray for one another. In an early note, DeVoto calls Child’s evolving manuscript “as exciting as a novel to read,” and, indeed, so are their conversations. --Annie Bostrom

An Historical Chronicle of Epic Proportions
By AvidReader
Earlier I reviewed this book based on having read 21% of the content; which remains embedded within this updated review. Now, with the entire book completed, I see more depth in the totality of letters exchanged between Julia Child and Avis DeVoto than was evident in the early letters.

This is a "book of many colors". It is historical. It is political. It is about relationships. It contains elements of hope; frustration; despair; persistence; and, ultimately, triumph over what at times must have seemed like overwhelming odds.

I am only 21% of the way through these fascinating letters be Julia Child and Avis DeVoto so this is but a very brief review of this work, however, it is also the only time I have been so engrossed in a book that I find it valuable to write a review as a "work in progress".

As an amatuer cook given to experienting will numerous styles of cuisine, I am not sure what I expected when I ordered this book in Kindle format but I assure those who read this that what I received is far more than what I believed the book would be. I guess I expected, well, a cookbook. To this point in my reading I have come to see this work as something far more important and, for those interested in history and travel, something totally unexpected.

If you are familiar with Julia Child through her cookbooks and PBS shows, then you, like I, don't know Julia as a person outside of her known field of expertise. Born in the mid-1940's, much of what is discussed in the letters relative to the political climate of the United States, post-World War II resonates with what I, and every other "Baby-Boomer" grew up with in the 50's and beyond. It provides an interesting perspective of what Julia and Avis (both obviously staunch Liberals) see as dangerous within the U.S.; Julia as an American living abroad with her husband working for the State Department, and Avis living in the U.S. married to a successful, if too liberal, author.

Highly recommended for cooks and those who aspire to be cooks; historians and those who think history is boring.

The preceding 4 paragraphs are from the original review.

Throughout these letters and Reardon's commentaries, we see a progression as the "pen-pal" friendship blossoms. The letters become more intimate. Attitudes and prejudices surface revealing much about both Julia and Avis. Julia loves France but seems, at times. to dislike the French. Avis mentions friends with a "certain condition", namely, that they are lesbians - revealing the deep-seated prejudice against gays and lesbians prevalent up until very recently (when viewed in the context of history). The use of the word "gay" in some of the letters is quickly explained to mean the true definition of the word as opposed to the sexual orientation it has come to represent.

Nothing in these letters serves to diminish the accomplishments of Julia, Simca, and Avis in the authorship and publication of Julia's and Simca's recognized masterpiece; nor, Julia's success as a star on PBS. These letters show what life was like from the late 40's through Avis' death and, in the Epilogue, beyond to further discuss (in commentary) Julia's continued success as an author and television personality.

Deserves more than 5-stars but that's all that are available.

Nice historical friendship book
By elib
Though I doubt if I read it again, this was a thoroughly enjoyable book. I found the letters and recipes fascinating. I had caught a few of her cooking shows when I was a little girl, but was unaware of just how interesting her life was. I did not know about her husband's career nor of their travels, so it was very cool to read. The little story of the knives and how it bonded the two women as friends is just one small aspect of the book. This is entirely a correspondence book and if that kind of thing turns you off, then don't read this book. The letters are divided up into sections for each woman, instead of just chronologically inserting the letters... I wish they would have done that.

Food, Friendship, Travel...This book has it all!
By The Book Addict
It started out with a letter about a knife, of all things. Julia and Paul Child had been in Paris about three and a half years when Julia read an article published in a 1951 issue of Harper's, written by Bernard DeVoto. His rant on the quality of American kitchen knives apparently spoke to Julia, so she wrote him a short letter and sent a him a knife, "a nice little French model as a token of [her] appreciation." (p. 7). Bernard DeVoto's wife, Avis, answered most of her husband's letters, so she was the one to respond to Julia.

And so it began. Before long, a close friendship between Julia Child and Avis DeVoto had been forged and the making of a culinary icon had begun. I was looking forward to reading this book once I heard about it. I was interested to learn more about Julia Child and her iconic cookbook, of course, but I was more interested in learning about the friendship between Julia and Avis. These two women corresponded primarily by letter for years as Julia and Paul moved from one country to the next. While it started out by discussing kitchen knives, the letters soon became about so much more, no topic was off limits it seemed- current events, politics, family life, travel. Julia's writing is (to me) surprisingly poetic in some instances, like her description of life in Norway:

"Every two or three days we have about 3 inches of snow, and a mist and snow clings to the trees so that every prickle and knobble is outlined in white. We can put on our skis and start right out from the front door....Little babies of 4 dressed in blue and red on tiny skis plow down the hills with happy ruddy faces. Little boys of 7 or 8 are learning how to jump." (Julia to Avis, 2/22/1960).

Once they began exchanging letters with some frequency, it's easy to see the women grow more comfortable with one another, exchanging thoughts about a variety of things. It's fascinating to read the effect modern technology had on cooking and entertaining. Avis and Julia exchanged thoughts about dishwashers, blenders, the pros and cons of frozen poultry and canned soups, and the modern marvel of Avis's "pig"- the garbage disposal she had installed! Pretty sure I've never heard it called a "pig". Both women had strong opinions about some of these modern advances and weren't afraid to share them.

That there will be plenty of food talk is obviously a safe assumption to make. I often wished I had a copy of Mastering the Art of French Cooking sitting right next to me so I could follow along as they talked food and tweaked recipes together. I'd be lying if I said my mouth didn't water more than a few times! Julia describes food and the art and science of cooking in a way that I knew how passionately she felt about it. And the research she did! Oh, the research! The amount of testing, retesting, and refining Julia did is impressive! I can see why this project took years to complete.

With her connections and knowledge of the publishing world, Avis DeVoto played a huge role in eventually getting Mastering the Art of French Cooking published. But she also acted as an unofficial recipe tester, copy editor, sounding board, and shoulder to cry on:
"...most Americans don't know anything at all, NOTHING, about the techniques of good cooking and that every detail (EVERY ONE) must be thoroughly explained. So I am deeply depressed, gnawed by doubts, and feel that all our work may just lay a big rotten egg." (Julia to Avis, 1/12/58).

"We must somehow convince the reading and eating and cooking public that there is nothing psychologically horrifying about this presentation, quite the contrary. What you are doing is casting a great light over the mysteries of French cooking. Stand by your guns, my lamb." (Avis to Julia, 1/17/58).

What a roller coaster this process must have been! I already knew the ending- obviously Julia Child becomes an icon, her masterpiece is published- and there were times it was heart breaking to go through the process with these two women. The letters convey how invested they both were. The joy when they find out the book will be published is wonderful and I felt like I was part of their celebration.

Overall, the book was a great read. I think it had something for everyone- the foodie, the history buff, the travel lover. For me, it was heartwarming to see this deep friendship develop over time, during a much simpler time- a time without email, text messages, social media. It's a good example of how two very busy, very capable, intelligent, and interesting women can devote time and energy to build a strong meaningful relationship. I bet more than a few of us could learn from this example today.

I will say the book was lengthy and at times I was glad to set it aside for a while, but I always came back to it. I think if you're someone who doesn't know a lot about the political events happening at the time, or aren't at all interested in them, you may find those sections are the ones that lag for you, at least, those were sometimes the ones that did for me. But overall, the book was well worth the read!
