I really liked this product

I really liked this product. I was recommended this book and could not be happier. I used becker but I was in need of different questions to supplement my studies. These questions were different and gave you a different style of thinking of the question.

Good for revision

I used this BEC course. The questions are easier than real exam questions. So expect more difficult questions in the exam. However this is a very good course to review. It covers all the areas and their answers help to revise the theory very efficiently. I highly recommend this for your last week's revision.

Great questions and easy to understand. I used this book to complement the Becker BEC book. The questions were formatted in a similar manner. I highly recommend buying this as additional source material. I plan on purchasing the other 3 books as well.

Great novelization of a superhero story.

This is the best version of the Death and Life of Superman out there. I've tried reading the Graphic Novels and collections from this event, and they're awful. The 90's were not a great era for comic books, and it shows. However, this novelization really grabs the best parts of the story. You get a real feel for the characters and their ordeals. We see Clark/Superman for the hero he is, learn about the pretenders as they emerge, and are captivated by the villains as their plots unfold. I got it as a gift on my 11th birthday and read it a bunch of times. I lost it a long time ago, and when it came up in conversation I had to get another copy. The book is just as good as i remember

Superman Lives!

This was a fantastic read. The story itself held my interest greatly, but the author's work on combining all the different parts of the story, from 4 or 5 different lines of comic books, was excellent. The Death and Life of Superman was first written in the early 90s and spanned across several comic book series, including Action Comics, Superman, and Superman: The Man of Steel. Roger Stern took all of these stories and put them together to form a complete tale that read like a novel from start to finish.

The only disappointing thing about this book, to me, was the use of all the exclamation points. Especially in the dialog. It seemed that every time one of the characters talked to someone, they had to end the sentence in an exclamation point. This bodes well in the comic book world, and I assume that is likely where it originated with this story, but I was hoping for more of an adult story. Don't get the wrong, the story was quite interesting and held my attention, but all-in-all I want a true novel to read instead of a comic book or graphic novel. This is true of all of the comic mass market paperbacks that I will read and review on this blog.

On that subject, I wish that I could find more comic book novels of this sort. For a while, about 5-10 years ago, they were writing these quite frequently, from both the DC and Marvel Universes. Today, however, you can't find anything like this in the local comic book shops or book stores. I can find some used at Half Priced Books, but nothing new in print, not even on Amazon. I'm disappointed in this, but it won't keep me from purchasing and collecting all the DC and Marvel Novels that were written before now, and keeping them in my collection.

I especially liked the `Reign of the Supermen` part to this book. When the story first dropped in the early 90s, I watched the comic book releases and read just a little bit about them. I knew that after the death of Superman, 4 imposters appeared on the scene, claiming to be Superman who had come back. That isn't a correct interpretation of what really happens, and this book tells the tale of Superman's death, the 4 Supermen who came after him, and ultimately Superman's resurrection. Hence why the author titled the book `The Death and Life` in that order.

If you are a Superman fan, I'd recommend this book. I believe it is even out of print now, according to Amazon, but there are plenty of used copies around. I only wish there were continuations to the story that I could purchase and read.

Excellent book

I think everything that needed to be said has been said by Richard. This is an excellent book for those who want to get their hands dirty with Wireless Security. One of the areas in IT that will never die down, not anytime soon at least, is security. IT security is especially HOT right now, and a lot of companies are paying more attention to what they should have years ago. In my home city, Philadelphia, there is a project called Wireless for Philly that is supposed to bring wireless connection to everybody. Now, while people see that as just another development in this great city, I look at it as an opportunity for people who are smart enough to protect this kind of network. This book does the job. I am going to suggest that if you know you are not going to have time to dedicate to this book, don't pick this book up. You're better off! Because if you do pick this book up, it's going to be hard to put it down.

(I bought this book back in 2009 and I am finally reviewing it)
It is a good reference book but not really a must have, considering it was published in 2004, but I guess one can glean some useful information in attacking/defending a wireless network.

I'd recommend downloading Backtrack 5 and using the Aircrack-ng suite if one wants to give it a try at cracking wireless networks. WEP is very easy to crack (I have seen phone numbers being used as the key). It irks me that the authors would recommend hiding the SSID and using MAC filtering because it would be "raising the bar" for a bunch of script kiddies looking for free Internet. Those two are useless and shouldn't be even considered as adding an extra layer of security as both are revealed when a wireless client connects to an access point. WPA2 (with a complex password of course) is good enough to keep out the average Joe freeloader.

From home WI-FI to business applications, there is something for every networking person serious about security in the pages of this book. It's one heck of a great college reference source too ! Makes a fantastic desk reference when you need it.

