Seven white men, armed with knives and shotguns, ordered the young woman into their green Chevrolet, raped her, and left her for dead. The president of the local NAACP branch office sent his best investigator and organizer to Abbeville. Her name was Rosa Parks. In taking on this case, Parks launched a movement that ultimately changed the world.

The author gives us the never-before-told history of how the civil rights movement began; how it was in part started in protest against the ritualistic rape of black women by white men who used economic intimidation, sexual violence, and terror to derail the freedom movement; and how those forces persisted unpunished throughout the Jim Crow era when white men assaulted black women to enforce rules of racial and economic hierarchy. Black women’s protests against sexual assault and interracial rape fueled civil rights campaigns throughout the South that began during World War II and went through to the Black Power movement. The Montgomery bus boycott was the baptism, not the birth, of that struggle.

At the Dark End of the Street describes the decades of degradation black women on the Montgomery city buses endured on their way to cook and clean for their white bosses. It reveals how Rosa Parks, by 1955 one of the most radical activists in Alabama, had had enough. “There had to be a stopping place,” she said, “and this seemed to be the place for me to stop being pushed around.” Parks refused to move from her seat on the bus, was arrested, and, with fierce activist Jo Ann Robinson, organized a one-day bus boycott.

The protest, intended to last twenty-four hours, became a yearlong struggle for dignity and justice. It broke the back of the Montgomery city bus lines and bankrupted the company.

We see how and why Rosa Parks, instead of becoming a leader of the movement she helped to start, was turned into a symbol of virtuous black womanhood, sainted and celebrated for her quiet dignity, prim demeanor, and middle-class propriety—her radicalism all but erased. And we see as well how thousands of black women whose courage and fortitude helped to transform America were reduced to the footnotes of history.

Danielle L. McGuire’s At the Dark End of the Street provides an excellent examination of the Civil Rights Movement and the history of sexual assault against black women. Assistant Professor of History at Wayne State University, McGuire analyzes the ritualization of sexual assault and its use as a weapon to maintain white superiority. McGuire has successfully written a compelling and thought-provoking work that truly adds another dimension to the study of the Civil Rights Movement.
McGuire brilliantly opens the book with the story of Recy Taylor, effectively grabbing the attention of the reader and setting the tone for the remainder of the work. By beginning the narrative with such a horrific event, McGuire drives home the reality of life for African American women during the Jim Crow era. As scaring and horrific as sexual assault truly is, during this time period it was effectively weaponized. It became a weapon of the white male patriarchy to use in its war against the black population. This was a way to maintain white superiority and break the spirit of African American women. It was a weapon of fear, which was terrible, yet effective.
In At the Dark End of the Street, McGuire discusses how African American women physically defended themselves against their attackers. Those who killed their attackers were often charged with murder even though they were acting in self-defense. It was important for the NAACP and other organizations to play an active role in the advocacy of these victims. One such advocate/investigator was Rosa Parks, a woman who is generally only thought of as an elderly woman who refused to give up her seat on the bus. As McGuire shows, she was much more than that.
At the Dark End of the Street is an excellent work that examines a tremendously understudied aspect of the Civil Rights Movement. McGuire has crafted a compelling narrative that engrosses the reader and shines light upon a truly dark time. This book is an invaluable addition to the existing historiography and forces the reader to rethink what they know about the Civil Rights Movement.

This REALLY needs to be made into a movie.

Seriously. Out of all of the history books that i read in high school and in the libraries, this was the only one that actually CLICKED for me. The rampant rape of black women throughout slavery and the Jim Crow Era has always been ignored or quickly dismissed in historical books before but this great author made sure to NOT do that! I love her for that! This book needs to be made into a movie one day! This will be the first time where our stories will be told thoroughly.

I watched The Help, and it failed to mention the sexual assaults and rapes that the black women suffered. Although i enjoyed the movie somewhat, i was still disappointed because they refused to let our REAL stories get told. You can't have a good story set in the Jim Crow era without telling the rampant rapes of black women by white men and other men. It's part of our history. Whether many people want to admit it or not!

This Book Will Change Your Life or at Least Your Perspective

This was an excellent book. I read it for a Women's Studies course and am so glad I did. It is a hard read at times due to the subject matter and I got chills over and over with every page I turned. This is a dense read so full of information, facts, and, the best part in my opinion, stories that hit you straight in your emotions (I am not ashamed to admit I got a little teary eyed at times). The Civil Rights Movement in the US is definitely taken for granted and has been whittled down to little bites of history where MLK Jr. is glorified and positioned as the center piece but if you read this book you'll learn there was so so much more to it and that once again history bears its burden on the backs of so many brave black women.

