Excellent start to potentially brilliant series!
By Sandra Richardson
INITIAL THOUGHTS
I'm looking forward to reading this one as I have looked at the book one of the series so reading this prequel novella will be a good way to try the series without commiting to a full length book straight away.

MY REVIEW
I received this e-book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review. The cover has the striking image of the female on it. I'd say it is an image of Katherine with her eyes downcast as they are meant to be in her society where women are a possession to be owned by men. The colours of the book give the feeling and impression of the oppression that the women in this society feel.
Would I pick up the book in a book store? Yes I think the cover is striking enough to attract my attention on a full book shelf.
So Katherine lives in a world where women are bought and sold as possessions to be owned by men. The more "magic" you have in your blood the more a Warlock will pay for you. Katherine has to attend a school where girls/women are taught to be meek and mild and obedient to prepare them for their owner. Prospective owners are invited into the school to sit with and observe the females to help them choose who they wish to purchase. At age 16 the females blood is tested to confirm how much magic she contains.
Katherine isn't so mild and obedient as she has been taught defiance by her own mother. So much so when she is sold her mother helps Katherine drug her new owner with a sleeping potion and escape. The other people who exist in this story are The Tarnished. The Tarnished are considered the lowest of the low, thought of less worth than even a shadow. You become a Tarnished if you are too rebellious, or have committed a crime or cannot bear your owner children with a suitable amount of magic in them.
Katherine attempts to escape turning to the Tarnished for help. It is then that she meet Mary and Charles. Charles has been Tarnished since birth so knows no other way of life. Can the Tarnished help Katherine escape?
Katherine has lots of large and difficult decisions to make before she feels content in her life as a woman. Katherine wants to be bold, outspoken and to be able to look people in the eye when she speaks to them.
I really fell in love with this novella and was sad when it came to an ending. I feel like I definitely want to read the next book as now I have the background of the story basis as well as knowing some characters that I hope will feature more in the series as it continues.
So did I enjoy the book? I loved it! Would I recommend the book? Definitely yes. Would I read another book in this series? I certainly intend to as soon as I have the time and can get my hands on a copy! Would I read other books by the author Janeal Falor? Yes, I loved the writing style, pace and just the whole book and concept of the book. It is the first Janeal Falor book I have read but it certainly will not be the last.

A Prequel to "You Are Mine" That Won't Disappoint
By J. Madero

eARC Provided by Publisher via Netgalley

Mine to Tarnish, as is the sequel and first book in the Mine series You Are Mine, have that power to make you think a lot about how women were treated in the past and how they are now. The only thing here that's different from our world is the magic aspect. Chardonia is a world where both men and women are born with magic in their blood. Since little, men are trained as warlocks while the women are taught their place as submissive and nothing more than the property of men, their only value being the magic in their blood. Young Katherine has a rebel spirit underneath the whole compliant demeanor society endeavors in her. And when she is sold to an old, stinky, abusive warlock, she will do anything to escape that horrible fate that awaits her. As she rushes to safety for her life and of others who help her, she realizes that life doesn't always have to be the way they tell you to be, and that you have to fight for what you truly believe is right.

I love how Janeal Falor makes the heroines in her stories. They seem shy, quiet, weak even at first. But as the story goes we see as how they slowly get out of the cave and rebel to what society has put over them and the treatment they receive by everyone. I like how the whole plot gives a message of how both women and men are equals, none being greater than the other for whatever reasons. And it is so disgusting and shameful how they are treated here, I actually felt like I was trapped and was finally free like Katherine did.

In the book You Are Mine we first saw her (a supporting character), as a tarnished seamstress, supposed to be even more worthless than a woman and a shadow. Kind hearted and spirited, with this novella we get to know her better and know what her true story is and how she came to be. She was a fighter since the beginning with small defies that got her grounded or hexed by her father. But she didn't put up more of that once they all crossed the line beyond of what they had already in the past. She fought for her freedom against all odds. Plus, she wasn't sidetracked by love! Okay, she does meet someone, which I think was mentioned in You Are Mine, but that is a secondary plot. Oh Charles... Charles, a guy trully worth swooning over. Dang, I always have to fall for the main guy in these stories, don't I?

