About the Author
Naoki Higashida was born in Kimitsu, Japan, in 1992. Diagnosed with severe autism when he was five, he subsequently learned to communicate using a handmade alphabet grid and began to write poems and short stories. At the age of thirteen he wrote The Reason I Jump, which was published in Japan in 2007. Its English translation came out in 2013, and it has now been published in more than thirty languages. Higashida has since published several books in Japan, including children’s and picture books, poems, and essays. The subject of an award-winning Japanese television documentary in 2014, he continues to give presentations throughout the country about his experience of autism.
David Mitchell is the author of seven novels, including Cloud Atlas, The Bone Clocks, and, most recently, Slade House. KA Yoshida was born in Yamaguchi, Japan, and specialized in English poetry at Notre Dame Seishin University. KA Yoshida and David Mitchell live in Ireland with their two children.

"Spoken Language Is A Blue Sea."

Naoki Higashida’s new book, the title of which comes from a Japanese proverb, “fall down 7 times get up 8,” is so difficult to write about. I am a little overwhelmed and in awe of what this young man has accomplished. (Born with severe autism, Mr. Higashida also wrote THE REASON I JUMP, that according to David Mitchell in his thoughtful introduction, has made the author the most widely read translated Japanese author after Haruki Murakami.) This book consists of short essays from Mr. Higashida’s blog, some poetry and even a short story. That he has produced this book (that Mr. Mitchell, who also has a child with autism, and K A Yoshida have translated) says so much good about the endurance of the human spirit. As I understand, he writes by typing out sentences on an alphabet grid or tracing letters of the alphabet in a caregiver’s hand. From that slow and difficult process, we get this beautifully written book from someone who may be nonverbal but is so good with language. From his short story “Journey”: “It was early morning when I woke up. Light bathed my whole body. I felt good, and sang to myself a song I once loved a long time ago.” The narrator sees a “cabbage-white butterfly.” And from the essay “Thoughts on Words,” we get this knock-out first sentence: “Spoken language is a blue sea.”
Mr. Higashida writes about the obstacles involved with being basically nonverbal, the support and love his family, his wishes and dreams. He loved New York when he visited. If he were not a human, he might like to be a cat. Then there is the poignant essay “Mothers Day, 2013.” The author is shopping with a helper and sees red carnations on sale for Mother’s Day. It is so difficult for him to verbalize or express by gestures what he wants to buy. This day, however, he is able to verbalize two words “carnation” and “buy.” He only has coins enough to buy one carnation but he makes his mother glad. “Giving flowers to my mum on Mother’ Day was a dream I’d been harbouring for years. That day one red carnation in a room at home did all my speaking for me.”
Mr. Higashida’s message is clear. His wish, that he expresses again and again, is that he not be isolated but that he be given a chance to live as every human being should live and that he everyone else has a right to achieve happiness, whether he has a disability or not. He expresses himself so fluently in the chapter “An Alphabet Interview” when he answers the question (I): “When life gets unbearable, what should I do?” “Please don’t assume there’s an easy exit. Be still, be calm, and spend today just living, like you did yesterday. . . We human beings have to live each day to its fullest and do our best in whatever circumstances we find ourselves in. There’s no need to feel any shame just because your ‘fullest’ and ‘best’ look different to those of others.” Wonderful words of wisdom.
I cannot imagine the person who would not be moved by this young man’s story.

Beautiful glimpse into the mind and inner life of a young man with autism. Wow.

This book is startling, compassionate, articulate and down-to-earth. It is a collection of short essays by a non-verbal autistic young man who can communicate by touching a board with an alphabet grid. The reader gets an inside view of what it means to have severe autism - and this book unlocks the inner world of a tender-hearted, thoughtful young man whose greatest desire is to be able to speak love and gratitude to his loving parents and the teachers who have helped him. He writes about his school experiences, positive and negative. He writes about the thought processes - his mother says, "it's raining!" and runs to take the laundry off the line. He outlines how he processes this simple event, and wonders how "neurotypcial" people can make such leaps. He is loving, grateful, and a lovely young man who pounds his own head when he is mad at his brain and bites his shirt sleeves when he is upset. He talks about fixations, obsessions, and how he battles them. If you have a relative with autism (I do) it is like a whole new world - if this is the rich inner life of one person society deems severely impaired, what more can we do to unlock the world of countless people with autism? Very thought-provoking, informative, and moving. Highly recommended.

The spectrum from the inside. Frank and moving.

One of my big fears with this book was that it might be the product of "facilitated communication". Mitchell's preface indicates this is totally the work of the author so I'm taking that at face value. I work extensively with my state's autism society and have known many who placed much hope in facilitated communication, only to have their faith discredited and their hearts broken.
Going on the assumption that this is the true work of the author, I found it revelatory and heartening. It shows a keen sense of self awareness that I have not seen reflected in other works by authors on the spectrum. Higashida explains his world view in ways that are easy to grasp. I really enjoyed his insights about New York vs Japan for someone with his disability. He also has a fascinating and very Japanese sense of family. I think that might make his acceptance of his dependence more understandable.
There is not a lot of flow in this book; it is more a series of brief insights and musings on the state of the world as autism collides with the neuro-typical world. I very much enjoyed it and it will have a place in my spectrum literature library.