About the Author

James N. Danziger is a Research Professor of Political Science at the University of California, Irvine, where he also has served as Chair of the Department of Political Science, campus-wide Dean of Undergraduate  Education, and Chair of the Academic Senate. He is recipient of many honors and awards, including a Marshall Scholarship (to Great Britain), a Foreign Area Fellowship, Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, Phi Beta Kappa, and an IBM Faculty Award. He received the first UC Irvine Distinguished Faculty Lectureship Award for Teaching in 1987, the UC Irvine Distinguished Service Award in 1997, and the campus’ highest honor, the Extraordinarius Award in 2009. His Ph.D. is from Stanford University, and he has held visiting appointments at the universities of Aarhus (Denmark), Pittsburgh, and Virginia. His research has received awards from the American Political Science Association and the American Society for Public Administration. He has published extensively, particularly on information technology and politics, and been an active participant in local politics.

 

Charles Anthony Smith received his PhD in political science from the University of California-San Diego (2004) and his JD from the University of Florida (1987). He is an Associate Professor at the University of California-Irvine. His books include The Rise and Fall of War Crimes Trials: from Charles I to Bush II (NY: Cambridge University Press, 2012), and Globalizing Human Rights (NY: Routledge 2014). He has published articles in Law & Society Review, Political Research Quarterly, Justice System Journal, International Political Science Review, Judicature, Journal of Human Rights, Election Law Journal, Studies in Law, Politics & Society, Human Rights Review, Journal of International Relations & Development among other journals and published chapters in edited volumes with Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, and University of Pennsylvania Press, among others. He has served as guest editor for special issues of the Journal of Human Rights and Human Rights Review. His research considers the role of courts, law, and litigation in the contestation over a variety of types of rights. He considers this unifying research theme using a variety of methodologies in the context of the United States, in comparative contexts, and in the realm of international relations and globalization. He has won a variety of awards for both his teaching and research.

About the Author
Patrick Hurley was born in Spokane, Washington in 1942. He received his bachelor's degree in mathematics (with a Physics minor) from Gonzaga University in 1964 and his Ph.D. in philosophy of science with an emphasis in history of philosophy from Saint Louis University in 1973. In 1972 he began teaching at the University of San Diego, where his courses have included logic, philosophy of science, metaphysics, process philosophy, and legal ethics. In 1987 he received his J.D. from the University of San Diego and he is currently a member of the California Bar Association. He retired from teaching in 2008, but continues his research and writing. His interests include music, art, opera, environmental issues, fishing, and skiing.

Nice Introduction to Logic

The Hurley book came within a week, a bit better than expected.

Except for packaging, which left an impression of work performed in a hurry, all went well with the book delivery process. The book I received was new and in good condition when it arrived.

The book is fairly straightforward, easy to read and does not penetrate the subject as deeply as many pedagogical textbooks do, especially those involving concepts of Mathematical Logic. Much of the logical symbolism and symbols, e.g., logical operators, are treated toward the end of the book as a more advanced topic since the first few chapters are dedicated to an introductory treatment of Logic in general, especially for the uninitiated.

All in all - nice book introducing Logic and its concepts to people who are unexposed to the subject, or never studied it formally.

A fine tool for the study of logic and language

This book was recommended to me by a former professor who has extensive background in the teaching of logic of logic and language. Having four other texts dealing with this subject, I often consult different books when searching for differing examples. The C.D. Rom that accompanies the Hurley text is a great source for review and practice, and certainly one of the best parts of owning the book. I only wish other books, dealing with various topics would have C.D. that accompany them.

Many books provoke a visceral reaction, but few really make you itch. Science writer Carl Zimmer's Parasite Rex does just that, provoking a deliciously creepy sense of paranoia in the reader as it explores a long-misunderstood realm of science. While entomologists love to announce that there are more species of insects than all other animals combined, few parasitologists choose to trump that by reminding us that "parasites may outnumber free-living species four to one." That figure is based on the multicellular chauvinism of the 19th century, which excludes bacteria and fungi from consideration (athlete's foot, anyone?), but Zimmer looks at the E. coli in our guts as well as the worms, flukes, mites, and other critters that earn a healthy living at our expense--and the expense of our domesticated plants and animals.