Anyways, a mix of action, adventure, magic, love, it's a perfect combination that's not going to disappoint the fans of the Mine series. Now I'm even more anxious and desperate to read the sequel, Mine to Spell. Great books by a talented debut indie author.

~Christina's Book Blog~ Wonderful Novella! Wish there were more!!
By CRod316
After reading You Are Mine I could not wait until the next book in the series. In “You are Mine”, I thought that Katherine was a wonderful person and had hoped to read her story about her life before she became a Tarnish. So when I found out “Mine to Tarnish” was her novella I was anxiously awaiting for it. When I got this baby in my email I quickly finished my book as the moment to start it. And just like the first book I was not disappointed!

Like Serena, Katherine is expected to be owned by a master and to do as the Women’s Canon says. She has always known that one day she would be bought by a Warlock, if her blood was good. So when the time arrives, even though she hates everything about her society and rebels against it whenever she can, she is prepared to be taken away from her home. What she doesn’t expect is for her new master to be cruel and disgusting. So with the help of her mother Katherine makes the ultimate decision. She goes on the run.

Katherine is sent to the safest place her mother knows, the Tarnish community. And after Charles, a male Tarnish, saves her he takes her into hiding with the others. But Elton, her new master, does not give up easily. When he comes looking for Katherine they all must go on the run, separately. While Charles and Katherine make their way to their new hiding spot, both fight for their life. In the end Katherine is set free, but at a high cost.

And of course there is a romance in this book. Charles was a wonderful character and I loved his need to protect Kat at all cost. Following Katherine along as she discovers that all males aren’t the same and that Charles cares for her was wonderful. Like the first, there wasn’t a full out declaration of love, which I expected, but it was still just as great to read.

My one wish is that this book would have been longer. Kat and Charles’s story was so great to read that I wish it would have continued beyond the end. I cannot wait to read the next book and to hopefully get a glimpse into the lives of the characters we’ve been introduced to so far.

(You are Mine does not have to be read before this one. You should read it as well though!)

Happy Reading!!

Alexander Alekhine's Best Games: Algebraic edition (Batsford Chess), by Alexander Alekhine, Garry Kasparov

Alekhine's games and writings inspired me from an early age...I fell inlove with the rich complexity of his ideas at the chessboard... I hope readers of this book will feel similarly inspired by Alekhine's masterpieces. From the foreword by Garry Kasparov Alexahnder Alekhine captivated the chess world with his dazzling combatitive play. His genius has been a strong influence on every great player since, none more so than Garry Kasparov. This book contains a selection of the very best of Alekhine's annotation of his own games, converted to algebraic by John Nunn. These games span his career from the early encounters with Lasker, Tarrasch and Rubenstein, through his world title battles, to his meetings with the new generation of players who were to dominate chess in the 1950s.

Best chess book ever?
By Amazon Customer
I really can't say enough about this book. It's the most instructive chess book I've ever read, probably the most entertaining book of any kind that I've ever read.

As far as chess instruction, they say chess is 99% tactics, and Alekhine's games are absolutely full of them. Alekhine's spectacular combinations are legendary of course, and pretty much every game in this book has one (120 complete annotated games in total). In many of the games in this book, he could have won the game pretty much any way he wanted, but ended up passing up a routine endgame over some crazy mating attack instead. The games are full of smaller tactics in the opening, middle, and endgames as well -- just because he won the opponents Queen for a Rook and Bishop doesn't mean the game is over, and his opponents frequently tried to swindle the game. Alekhine shows you exactly how he repelled the attacks. The variations he gives in annotations are pretty much perfect for the club player -- enough variations to explain what is going on, but not too much to smother the reader, or leave too little as an exercise. John Nunn is there with his trusty computer to catch any mistakes Alekhine made. You won't play like Alekhine just from reading his games -- he clearly had an amazing natural talent and passion for the game -- but analyzing the games and playing through all the variations will help anyone's game considerably.