This book makes you think

This book read like a college textbook survey of philosophies on justice, which it is. As a layman I was initially looking for something simpler level and with absolute conclusions on what is right and what is wrong. Instead I got an education on how philosophers have viewed this question over the ages and frankly a slightly unsatisfying conclusion. With a technical background I was looking for a simpler (one plus one equals two) conclusions. Instead with some stark examples- drawn out to an extreme scenario the author challenged my basic beliefs on what is right and what is wrong. Most importantly he left the reader recognizing that in some situations there is no right or wrong as all possible options had shades of gray. While a given society can define an absolute right (or wrong) trying to apply this absolute without the cultural background lends itself to moral traps. But if right can only be defined i terms of the culture you belong does what is right and what is wrong vary as cultures change? Like pornography does the boundaries change with cultural changes? Pictures of ladies ankles may have been pornographic at one time, while statues of naked men or even woman were accepted at other times. Is there a logical code that says one of these was always wrong?

This book makes you think. If you have trouble with the front section focus on the examples , the dilemmas posed, and especially the concepts in the last few chapters. But if you can, try and stay with the author throughout his thought process.

Highly Recommended

This is an immensely readable refresher of the principles pertaining to justice as written by a wide array of philosophers, from Aristotle to Rawls. Ultimately, Mr. Sandel argues convincingly that what the right thing is cannot be separated entirely from the hazards of our genes, education and circumstances and that discussions of moral matters require more than considerations of utility and consent. To Sandel, there is a civic dimension to justice that too few attempt to engage. These are thought provoking ideas brought forth in examinations of some very contentious modern issues from immigration to affirmative action to abortion, you name it.
However, the most beautiful thing about the book for me was the self-reflection it promoted in me as I tried to engage the questions as rigorously as I could. Doing that, in the first instance, is the Right Thing to Do, I think.

The Philosophy of Justice

I came to this book by Professor Sandel from his MOOC, a series of videos on the subject of Justice given as his actual lectures in Harvard. The book follows them closely but is not identical to them. I had not expected it to be based on philosophy, and certainly philosophers are not my favourite reading material, nor do I admire a man who has himself preserved for posterity by taxidermists, but he takes their points of view sequentially building on their arguments and using actual case material from the UK and the USA to provoke thought. Much of the issues remain unresolved and the foundations of the controversies are explored. Is cannibalism under extreme duress legitimate? Can you give permission to be killed and eaten? Is taking one life to save five legitimate? Questions of surrogate motherhood, sale of body parts and other current vexatious issues are explored.
Ultimately he expresses an enthusiasm for Bobby Kennedy which I do not share, but the book and lectures are thought provoking and force on to clear one's own mind

Significantly healing just to read it.

So many of us have grown up in a society where, if abuse is even recognized, it is not considered really damaging unless it is physical or. God forbid, sexual. Not enough emphasis has been placed on how deeply wounding emotional abuse can be on an individual. Sure, the media has sometimes identified cases where severe bullying has wreaked havoc on adolescent development. I cannot think of a book, however, that is more comprehensive on the subject of emotional abuse than Healing the Scars of Emotional Abuse. I first saw the book for sale at an Army post exchange. Thumbing through it I later decided to purchase it through Amazon.com. I am really glad I did. It was most informative.
There are four parts in the book:
Part 1 concentrates on understanding emotional abuse from defining it to explaining why it is so common and informing the reader just how damaging it can be.
Part 2 describes types of emotional abuse identifying emotional abuse through words, actions, neglect and even a chapter entitled "Spiritual Abuse: The Bible as Bludgeon." Finding myself living in the Bible Belt of the United States I was naturally drawn to that chapter. I agreed with the author that religion should CONTRIBUTE to an individual's self esteem. The author admitted however that "unfortunately religious faith HAS been used as an abusive weapon in a relationship." This is perhaps the FIRST book I have ever read that dared to admit this. Indeed in my many years employed as a domestic violence social worker I had seen men feeling justified in emotionally, physically and/or sexually abusing their wives because they did not "submit" to them in the way they felt the Bible was directing them to do. This was so sad. God should be seen as a source of true love and enduring comfort not as a creul and punishing diety.
Part 3 describes the many effects of emotional abuse including the effects on sense of self, physical effects and effects on relationships.
Of course my favorite part was Part 4 describing how to overcome emotional abuse by first recognizing your abuse and its effects, getting over the past and living for the future and restoring your self. It was a great help to me in continuing my personal journey to overcome the effects of emotional abuse I endured as a child.
This is a most important book and I would highly recommend it to anyone who has suffered abuse either in their family of origin, their husband or wife, partner or significant others.