The author traveled to Africa to see firsthand the effects of sleeping sickness and river blindness. One of the year's most fascinating works of popular science is also its most disgusting. From tapeworms to isopods to ichneumon wasps, "parasites are complex, highly adapted creatures that are at the heart of the story of life." Zimmer (At the Water's Edge) devotes his second book to the enormous variety of one- and many-celled organisms that live on and inside other animals and plants. The gruesome trypanosomes that cause sleeping sickness had nearly been routed from Sudan when the country's civil war began: now they're back. Costa Rican researcher Daniel Brooks has discovered dozens of parasites, including flies that lay eggs in deer noses: "snot bots." And those are only the creatures from the prologue. Zimmer discusses how the study of parasites began, with 19th-century discoveries about their odd life cycles. (Many take on several forms in several generations, so that a mother worm may resemble her granddaughter, but not her daughter.) He looks at how parasites pass from host to host, and how they defeat immune systems and vice versa. Many parasites alter their hosts' behavior: Toxoplasma makes infected rats fearless, thus more likely to be eaten by cats, who will then pick up the microbe. Quantifiable "laws of virulence" lead parasites to become nasty enough to spread, yet not so nasty as to wipe out all their hosts. And eons of coevolution can affect both partners: howler monkeys may avoid violent fights because screwworms can render the least scratch fatal. Two final chapters address parasites in human medicine and agriculture. Zimmer, a columnist at National History, has written an absolutely fascinating book about parasitesDonce the reader gets past the "grossness" factor. As with his previous book, At the Water's Edge (LJ 2/1/98), evolution is central: Zimmer considers not only how parasites have evolved but how they may have helped the evolution of other species. Though humans are not the only species discussed, some of the most interesting evolutionary theories come from human-parasite relations. Mild cases of sickle cell anemia, for instance, seem to protect against malaria, implying that these sorts of blood diseases have evolved with the aid of parasites. The author discusses more recent research suggesting that some modern diseases, such as allergies or ulcerative colitis, may actually be triggered by our immune systems' not having parasites to fight. This well-written book makes parasitology interesting and accessible to anyone. Not a textbook (a few good ones are recommended in a selected bibliography), it does have a place in science libraries, even for students who don't realize that their field of study is related to parasitology. Good writing, no illustrations

Though it sounds odd, this book gave me a profound respect for parasites – and an understanding of just how difficult it can be to study them. Indeed, for some young adults, reading this book could be the career-deciding event in their young lives.

So why just three stars? Two reasons.

First, the lack of illustrations. Nature books -- especially of such strange creatures with their multi-stage life cycle – cry out for photos and illustrations. So although the text was very good, with nothing but words to go by, the visual images that the reader unconsciously comes up with could be far off the mark. (I.e., Picture visiting a natural science museum that has signs but no exhibits.)

Second, the book sometimes speculates about the influence that parasites may have had on evolution and animal behavior. Though such speculations make for interesting thought experiments, they are by their very nature unprovable.

I wish my rectum was a cannon

One of the reviews of this book claimed it would change the way you thought about the world. That sounds like hyperbole, but after reading "Parasite Rex," I have to concede it's true. I'm about as lay as laymen come (at least when it comes to hard science), and yet I found myself so spellbound by the descriptions of how various parasites operate, survive, and evolve, that I finally understood the passion of entomologists, which had always seemed so foreign to me.

The author takes the lives of parasitic organisms and makes it into high drama,and sometimes high comedy, as in the case of a bug, that, in order to thwart predators who scent its droppings, has turned its derriere into a high-powered rocket launcher that fires its feces far away in order to throw parasites off its trail.

I've spent enough time in academia (in the soft sciences/humanities) to have my eyes glaze over whenever I hear the word "interdisciplinary," but this book really does deserve the word. Zimmer brings everything to bear in his discussion, from parasites in pop culture/ media (the films of David Cronenberg and Ridley Scott). to ecological philosophy (a variation on the Gaia Hypothesis), arguing credibly that the ecosystem may perceive Homo Sapiens Sapiens as a parasite swimming in its own bloodstream, and that the multiple banes of our existences, like malaria, cancer, and AIDS, are nature's way of trying to rid itself of a persistent parasite repeatedly attacking its host.

I remember a marine biologist once telling me that she wasn't interested in science fiction, because nature always outdid the imagination. This book is proof of that theory. Hats off to Zimmer. Highest Recommendation.

Very interesting and important, if a bit plodding

The book its an excellent review of the parasites among us. It also does not miss any key topics, although some of them it glosses over a bit. For example, the chapeter on how these criters beat our immune system could have been much better and more detailed, particularly as this was for me one of the key quesitons I had as I continued to read. While we are told that basically it is too costly for organisms to proof themselves against even particular parasites, that was never explained in sufficient detail. On the whole, however, it covers the important parasite concepts and the evolutionary twists and turns in the battle between parasites and their hosts, and responsibly differentiates scientific speculation from experimental fact.

Perhaps the biggest flaw in the book is the lack of diagrams and its minimal number of photos. One of the coolest things about parasites is how gross they are and I wanted to see more of them. Also the same parasites seemed to keep coming up as examples of everything. Perhaps there are only so many types of parasites so it just doesn't matter whether one discusses blood flukes of humans or some other animal. But the book makes bold statements about how much more diverse parasites are than so called "free living" organisms, so it seemed a bit weird to continually be presnted with the "usual suspects" as examples of each of the parasitic principles.

The writing is clear and well organized, but goes on too long and is repetitive in places. This would probably have been a better book if were 30 pages shorter. But that's a quibble.

On the whole, a very good book that should interest anyone interested in natural systems and evolution, and parasites in particular.