Spielmann said that he could see Alekhine's combinations as well as him, but couldn't get his positions. Alekhine was a positional master as well, and in this book you get to see exactly how he sets up his combinations. Basically, it seemed like, if allowed, he would fix the center with a space advantage, and then slowly turn the screws on his opponent, tying him into knots trying to defend all of the threats, while he carefully set up his own pieces for the coup de grace. Otherwise, he might try to distract his opponent into diverting pieces to the queenside while retaining the option of suddenly transferring his own pieces towards a kingside attack, "like a storm from a clear sky" as Kasparov put it.

A typical game starts with starts with some comments on the opening and why he or his opponent may have chosen the variation. Alekhine explains he played the Dutch in one game because he needed a win; in another, his opponent was avoiding a line Alekhine had just scored a brilliancy against, for example. He typically gives a score or fragment of a relevant game that had just recently been played in that line, which may have influenced the current game, or maybe just was another exciting Alekhine miniature. A long stretch of this book is from the 1920's, when the Orthodox Queen's Gambit Declined, and to a lesser extent the Queen's Indian, was all the rage. I don't play these lines with either color, so that could have been distracting. However I actually thought that helped me understand Alekhine's strategy immensely to see him play those positions repeatedly with either color. By the time you reach the Capablanca match (around game 50 out of 120), you'll be an Orthodox QGD expert as well.

In his early games in the books, which were typically blowouts, he's happy to give a few explanations and variations every few moves. As the games become slower and more strategic, the annotations become increasingly more rich and detailed. Sometimes an entire page is devoted to discussing what the plan of Alekhine or his opponent. One thing that became obvious to me in reading these notes was that Alekhine loved this game, and really this book was his life's work. He put a tremendous amount of work and love into it.

For pure chess entertainment goes, it's a toss up for me between Alekhine and Tal. Your mileage will vary depending on your own style of course. And for entertainment in general, some people like their mystery novels and the tickle in their brain they get when finding out the butler did it. For me, I love the tickle I get seeing Alekhine, with all his pieces being attacked, and thinking "Not only do I not see the mate, I'm not even sure how Alekhine can DRAW here!" ... only to find out next page that, yes, all his pieces are attacked, but in fact if his opponent takes any one of them, a forced variation ensues that concluded in all the pieces being exchanged and Alekhine's h-pawn queening ("The point!!").

This book used to sell for hundreds of dollars used. The Kindle edition is atrocious, with at least one error a game ("1. Rf3"), but for the few bucks I paid for it, is still a complete steal.

Can't recommend enough.

Kindle Edition Unreadable Chess Notation - Do Not Waste Your Time!
By Brad Ashlock
So disappointed! I am only referring to the Kindle edition. The chess notation is a mess. It's not formatted at all correctly. I can't believe they released this! Terrible, unreadable. Note: I am not referring at all to the content, or Alekhine's beautiful games: only the formatting which makes following the games very difficult. I had to return this book for a full refund.

A superb book on one of the game's greatest players
By Keith Halonen
As always, timely delivery much appreciated, not that I actually read chess books as fast as I can purchase them! This book is possibly the best of the modern books on Alekhine's chess. All games in algebraic notation with some expanded analysis of certain games thanks to the decades of knowledge that have emerged since Alekhine played them. These are the best of the games from the trilogy that comprises his tournament career. John Nunn's efforts on these intrinsically profound games add much to Alekhine's already-depthful analysis.

A Sand County Almanac: And Sketches Here and There (Outdoor Essays & Reflections), by Aldo Leopold

This special edition of the highly acclaimed A Sand County Almanac commemorates the one-hundredth anniversary of the birth of Aldo Leopold, one of the foremost conservationists of our century. First published in 1949 and praised in The New York Times Book Review as "full of beauty and vigor and bite," A Sand County Almanac combines some of the finest nature writing since Thoreau with an outspoken and highly ethical regard for America's relationship to the land.

The volume includes a section on the monthly changes of the Wisconsin countryside; another section that gathers together the informal pieces written by Leopold over a forty-year period as he traveled around the woodlands of Wisconsin, Iowa, Arizona, Sonora, Oregon, Manitoba, and elsewhere; and a final section in which Leopold addresses more formally the philosophical issues involved in wildlife conservation. As the forerunner of such important books as Annie Dillard's Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, Edward Abbey's Desert Solitaire, and Robert Finch's The Primal Place, this classic work remains as relevant today as it was forty years ago.