Gave Me Clarity

Having been in therapy for many years, I came to understand the abuse I suffered in childhood but was completely oblivious to until something inside of me started 'eating' at me as am adult. This book, along with the book Sibling Abuse, have put it all into perspective. I was not putting it all together until reading these two books. I feel empowered, understood, validated and am preparing to begin EMDR treatment to finally heal. This book made me understand in full perspective 'what' is 'wrong' with me which in turn provides me with an understanding of what needs to be healed. I know some of the reviewers did not like the incorporation of God/Christianity in the book - whether you believe or not, it is a great book. I personally chose the book because it recognizes God in the healing process. I would highly recommend this book. It gave me great awakening.

Informational Regarding How to Identify Various Types of Mental Abuse-And How to Overcome It

I thought this was a good book. It makes you think about the various people that have come through your life, that use some of the various types of mental abuse on people. Until those people seek help, they will affect everyone in their lives. And that damage can carry on for generations, unless the victims of that abuse seek help. Even if it's reading books like this to understand what they experienced, rise above it, and be better people. I thought it drug on at the end, but it does end by giving ideas on how to heal yourself. I actually bought this for my step-daughter, but being the victim of emotional abuse myself for 17 yrs of marriage, now divorced from him, really helped me as well.

Excellent book for financial planning professionals

This is an excellent book for financial planning professionals. As a registered investment advisor and comprehensive financial planner, I found this book to be invaluable to enhancing my practice. I believe that I have better tools for working with clients and their emotional/psychological issues relating to money. Since we all seem to bring out own special emotional connections to money, it's important for a financial advisor to know how to help clients flesh these out - and when an advisor should bring in a therapist. I am looking forward to reading other books by the Drs. Klontz and Rick Kahler to help me learn how to provide better financial life planning and serve my clients with integrity.

Dante Alighieri was born in Florence in 1265 and belonged to a noble but impoverished family. His life was divided by political duties and poetry, the most of famous of which was inspired by his meeting with Bice Portinari, whom he called Beatrice,including La Vita Nuova and The Divine Comedy. He died in Ravenna in 1321.

Durling avoids the clumsiness that attends a slavishly literal translation and attains fluidity and readability without sacrificing accuracy, and this is no small feat for Dante's poem, especially its final third. There are existing prose translations -- most notably John Sinclair's, originally published over 60 years ago. But Durling's seems to me the most accurate without being less readable. In addition, Sinclair's translation often has an archaic flavor that Durling typically avoids.

A classic that many have missed for various reasons

After giving up on this volume of The Divine Comeday several times in my younger years, I decided to give the work another try. I thought maybe maturity would make it manageable this time. That did help, but the real key to my finishing and benefiting from my experience with Paradise this timewas the inspired translation by Mark Musa. Mr. Musa obviously thought it more important for readers to understand what Dante meant, rather than just providing a word-for-word rendition of the original text, which was after all written in medieval Italian. He also provides plentiful notes and longer explanatory passages. I would recommend this edition to all who are interested in unpacking this monument of medieval literature to stimulate their own thinking about human destiny even in this modern age.

I bought these 3 volumes for a course, which was then postponed indefinitely. But since I'd already started reading, I kept at it. I'd tried reading/studying the Divine Comedy before, without success - too dry. The translator of this version is just excellent, presenting the text in a beautiful flowing, readable English.

Nicolò Wojewoda is a global organizer, committed to leaving a more sustainable world as the legacy of his generation. He is currently a climate change campaigner in the European team of 350.org. He has led and initiated youth projects and organizations over the past nine years in Europe and then globally, building meaningful partnerships with non-profit organizations, business leaders, and policy-makers. Recently, he has coordinated a youth-led coalition of 100 partner organizations towards the UN summit on sustainable development, and organized a global consultation to draft a manifesto on democracy and sustainable development. He lives in London, UK.