Amazon.com Review
Published in 1949, shortly after the author's death, A Sand County Almanac is a classic of nature writing, widely cited as one of the most influential nature books ever published. Writing from the vantage of his summer shack along the banks of the Wisconsin River, Leopold mixes essay, polemic, and memoir in his book's pages. In one famous episode, he writes of killing a female wolf early in his career as a forest ranger, coming upon his victim just as she was dying, "in time to watch a fierce green fire dying in her eyes.... I was young then, and full of trigger-itch; I thought that because fewer wolves meant more deer, no wolves would mean hunters' paradise. But after seeing the green fire die, I sensed that neither the wolf nor the mountain agreed with such a view." Leopold's road-to-Damascus change of view would find its fruit some years later in his so-called land ethic, in which he held that nothing that disturbs the balance of nature is right. Much of Almanac elaborates on this basic premise, as well as on Leopold's view that it is something of a human duty to preserve as much wild land as possible, as a kind of bank for the biological future of all species. Beautifully written, quiet, and elegant, Leopold's book deserves continued study and discussion today. --Gregory McNamee

From Publishers Weekly
These original essays on the natural environment by renowned conservationist Leopold (1887-1948) were first published posthumously in 1949. In this edition, more than 80 lush photographs shot by nature photographer Sewell on Leopold's former Wisconsin farm accompany the text. Following the seasons, Leopold, whose seminal work in the U.S. Forest Service and in books and magazines helped shape the conservation movement in this country, shared his perceptive and carefully observed portraits of nature month by month. In April, he watched the "sky dance" of the woodcock, who flew upward in a series of spirals. As he hunted partridges in October, his way was lit by "red lanterns," the blackberry leaves that shone in the sun. A November rumination details how the products of tree diseases provide wooded shelters for woodpeckers, hives for wild bees and food for chickadees. Included also is an appreciative essay on wild marshland and several pieces stressing the importance of protecting the natural environment. Leopold sadly observed, "there is yet no ethic dealing with man's relation to land and to the animals and plants which grow upon it." His hope that society would develop an "ecological conscience" by placing what should be preserved above what is economically expedient remains relevant today. These evocative essays about the farm Leopold loved will again be enjoyed by nature lovers and preservationists alike. Though the book has been continuously in print, this beautiful illustrated edition, with its introduction by nature writer Brower (The Starship and the Canoe) will attract fans and newcomers and will make a great gift book this holiday season.

Review
"By a born naturalist, true sportsman and able writer. Delightful essays....[Leopold] develops a fine concept of conservation, not economic, but basically ethical, urging the need for an ecological conscience. Recommended."--Library Journal

"Outdoor prose writing at its best....A trenchant book, full of beauty and vigor and bite."--The New York Times Book Review

"We have Sand County Almanac to demonstrate just how exceptional Leopold was in his highly informed passion for land. [This] handsome new commemorative edition will be welcomed by afficionados whose paperback copies have gone the way of paper acid. It contains the fine original drawings of Charles W. Schartz, and is highly recommended to anyone who might care to glimpse the plateau forests of Arizona in 1909, the green lagoons of the Colorado Delta in 1922, or the guacamaja parrot flocks of Chihuahua in 1936 through the eyes of a man who was there in body and spirit."--The New York Times Book Review

"To read this book is not only to acquire much useful information, but to develop a keener eye and a sharper ear for the world of nature and a greater respect for the land."--The Christian Science Monitor

"We can place this book on the shelf that holds the writings of Thoreau and John Muir."--San Francisco Chronicle

"We may count ourselves lucky to have this final testament of a man who was not only an expert in forestry, ecology, and game management, but an exceptionally sensitive and subtle appreciator and communicator."--Commonweal

"One of the most beautiful, heart-warming and important nature books to appear in years."--The Chicago Tribune

"There is a rudeness and vigor to Leopold's writing that goes directly to the heart of the subject and to the heart of the reader. His Almanac is one of the seminal works of the environmental movement and much admired....As important a book today as when it was first published in 1949."--The Boston Globe

"There will be many for whom this special edition, commemorating the one-hundredth anniversary of the birth of Aldo Leopold, will be their first and long overdue encounter with the Sand County Almanac. For many it will undoubtedly be a joyful encounter, not least because it is so well written and because of the way in which the personality of Leopold engages so directly with the reader as he traces the monthly changes in the Wisconsin countryside."--The Times (London)

"A Sand County Almanac seems unassuming, a collection of poetic vignettes about run-down farmland and wilderness trips seasoned with erudite historical reflections. Yet it has sold over a million copies, and it has added a significant ethical concept to the prophecies of Thoreau, John Muir and other voices in the wilderness...Oxford University Press's handsome new commemorative edition will be welcomed by afficionados..."--The New York Times Book Review

If I could carry only one book with me for the rest of my life ...
By Steven Franklin Martin
I was first introduced to this book about 40 years ago, as a sophomore taking a seminar in the Marine Biology undergrad program at UNC-Wilmington. Up until reading that book, I had been somewhat less-than-motivated by typical college books and courses. But soon after opening the first pages, I knew I had stumbled upon something special. This was my first peak into the window of a qualitative approach to the sciences, ecology, the philosophy of science, and then philosophy proper.

I later spent a few summers fighting mountain fires in Arizona, and then I went on to become a college professor myself, spending over 30 years in Japan teaching everything from biology labs, freshman writing, and public speaking at Temple University Japan, and then an even wider variety of courses in my tenure at Jissen Women's College.

Half a life time later, and half a world away in this digital maze of Tokyo, this is still the book that brings me back to those once clear, star filled skies, the distant splash of a black bass, and a morning cup of coffee around the campfire. This is the book that reminds me — an earth lives beneath my feet, and inspires poetry in anyone who takes the time to slide back into the slippers and boots of Aldo Leopold ... a stylist and thinker for the ages, and a voice that reminds us of not only the importance of a quality life, but also the threats to our sustainability as a species.

I am writing this review only now because I treasure this book so much, I have bought several copies for friends in Japan and China. We are not so different as the media and marketing experts would have us believe.

Enduring Conservation Classic
By The Garden Interior
I just finished reading this conservation classic and I have to confess, I approached it with some trepidation. Knowing it is a beloved and enshrined text of environmentalists, from moderate to fanatical, I feared it might be more polemical than inspiring, more Al Gore than Henry David Thoreau, but was happy to find this fear misplaced. The text was left to the world in draft from when the author died tragically in 1948, helping a neighbor fight a wildfire. It was first published by his son in 1949, and in this reorganized edition in 1966.

First, some information about Leopold himself. He was born in Iowa in 1887 and was educated at Yale before joining the Forest Service in 1909, serving in New Mexico and Arizona. He became one of the founders of the Wilderness Society and in 1924 formed the first wilderness in the Forest Service, the Gila National Forest. Then followed a long tenure as a professor at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He writes with the brilliance of a science professor, the passion and soulfulness of a sentimental farm boy, and the messianic zeal of a visionary reformer who sees more deeply into things than most people can.

This book is actually four slim books “welded together”, as the author says. The first part is the month-by-month almanac that that gives this present form of the book its title. The author takes the reader on a dazzlingly observed personal tour of his life and farm in Sand County, Wisconsin and we willingly accompany him on this warm and insightful narrative journey. Here, for example, is a sample of a couple throw-away lines from October: “Lunch over, I regard a phalanx of young tamaracks, their golden lances thrusting skyward. Under each the needles of yesterday fall to earth building a blanket of smoky gold; at the tip of each the bud of tomorrow, preformed, poised, awaits another spring.” He writes feelingly about the death of the last carrier pigeon, the last jaguar in Baja, the last grizzly to be killed in Arizona, his regret to kill a mother wolf and watch as the green light died out in her eyes; each death and each extinction diminishes us profoundly, for we are integrated into a world that we are ourselves diminishing.

The second part of the book “The Quality of Landscape,” is a series of essays about places. The most hauntingly beautiful is “Chihuahua and Sonora,” an amazing report of his canoe voyage with his brother among the channels and lagoons of the Colorado River’s delta in Baja in 1922. Then it was a fabulously rich environment, teeming with wildlife and abundant flora. Now, of course, the great river has been dammed, managed, and consumed by the thirsty and growing populations of the southwest, so much so that the river never even reaches the Gulf of Baja now and all that fabulous world of flora and fauna has vanished. Leopold: “Man always kills the thing he loves, and so we the pioneers have killed our wilderness. Some say we had to. Be that as it may, I am glad I shall never be young without wild country to be young in. Of what avail are forty freedoms without a blank spot on the map?” And here is another pellucid throw-away line in the essay “Manitoba”, about swans observed in a marsh: “A flotilla of swans rides the bay in quiet dignity, bemoaning the evanescence of swanly things.” We may all bemoan the evanescence of swanly things.

The third part of the book is called “A Taste for Country” and it comprises a series of essays that are about things and ideas, rather than about places. In it, Leopold declares himself a conservationist. The difference between a conservationist and a preservationist is that the latter emphasizes excluding man from wild places, while a conservationist aims to make wise use of all natural resources, a range of uses that includes wilderness as one important value among many others. Indeed, the very word comes from the Latin verb conservare, which means “to make wise use of.” Here is Leopold: “Conservation is a state of harmony between men and land. By land is meant all of the things on, over, or in the earth. Harmony with land is like harmony with a friend; you cannot cherish his right hand and chop off his left. That is to say, you cannot love game and hate predators; you cannot conserve the waters and waste the ranges; you cannot build the forest and mine the farm. The land is one organism. Its parts, like our own parts, compete with each other and co-operate with each other.” And then later he adds: “What conservation education must build is an ethical understanding for land economics and a universal curiosity to understand the land mechanism. Conservation may then follow.”

The final part of the book is a section called “The Upshot,” which is Leopold’s attempt to propose an action agenda that is under-pinned with ethics. It reads a bit dated now, having been formulated in the aftermath of the Dust Bowl of the 1930s and at the dawn of the conservation era when advocates hardly even had a vocabulary for the new school of policy they were trying to form. And yet in some ways it is still fresh and interesting. Here is Leopold in an essay called “The Land Ethic,” writing about how disputes about conservation always cleave the disputants into two groups: “In all of these cleavages, we see repeated the same basic paradoxes: man the conqueror versus man the biotic citizen; science the sharpener of his sword versus science the searchlight on his universe; land the slave and servant versus land the collective organism.”

Here is a great idea for the curious and open-minded student. Go read Thoreau’s masterpiece Walden (1854); then read Rowland’s Cache Lake Country: Life in the North Woods (1947); finally read Leopold’s A Sand County Almanac. It will be a wonderful voyage of discovery and a first class education in the transcendental ethics of wild America.

Missing Round River
By Rukaya
The Kindle edition is missing many chapters found in the MM paperback edition (Part III, A Taste For Country is almost entirely missing, and Part IV is combined with a small portion of what part III is in this edition). Since this is a text for class, and a good read besides, I am quite disappointed. Aldo Leopold and the book itself would get a 5 star rating. This edition however, leaves much to be desired.

Used Andy Crowe and passed on the first try
By Michael J. Schweiger
Here's what I did:
- Studied carefully the Andy Crowe glossary. It is more comprehensive than the PMBOK.
- Read very slowly and carefully the entire PMBOK.
- Read slowly and carefully the entire Andy Crowe. (I purchased the book in March 2014 and it was the 4th printing of the 5th edition. Probably a total of two or three editorial errors vs early printings noted by early fifth edition reviewers.) I memorized the Knowledge Area vs Process Group Matrix, aka the 47 processes (p 46 of Crowe) and the formulas on p 226 of Crowe.
- I did every practice exercise in Crowe. I also did most of the practice exercises in "PMP Exam Prep by Christopher Scordo". In all, I did a little over 1100 practice questions (Crowe and Scordo).
- The evening before the exam is re-studied, very carefully, the entire Andy Crowe glossary.
I did my preparation over a period of about three weeks.

What I liked about Crowe was his explanations that are simply not in the PMBOK. The rational and explanations of the linkages are a key to understanding. Rote memorization (expect for page 46 and page 226) are not enough to pass as there are too many subjective decisional questions on the exam (e.g., "what is the best option for the project manager to . . ." or "which is the next step the project manager shoudl take?" ) Additionally, Crowe's practiced exams have a better explanation than Scordo. Scordo simply has a lot more practice questions.

Crowe's tips about the exam and how to take the exam were every much spot on. He only missed one point: Because the computers in the computer based testing room generate a lot of heat, the room is kept very cool. Sitting in that cooled room for about 4 hours and 20 minutes (total time of the test introduction and the test) became a test of human endurance. I was so cold I was shivering. Glad I wore a thick, long sleeved shirt.

Over a half million PMPs can attest that the PMP exam is not impossible to pass. You must have both the knowledge and understanding to pass this test. You can't succeed solely on testing skills. You can fail, however, if you are not testing savvy. Crowe provided a source to gain that knowledge, understanding, and testing skills.

Wait until the next re-print!
By TBarros84
I previously used the 3rd Edition of Andy Crowe's PMP and CAPM study guides, and loved them! I'm currently a CAPM studying for my PMP, and pre-ordered this book since I liked the way the information was presented to me in the prior editions.

The problem I'm having so far (I'm currently on Chapter 7, Cost Management), is that it feels like a quickly put together cut & paste job from the previous editions. The 5th edition of the PMBOK renamed, removed and added some process. I've found a couple of places with references to a process that no longer exists in the 5th edition. These are just some examples I was able to go back and find again:
- Page 228: The chart with the 13 key earned value management formulas has incorrect formulas. Specifically, the value for Cost Variance is listed as CV=EV/AC. The right formula is CV=EV-AC as listed on page 230 and the 3rd Edition of the Andy Crowe PMP book. Schedule Variance, Estimate to Completion and Variance at Completion formulas are also wrong.
- Page 111: The last sentence of the output for Work Performance Information ends with "...are used in the communications process, Report Performance." In the 5th Edition, this process no longer exist. I am not sure what it was called in the 4th Edition, but in the 3rd Edition it was called Performance Reporting, and it was a Monitoring and Controlling process of Communication Management.
- Page 106: There are several references to the process "Perform Quality Control" which in the 5th Edition has been renamed to "Control Quality." That's not such a huge difference, but i'm already trying to memorize 47 processes, and don't want to get stuck asking, what's the correct name of that process?
- Page 89: The 3rd to last paragraph on this page (under Requirements Management Plan) ends in "...and not the requirements themselves.ww" with two W's at the end of the sentence.
- Page 84: The answer to question 24 is not listed at the beginning in bold like the rest of the answers. You have to read the explanation to get it.
- Page 45-46: The last 3 paragraphs are the same paragraphs from page 44. (again, minor, but sloppy)
- Page 24: "RIsk" is misspelled in the graph. (minor issue, that shouldn't impact your studies, but sloppy.)

What I LOVED about Andy Crowe's book was that it had key information that was not on the PMBOK, but was on the exam. Now, I don't know if the reason I'm not seeing that info is because the PMBOK doesn't have it, or because it's a copy and paste from the older edition that no longer applies to the new edition. For instance, there was a question about Heuristics at the end of the Time Management chapter. The only reference I found to this was a mention in the Summary of Key Terms on page 181. I'm just not confident with the book and find myself doubting it at times.

Helpful but I won't Recommend
By Supergan
First of all, I used this book instead of the PMBOK 5th ed. to prepare for the exam and I passed it on August 6th. But that doesn't mean I like this book. Overall, the book helped me to pass the exam but I would not recommend it to you.

Although the book does cover the 5th ed. and was helpful to prepare for the exam, there are several things I don't like about it.
1) Many concepts and key terminologies are missing in this book. This becomes apparent when I took the exam and noticed that I've never seen quite a few of the terms that are questioned. So for those of you who are thinking to buy a prep book to replace the PMBOK, this book is not right for you.
2) The book is apparently not well edited before publishing. For example, in the answer section for practice questions under chapter 10, the keys for the last 15 questions are missing.
3) The final practice exam is way too easy compared to the real one so you can't depend on it to judge your readiness. I finished the final practice exam in less than 2 hours and I got 90% correct but in the real exam it took me over 3 and a half hour and I got only one domain "Proficient" and the rest "Moderately Proficient".
